Is Amanda Bynes poised to be the next Lucille Ball?
That’s what Today correspondent Natalie Morales suggested in an interview with the She’s the Man star (pictured, at left) this morning. But the real question: Who isn’t the "next Lucille Ball"? Over the years, TV and film critics have used that title to praise Teri Hatcher, Cameron Diaz, and Téa Leoni. And Fran Drescher. And Jennifer Garner. And Nicole Kidman. And Jessica Simpson. And, well, you get the point. In fact, there’s an entire website devoted to press clippings that invoke Ball’s name as a shortcut to describing an attractive actress with a knack for physical comedy.
So for the love of Vivian Vance, I implore current and future writers of the world to put an end to the use of this clichéd, and frequently inaccurate comparison. Thank you.

You forgot Debra Messing.
yeah…and why does there have to be a next Lucille Ball anyway? we already had the original, she will always be the best and she can be seen on t.v. to this day all over the world!
Why, why, oh why does EVERYTHING have to be re-made?? Can’t these Hollywood producers and directors leave these old tv shows alone and come up with something on their own??!! Is nothing sacred?? I ask that because I know nothing is original anymore.
There was only one Lucy and there will be only on Lucy, Lucille Ball.
Sorry, that was my rant for the “Dallas” re-make. I wouldn’t compare Lucille Ball to anyone. Now there’s a one-of-a-kind lady
I think that Teri Hatcher is lovely, but Michael Slezak is right on the money with this one.
OH-PUH-LEEZE! AMANDA BYNES IS A HORRIBLE ACTRESS. DO NOT SEE HER NEW MOVIE. IT’S NOT WORTH THE MONEY TO SEE SOME HORRIBLE ACTRESS PRETENDING TO BE A GUY WHO’S (HELLO) LOOKS LIKE A CHICK DRESSED UP AS SOME NERDY BOY. BUT THE ACTORS IN THE MOVIE ARE SOOOOOO CLUELESS! HOW CLUELESS DO YOU HAVE TO BE?
Actually, I’m the next Lucille Ball. Someone fund my personal training, and I’ll be ready by this time next year.
This movie will rock! It’s like Ladybugs all over again!
Sadly, I REALLY seem to want to see this movie that I would usually make fun of. It’s the “Just One of the Guys” guilty Pleasures categories… plus for some reason Amanda Bynes just makes me laugh in a good way.
Peri, you’re right on the money. I was just about to say that there’s only one actress that reminds me of Lucille Ball, and who can be properly compared to the lovely Lucille Ball. Debra Messing, with her facial expressions, her sweet dimwitedness (before anyone gets mad at me, I’m not saying that Lucille was dimwitted in real life, only her character was on the show) and her amazing physical humour, is a modern day comedic wonder!
Like Peri said, you forgot Debra Messing! That episode of Will and Grace where she has on the water bra is hilarious and the closest thing to Lucy that we’re gonna get.
The movie is horrible and Amanda Bynes is an idiot.
Lucy rules and has no comparisons.
Unless you count Bea Arthur?
A porvotcaive insight! Just what we need!
I agree with the others. I can’t BELIEVE you forgot Debra Messing. Another thing I can’t believe is how Ms. Messing wasn’t capitalizing on her comedic talent in her film choices. The Wedding Date was aweful! Let’s hope her future films are less drab.
The Disney Channel’s Raven (the girl who used to be on the Cosby Show) is much closer to Lucille Ball. As an adult I love her show, “That’s So Raven” because of the physical comedy.
