Vince Vaughn brings the sadness to 'Regis and Kelly'

Categories: Morning Madness

94320__vince_lHow do you spin a series of depressing anecdotes into pure comedy? Hand ‘em over to Vince Vaughn (pictured) and Kelly Ripa. The suddenly ubiquitous star of The Break-Up subbed for a vacationing Regis Philbin on this morning’s Live With Regis and Kelly, and once he got his 6-foot-5 frame accustomed to the set’s dimensions (”Bits of Vince can’t fit under the desk!" Ripa cheekily observed), the duo settled into a comfortable, if somewhat morose, comic groove. To wit:

-Ripa got the audience chuckling with a story about her son Michael breaking his arm the previous day during a game of Red Rover. (”Something had to give,” Vaughn said, ”and it wasn’t his pride.”)

-Asked by Ripa if he’d ever fractured any bones, Vaughn began to share a tale of a boyhood auto accident, then stopped short and pretended to get misty-eyed in a mock display of daytime-interview emotion.

-Guest Denis Leary explained how his not terribly bright dog died after gorging on 28 pounds of deer meat (!), an account that, unfortunately, didn’t prompt some much-needed follow-up questions from his hosts.

-And American Idol third-place finisher Elliott Yamin (who sounded amazing on ”Moody’s Mood for Love,” natch) got in on the act, too, revealing that his adorable mom is recovering from hip surgery — then teasing the hosts that she wasn’t recovering very well.

-At one point, Ripa called for an end to the emoting, declaring such shtick as strictly Oprah territory. ”We don’t help people here!” she shouted. But occasionally, they do make for some wacky-good morning TV.

Ha! Slezak, I think you posted this whole bit just so you could work Elliott Yamin into it! You’re incorrigible.

I watched this episode and Vince was hysterical. I think Kelly got a little frustrated when Vince and Denis started chatting about how funny the other one was and that they wanted to work together. Kelly had to do her best to steer the conversation back to Denis’ show.

Damn, wish I’d known Vince Vaughn was subbing. I would have actually watched that show for a change. It’s cliche, but he can read the phone book and I’d laugh my ass off.

Vince was SO funny, especially when talking about Red Rover like it was the Super Bowl. He also managed to talk about Jennifer Aniston without ever admitting that they’re dating. Talk about smooth.

Slezak–when I heard Elliott was going to be on this show–I just KNEW you would write something about it.
    Thank you–I miss him too!

I would have taped it so I could watch it later if I had know Vince and Elliott was on there. I don’t care for Kelly Ripa but could have overlooked that just to see them.

Kelly Ripa is a sexy mamma. I’d watch HER reading a phone book.

Does anyone have a link so that I can watch the part with Vince and with Denis?? Heck even Elliott?? I don’t see a torrent anywhere yet.

I hope that Elliott gets a recording contract, he is so deserving of one. I think he is one real sweetheart and he has a great voice.

Vince was terrific! He brought out the best in Kelly & was great with the guests. He is a modern raconteur and I hope that he gets more lengthy guest spots like this on more shows. He is so much more than Jen’s boyfriend,er, costar. Elliott was the cherry on top!

I was in the studio audience yesterday. I live in the same ‘hood as ABC and figured Elliot was worth hauling myself out an ungodly hour to try for standby tickets. (Either that or consider feeding the e-addiction by paying megabucks for an arena show that would also mean (horrors) Ace et al.) Got to the studio at 5:45 a.m. and found 15 people ahead of me, including three women in kelly green Yamin Machine tees and matching flip flops. After hours in line (the anxiety!), I was one of the last five admitted.
Show did seem on the morose side (maybe Vince had premonitions of stinker “Break-Up” reviews?) Elliot was sweet but short (but had a sense of humor about it–during commercial break, he was jumping up and down to see if he could be as tall as Vince. Kelly joked that she felt like she was Cirque du Soleil.). As for his hair, sweetie, listen to your stylists! As ever, he sang with feeling, although his vocal sounded very loud in the studio (which seemed to surprise him a bit too). It sounded lovely, though, when I replayed it on video. Was Elliot worth sleep deprivation and an endless wait? Definitely! Have never done this before for anyone else and hope not to do it again, until, maybe, the next time Elliot is back in town.
