Ben Kingsley: Self-parody on 'The Sopranos'

85357__sopranos_lThe Oscar-winning actor Ben Kingsley (pictured, at right) appeared on The Sopranos last night, playing himself. The fictional Kingsley is shown taking meetings with highly dubious "producers," who are peddling him a highly dubious film.

There are times when self-parody becomes uncomfortable for all of us. This is one of those times. Lest any of you forget, Ben Kingsley said yes to Bloodrayne. He said yes to Thunderbirds and Spooky House. Sure, he also says yes to The House of Sand and Fog and Sexy Beast. But for every good choice, there is an equal and opposite Sound of Thunder (or equivalent).

So the Sopranos producers made a very wry choice in selecting Kingsley, a pedigreed actor who continues to command respect, yet has a rep for taking anything that comes along. How horrible must Chris’ script be, then, if Kingsley turned it down? For the love of Ed Wood, the man has worked with Uwe Boll!

Next on The Sopranos: F. Murray Abraham? And Dyan Cannon getting kicked in the stomach?

You left Slipstream off the list, where he made a cameo talking to Bill Paxton and the hunter who got eaten in Jurassic Park.
Curiously enough, F Murray Abraham had a cameo later in the film.

I like that Kingsley made fun of his whoring ways. Could Sean Connery and the McDowell’s take a spin at this too?
One other thing. Anyone else get the impression that David Chase reads EW? That plotline about the free giftbags seemed to me lifted straight out of an EW article from a few months ago…

I thought it was over the top when they punched Lauren Bacall in the face and stole her gift basket

Yeah, I think we’ve all been beaten over the head enough with swag stories. And speaking of beaten, why can’t it be Wilmer getting punched in the face? Cinema icon or small-screen soul crusher? Tough choice.

    I thought Kingsley was great.
On top of the reasons Scott mentioned for why his casting worked (i.e. the fact that him taking a meeting for such a crappy movie was all too believable), I like that he was playing “himself” but not exactly: he kind of acted the way we would expect a famous celebrity to like him to act (taking all the free stuff, totally aloof toward this incredible lifestyle the whole time) And more specifically, the way Ben Kingsley would act (an air of refinement/snobbery) It’s kinda what John Malkovich did in “Being John Malkovich” I loved Kingsley’s profane response when he took his seat on the flight after seeing Chris on the plane.
And while I know lots of people think it’d be great if someone, ANYONE punched Wilmer Valderrama in the face, I thought it was much funnier and effective to have Lauren Bacall take it. The fact that she’s this legend, yet actually wouldn’t give up the basket was also funny.

Ben Kingsley was stupid, and almost pointless. What was AWESOME was Lauren Bacall getting smacked in the face. And Christopher stealing the swag bag for the greater good? THAT was priceless.

First off, House of Sand and Boredom was a worst choice for Sir Ben than were Bloodrayne, Thunderbirds, etc. More importantly, Sopranos jumped the shark with the Kingsley/Bacall apearances. David Chase’s scattershot approach shows his boredom and that it is time to put a bullet in the show.

You’re wrong, but it’s just not worth getting into.
    Lauren Bacall was priceless.

I think it’s about time someone beat up a celebrity for their swag. What do they need it for anyway? I mean, does Lindsay Lohan need (or deserve) seven pairs of sunglasses from Solstice [1]? But Ceballos you are completely on track with the Wilmer Valderama comment, if he had been punched in the face I would still be laughing about it. I hate that kiss-and-tell-too-much-information-on-howard loser!
