Deals: Mos Def, Stephen King, John Cusack

9417__sophie_l-Mos Def and Hotel Rwanda‘s Sophie Okonedo (pictured) are in talks to costar in Stringbean and Marcus, a period indie drama about two former Black Panthers members in and out of love in 1978.

-It’s been a good week for Stephen King. Variety reports today that John Cusack will star in 1408, based on the King short story about a debunker of paranormal phenomena who checks into a haunted hotel room. It’ll be directed by Mikael Hafstrom (Derailed) and written by The People vs. Larry Flynt screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. The news comes a day after the announcement that Eli Roth (Hostel) is attached to direct the adaptation of King’s new novel Cell.

I only hope this portrayal of the Black Panthers show them as a group of middle class, educated people who made a difference (school lunch and breakfast programs are part of their legacy), instead of as the gangsters they were portrayed as in the last few movies made about the Panthers.

1408 sounds exciting. Anything involving John Cusack (well, except Must Love Dogs and Serendipity that is) gets my attention. Can’t wait. Aside from that, Mr. King outdid himself with his latest column – bravo!! I love his columns every time, but this one is by far the one I felt most passionate about.

John Cusack in a spooky hotel? Haven’t I already seen that movie? Wasn’t it called Identity?
That said, who am I kidding…I love both Cusack and King, and will probably see the movie anyway…

Not only does the film star two of my favorite actors, it has a very interesting subject, and my name is in the title!

Really looking forward to 1408. Not only are John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson great, but so is Mary McCormack, who played Howard Stern’s wife in “Private Parts”. The first trailer was released for 1408 this week, and you can find it here:

“1408” looks awesome! Putting Cusack together with a King story is a “no-brainer”! Plus, the original story is apparently inspired by a real-life parapsychologist/paranormal researcher named Christopher Chacon who was investigating a well-known haunted room at the historic Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego. Only the core inspiration to King’s story came from Chacon’s investigation since King’s story and the movie apparently gets pretty wild and ‘out there’. I’ll be in line on opening day!
