'Entourage': Let's discuss the Chase boys' parentage

165558__entourage_lThanks to you sharp-eyed Entourage watchers for raising this question, which was also kind of nagging me: How are Vincent Chase (Adrien Grenier) and Johnny Drama (Kevin Dillon) related? Of course, the short answer is that they’re brothers. But didn’t we learn at some point that they were half-brothers? I mean, after perusing HBO’s official site, I haven’t come up with any evidence of that. And they do have the same last name, which would imply that they had different mothers, if anything. But Drama was awfully familiar (and familial) with guest star Mercedes Ruehl (pictured, with Grenier), who played nervous flier Mrs. Chase. (I also thought Vince had changed his name when he went into acting, but wasn’t Drama an actor first? And, in that case, why would their mother’s surname be Chase? Last night’s season premiere was only 23 minutes long, but it certainly raised enough questions.

I suppose I could call HBO, but what fun would that be? Do you guys have any answers?

I just got done watching Season 2 on DVD and am confused about their heritage. Early in the season, it was implied (I thought) that Vince had some Hispanic in him (or were they just referring to his looks for the role)? Later, Drama is all about his Irish heritage with U2 – a heritage shared with E. Anyone have any clue?

Vince & Johnny are half-brothers. Same Mother, different fathers. Johnny is older, thus born first. Mom’s last name is Chase (same as Vince), as that was her last husband’s surname. Johnny’s last name is “Drama”.

Johnny’s last name isn’t Drama. That’s his nickname. Chase is his last name.

I’m a bit confused as well. If y’all recall the episode where Drama was freaking out about his calves, didn’t Johnny say Vince was lucky that he had “his” (as in an individual distinct from Johnny’s) mom’s calves. That, along with other things I’ve seen in the show (like the insinuation that the brothers thought they were cousins until Vince was 10-15), seem to imply that they were half-brothers with the same dad.
Please get us some answers, Mickey.

It had been set up that they have the same father and different mothers. In the pilot, Turtle says Drama is Vince’s half-brother and Vince thought Drama was his cousin until he was 14. From ep 210– Drama to Vince: “Nah bro, you’re lucky. You got your mom’s calves, I got Dad’s.”

Drama is his nick name jackass! They are full brothers no mistery here

plus, in Sunday’s season 3 premier, during the scene on the red carpet, James Woods refers to Drama as Johnny Chase.
And before the “drama wants new calves episode,” I think during season 1, there was an episode where turtle wsa calling drama out for not being Vinny’s full brother….

They probably have different biological mothers, but Johnny may have just gotten very close with Vince’s mom and now it is almost like she is is real mom.

I want to say same mother, separate fathers and they both just use their mother’s last name. But that line where Drama says “You got your mom’s calves. I got Dad’s” does throw that off a bit.
    A writer’s mix-up?

They are half brothers w/the same mother. They have different fathers, and the mother gave Johnny her 2nd husband’s surname for family homogeneity. Her 2nd husband might have adopted Johnny.

Maybe it’s not an error in writing. You could just be reading too much into this line. Perhaps his mum just has really nice calves.

It is a continuity error. Vince and Johnny are definitely half-brothers. If they have the same mother, why did Vince think Johnny was his cousin? Wouldn’t they have grown up in the same house calling their mother “Ma?” And why would Johnny refer to their mutual mother as “your mom” and his but not Vince’s father as “Dad?” The writers seem to have changed their mind on the family connection, hoping no one would notice. The only explanation is that Johnny just thinks of Vince’s mother as his mom too, but it seems odd for him to call himself her “first born” if she isn’t his biological mother.

Here’s a theory – same father, different mothers. Mercedes Reuhl was the first wife (Drama said he was the “firstborn”, and raised both brothers after the second wife either died or skipped out. Therefore, both of them think of her as Mom.

This show has made other goofs in the past. I was watching season 2 and at one point Ari says that Leonardo DiCaprio turned down Aquaman because he won’t go near water since making Titanic. So are they forgetting The Beach?

  • boo

They are half brothers, same father, Johnny is the older brother, his mom isn’t in the picture. He changed his name when he game to hollywood, I mean who’s real last name is Drama. Mercedes Reuhl is Vince’s mother, their dad’s second wife and Johnny’s stepmother.
