What's your secret iPod shame?

Categories: Music

So I was in the shower this morning, and what should come around the iPod shuffle bend? "The Things We Do for Love" by 10cc. If that doesn’t ring a bell, go to your favorite music-download service (iTunes definitely has it), listen to it, and come back. Yes, I’ll wait…

Now it’s already well established on these pages that I have no taste. But tell the truth — that hook is like aural gold, no? ("Like walking in the rain and the snow when there’s nowhere to go and you’re feeling like a part of you is dyin’…") You totally love it, right?

An informal survey (a.k.a., poking my nose into my coworkers’ shared folders) reveals that more than five of them also had 10cc in their iLineup. What are the chances? Interestingly, women seemed to favor 10cc’s airy, morose "I’m Not in Love," but that’s neither here nor there. Also in heavy rotation: the Beach Boys; Matthew Sweet; Ace of Base; Jack Johnson; and Dusty Springfield.

So tell us: What is your secret iPod shame? The thing you belt out in the shower (not that I was belting necessarily…) or gives you a secret smile on the bus when it comes on?

    Two words: Hall and Oates.

  • Kimmie G

I actually spent some time flipping through my iPod in order to include something here, acts such as Ace of Base, Bow Wow Wow, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, Carly Simon, and Corey Hart, but then I realized: I am not ashamed of the freakishly eclectic tunes on my iPod! I celebrate them!

“All This Love”, by El Debarge. Cripes, don’t listen to Muzak– it’ll hook you on turkeys faster than anything. I seriously love this song, though.

  • Ep Sato

“It Takes Two” by Rob Base and DJ Easy Rock. The 1986 hit has been remade into the “mating call” song on My Name is Earl. Every time it pops up on my mp3 player, I get this eeeevil grin!

  • Paul K

I agree with Kimmie – I am not ashamed!
But I have lots of Ace of Base, early Britney Spears, The A*Teens, Steps, S Club 7, S Club 8 “Sundown”, some of the American Juniors songs (including “Emotional” which is a great pop song), La Bouche, Real McCoy, etc.

  • Ep Sato

My truly shameful pleasure is female vocalists because it’s embarrasing for a burly looking guy (like me) to sing out loud such beauts as Pam Grier’s “Long Time Woman”, “Show Me” by the Cover Girls, “Me Myself and I” by Beyonce, “Nasty Girl” by the Vanity 6, “Respect” by Aretha Franklin, “I wonder if I’ll take you home” by Lisa Lisa, “Frenesi” by Linda Rondstadt. I should shut up now before making myself look even geekier than usual…

Abba. Take a Chance on Me.

  • Adair

Um… oldschool Michael Jackson. “Who’s Bad”, “Thriller”, etc.

  • nessa

I actually have Jack Johnson, Dusty Springfield and the Beach Boys on my iPod.
I will admit the following proudly….
I have the film soundtrack of THE SOUND OF MUSIC on my iPod. I amnot ashamed to admit that I sit at traffric lights and sing “The Lonely Goathearder”. It sounds great mixed in there with DMX and Prodigy.

I personally am not ashamed of any of the songs on my iPod. However, my kids have a tendency to cringe anytime Blossom Dearie, Nancy Wilson, Dusty Springfield or Mama Cass comes on. They also hate it when my gay disco classics (anything by Kristine W, my Sade “Pearls” remix, Janet, Madonna, Klymaxx, etc.)come on. I love to blast those songs when their football teammates are near by. (And yes, I know it’s not nice to torment my kids – it’s just that they give me grief from time to time so I feel I can give it back. Plus, I think they secretly like it – I have seen them tapping their feet to the beat from time to time).

Five words for you: New Kids on the Block

  • professor74

    Terence Trent D’Arby.

  • Susan

    Christmas music…all year long!

  • Pitchmeister

    Air supply….

  • lola

You Spin Me ‘Round (Like a Record) by Dead of Alive. The most AWESOME dance song of all time.

  • jeff

Good lord..where to begin. Big shames will have to be Menudo’s “If You’re Not Here”, Debbie Gibson’s “Only in My Dreams” Actually put what’’s on my Ipod on my MySpace page – all 3034 songs.

  • Fatima

Oh my god Ep Sato…. I love that Pam Grier song! I wouldn’t call a song about a woman in prison exactly girly.
I am ashamed that I have a couple songs by Christina Milian.

  • Don

Okay, my usual tastes run towards things like Joy Division, Interpol, Wire, all those pretentious bands like that. My secret shame?
PHIL COLLINS. Big, hefty, stinking, overproduced wads of ‘im (although I never forgave him for “Dance Into The Light”… shudder…). Collins-era Genesis, too. From the Broadway-weirdness of “Duke” to the shlockiest moments of “I Can’t Dance”.
Dork of the first order? Guilty as charged.

  • Nick

While making a Vegas Mix, I came across the song “Las Vegas Turnaround” which is by Hall & Oates, that song is killer! But I keep telling myself it’s Hall & Oates and not Arctic Monkeys, Beck, nor The White Stripes.
Oh well. I get excited when it comes on the iPod.

  • Don

Oh, yeah. Journey, too. Which one is more shameful?

  • daisyj

Oh god, I don’t even know where to start. “No Matter What”, by Boyzone? Katrina and the Waves’s “Walking on Sunshine”? (The song may not be that embarassing, but the way it gets me dancing is.) Meat Loaf? All worthy choices, but in the end I have no choice but to go with “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins. Sing it with me:
    Revvin’ up your engine
    Listen to her howlin’ roar
    Metal under tension
Beggin’ you to touch and go.
    Oh yeah.

  • N’Jeri

“Band of Gold” by Freida Payne or “More Than Yesterday” by Spiral Staircase always get me to sing at the top of my lungs.

  • Janean

5 more words for you: Lou Bega, “Mambo No. 5″

  • catheroo

Thank you, Popwatch, for letting me know who sings “The Things We Do for Love” and “I’m Not in Love.” Now 10cc can take their place among Leo Sayer, Milli Vanilli, Gordon Lightfoot, and the Brady Bunch.

  • Tim Lade

    Since you’ve been gooooooooooooooooooooooonnnneeee!
And anything by Madonna which I always have to guiltily say I am listening to because I am mixing a cd for a friend.

  • Michelle

Totally unrelated, but I am in shock that Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband, Daniel, will not be involved with GG when it moves to the CW. This is awful! The show won’t ever be the same without them! We need some Popwatch commentary on this shocking decision!

  • dh

Color Me Badd. Color me embarassed.

  • MGH

Tiffany. Debbie Gibson. The Go-Gos. Barry Manilow… Oh the list goes on and on.

  • mike

Although I couldn’t stand 99% of the crap from the last wave of boy bands, I do have Bye, Bye,Bye by NSynch on my ipod. Is there a support group I can call?

  • Ama

I love 10cc, I’m not ashamed to have them in my iPod at all.
Grouping 10cc with the likes of Milli Vanilli and the Brady Bunch is blasphemy.
