James Bond: News from the Bahamas set

92016__bond_lHow does Agent 007 fight his most troublesome foe: negative buzz? Perhaps by offering reporters a trip to the Bahamas, to the set of Casino Royale. That’s what the film’s producers did this week, and it seems to have paid off with an avalanche of mostly positive coverage from international print, TV, and online reporters.

For instance, USA Today writes that the film may be ”the first art-house-style 007 movie.” The paper’s article and an accompanying photo of Daniel Craig in action suggest that this will be a much grittier, grimier Bond movie than we’re used to, with a hero who relies more on his wits than on Q’s gadgets, which will be absent from the film. (USA Today also has a cast photo gallery.)

Reuters lets Craig defend himself against the hatas who say he’s miscast. Second-string Bond girl Caterina Murino tells MTV News that shooting a love scene with Craig ”felt very, very good. Danny is a great actor and I was comfortable with it. Very sexy. He has a great, huge body. He’s very sexy, I think the sexiest in James Bond’s history.” Okay, okay, we get it.

Fans who want more reassurance, or who just want to see some cool behind-the-scenes footage, can watch the TV reports from Extra and the BBC. And there’s still more news from the set at SuperHeroHype, including a mild spoiler about the new opening sequence.

So, are you finally feeling shaken and stirred about Casino Royale? Can we finally spill that Craig Haterade down the drain, or do you remain unconvinced?

Excuse me-? Bond WITHOUT “the gadgets”…???
What’s the point then-? That’s PART of the Bond mystique! (Excuse the shameless X-Men III plug…)
I don’t know if I like the sound of this – I don’t like the sound of this at all! Didn’t they already try a “grittier, grimier” Bond with Timothy Dalton??? (THUD!)
Well, I may go and see it – but I don’t have to like it!

I am telling you- all Bond fans need to see Layer Cake and they will have no more worries. The man is hot, and bada**. He will make a great Bond.

Still not buying it. I happen to like the flashy Pierce Brosnan Bond, with lots of Q gadgets. And I’m really not interested in Daniel Craig. Bleh.

Bond without EXCESSIVE gadgets should be the rule of the House. Pierce Brosnand wasn’t the problem with the his Bond films, the writers and a distinctive lack of Cubby Brocolli were.
This film will be no different unless they hire different writers.

Wow. Just noticed Felix Leiter is being played by an African-American actor…
    …oh, how soon we forget.
Also, if Felix isn’t missing his arm and leg in this movie, I’ll refuse to see it on principal of continuity alone (the Afro-American thing notwithstanding)

I am a fan of Daniel Craig – especially after Layer Cake. I think he will be wonderful and different.

WOAH. The bahamas? OH HELL TO THE NO.
Casino Royale took place in Monaco and near the soutern coast of France. What’s up with the relocation? They’ve filmed dozens of these bond films in the Bahamas, YAWN.
Next you folks are going to tell me that the hottie in the movie WON’T be named Vesper either. No wonder this upcoming piece of trash is getting panned already…

    A few items:
Bond without gadgets is a little disturbing, that was a lot of the fun of the Bond character and mystique–plus John Cleese is a great Q!
Felix will not be missing any body parts b/c Royale takes place before Felix got fed to the sharks in License to Kill.
I’ve seen Layer Cake and although Craig is a good actor, he just doesn’t have the charisma or suaveness to be Bond.
Brosnan was the best Bond since Connery and I think that the producers made a HUGE mistake in not bringing him back to do one more. Brosnan would have done a final Bond film–it was the producers who didn’t want him back.
Shameful for the producers to turn their back on the man who single-handedly rescued the franchise and brought it back to international success!

Daniel Craig will make a great Bond. He is HOT and a great, charismatic actor. All the women are going wild for him. End of discussion.

  • Maria

I like that he’s not so pretty. I find him very sexy and appealing. Being a girl, the Bond movies have never really interested me but I will probably check this one out.

  • natacha

i agree…did u see that bulge in the bathing suit he was wearing!!! hotttttttttt.

Bond Haters? Gee, isn’t EW the original home of the hater? Like how EW hated on the past few Bond Films with the great and dependable Pierce Brosnan, totally missing the fact that the public loved them and they were the most successful Bond flicks ever?
The jury will be out on Daniel Craig until the movie comes out. Any opinions before then are nothing but speculation.
Decide for yourselves, don’t let EW decide for you.
