Thanks to linguists Tom and Katie, we all now know that ”Suri” supposedly means ”princess” in Hebrew and ”red rose” in Persian. (Alas, my Hebrew-to-English and Farsi-to-English dictionaries are in the shop, so I haven’t confirmed those translations.) Now, thanks to the U.K.’s Times Online, we also know that it means ”pickpocket” in Japanese. And of course, in every language, it means ”publicity blitz.” Anyway, I applaud the new parents for their cleverness in picking a name so versatile that, no matter where the little girl travels, she’ll be snickered at behind her back.

Suri could be Hebrew in origin but Sarah is the actual Hebrew name that means “princess”…. I think someone (Tom Cruise) needs to do a little more research on his child’s name… especially before sending out a press release.
I looked on babynames.com but Suri does also means “princess”. I’m not sure how realiable a source that website is, and I don’t know…for some reason I’ve been humming the same song since yesterday- “Suri with a fringe on top”. Ohhh, this poor child.
Yes, Sarah is the actual name that means Princess in Hebrew. I think many people know that, since Sarah is a very common and popular name. Anyway, I should know, because my name is Sarah – I do know the origin of my name.
Regarding the Persian roots of Suri, I think TomKat’s publicist is mistaken. My parents are Persian. I don’t speak Farsi well, having been born in Canada, but I asked them and they said red rose in Persian is NOT Suri. However, to give TomKat some credit, it is possible that Suri translates to red rose in very, very, VERY old Persian, a language that died over 1500 years ago.
The true definition:
Suri = Surrogate
Not sure who stated that, but it was the best joke I heard all morning and felt like sharing.
on Wikipedia they indicate that Suri is not a good name for a girl. Its also the name of an ethnic group in southwest Ethiopia. Its also a sanskrit word meaning ‘priest’ or ‘sage’. What is wrong with Tom Cruise??
Hrm, ANOTHER Suri PopWatch post?! I guess Scott Brown wasn’t joking when he said yalls plan on oversaturating the pen with all this TomKat nonsense. And to think…we still have Brangelina to look forward to…
:/
i did doubt the names meaning as well since, Sarai then Sarah in Hebrew means “princess”, but you never know…
Even still, i actually LIKE the name. i think it’s a pretty name for a girl and unusual without being laughable, in my opinion.
i’ve made plenty of fun of tomkat but i admit i like the name.
And, in French, “souris” (which is pronounced “suri”) means “mouse”…
What a lovely name… To sum, it means “princess”, “mouse”, “pickpocket” and “red rose”…
Well, that’s quite international!
Has this name got another hidden meaning?
The real meaning to the word “SURI” is she is from a SURIGATE mother, not Katie Homes.
Please please please please and please go to this website…

I love that they named their baby Suri especially after seeing this website. Man I hate Tom Cruise.
Soooooo, the kid was named after a camel?
hahaha Rishi so true. It could have also been the brand of ball that Katie carried in her belly. You never know.
Guess we all know now who’s having the “best week ever”
I friggin declare this story closed! This is post number 5 about the damn kid and it isn’t even 24 years old yet. If I read one more entry about Tom Cruise and Suri I will pull a full on Linda Blair and spit pea soup everywhere!
Wanna know this is a media frenzy cause the freeking media won’t let it go. Tom Cruise’s stunt only works if people pay attention so stop paying attention and focus on something more important, like me!
