Mariah Carey's next (gulp) movie role

Categories: Deals, Film, Music

113027__mariah_lDo Mariah Carey and movies belong together? Apparently, producer Lee Daniels (Monster’s Ball) thinks so, as he’s cast the pop star in the indie drama Tennessee, in which she’ll play a waitress who tries to locate her long-lost father after her brother is diagnosed with leukemia. Daniels told Variety that he’d never seen Carey’s 2001 debacle Glitter (well, duh!), but that her recent musical comeback and her work in 2002’s Wisegirls convinced him she was right for the part.

(I would weigh in with an opinion, but my therapist has advised me not to — Glitter flashbacks and all. You understand, right?)

So I leave it you, PopWatchers? What do you think? Does Carey deserve a second chance at movie stardom, or is this an ill-advised decision that’ll put her resurgent singing career at risk?

Everybody deserves a second chance. On the other hand, with so many talented, beautiful, underemployed actresses out there, I can’t imagine ignoring the pros in favor of a pop singer. Personally, I’d like to see Nia Long in a movie a little more frequently than every three years.

SHE IS THE GREATEST SINGER IN THIS MOMENT,BUT THAT DOESN’T MAEN ,THAT IT’S ALL SHE CAN DO,SHE CAN BE BETTER THAN THAT.SHE DESEVES A SECOND CHANCE.WHAT WOULD OU SAY ABOUT IT? ISN’T THAT RIGHT YOU GUYS.

Hell NO!! Mariah Carey’s “comeback” is attributed to crafty producers and a great PR campaign. She can’t even act… all her videos over the years have all been the same she is incapable of conveying anything but a blank Vapid look. I turn off the TV/Radio whe she comes on why would I waste 10 bucks to see her on the big screen.

Give her a shot at a small part to begin with, but NOT a starring role. It’s true, there are many many talented actresses around who do not get enough good work, and it doesn’t seem fair that someone will get this possibly plum role because of fame achieved in another area of entertainment. Sometimes it works out: Mos Def and Ludacris are good examples, but usually its a disaster: Madonna, DMX, Shaq, Madonna….

Glitter opened during the week of 9/11. It could have done better, couldn’t have gone much worse. I think she deserves a second chance.

hiring popstars to act means more work for the editor and director. what the director can’t get her to fake the editor has to clean up.
but it means big bucks in the box office for an indie film, not usually box office hits. it also means that regular listeners of mariah are probably not to frequent indie films, but they will to see her and they just might get turned on to films that touch their soul in a way that medea and her antics just cant do.

    No stick to singing only.
All these singers….Mariah, Madonna, J-Lo..they all want to act, but its too hard to forget about their pop persona when I see them in a role. Because they are SO big in the pop world, I can’t buy into them in ANY role.

A waitress??? A waitress??? Will she allow her roots to show? To allow herself to look less gussied up? If she is serious about embarking on a career in movies, she should start small and do non-starring roles in movies and not jump out of nowhere to a starring role. Mariah, Mariah, Mariah. I think you sorround yourself with spineless, yes people who don’t have the guts or the wisdom to tell you like it is. Yes, I am talking to you too Tom.

  • Sarah

She did a decent job in Wisegirls. I think lesser actresses have been very successful in movies with a good director and a good script.

  • shirley

NO! She does NOT deserve a second chance at anything. she already got one for her music and we are already suffering!! She really can’t act, unless it’s an unintentional comedy!

  • GIO

I’m Pysched to read Mariah is going to give it a try again. I actually saw wisegirls and was pleasantly surprised by her performance..She was good. she does deserve a second chance. if J.Lo and For God’s sake Madonna can count themselves as actress’, then Mariah should be fine

  • annie

Oh Please, no. Stick to singing Mariah
I for one, wish she would stop making music videos.

  • jon

J.Lo isn’t a singer who wants to be an actress, she’s was first a wannabe actress and dancer… singing, unfortunately, came later…

  • Howard

What a ridiculous question. Why is it a question of her getting a “second chance”? She made one bad movie (OK, a REALLY bad movie), and because of that, she should never be in another one? I guess if that were the case, then Johnny Depp shouldn’t have done anything after “A Nightmare on Elm Street”, or Tom Cruise after “Losin It”, or Jack Nicholson after “Little Shop of Horrors”.
If she makes a good movie that people go see, good for her. If not, too bad. But if she wants to be in another film and someone wants to hire her, it’s not a question of what she deserves.

  • Eh

They keep giving Madonna chances to act… Why not let Mariah give it another try.

  • Butterfly

Lets see .. one REALLY BAD MOVIE shouldnt direct the path of your acting career. If that was the case ALOT OF ACTORS/ACTRESS would be in the unemployement line!! Mariah you go girl … do the damn thing and show these idiots what you are made of (dont let me down please)

  • Phyllis Gabor

Um, let’s see … she played a waitress in that Mira Sorvino movie WISEGIRLS and she was motherless in GLITTER … So this TENNESSE is basically a merging of the two.
Mariah should just disappear, her “DIVA” posing is so old and tired … maybe she should concentrate on getting rid of her back fat and those terrible implants!

  • Liza

Give the girl a second chance, so she can fall flat on her face once again. Maybe then people will finaly realize she has no talent

  • Ned

I’m sure Glitter was bad, like most, I never saw it, but I did see her in Wisegirls, and she wasn’t bad in that.

  • eddie

Mariah had already captured her audience through her music. She has the talent & she had proven herself in that category. She’s already a musical icon from the 90’s until now.
I’ve seen Glitter & Wisegirls and I can say that she has a lot of potentials! Given the right script, right director, right cast & of course the right movie company that will support her all the way, she’ll make it.
I think with her stature, she does not need to prove anything. She’s ready to move on to another stage…

  • maria

There are so many good actresses that deserve a leading role!!!!!!!!!!
    Not her!

  • Miles

Everyone in the world deserves a second chance. Go for it… I won’t be at the theatre to see it, but I wish her the best… I’m just not a big Mariah fan either way.

  • Robert

Any horrific actress can be good in a movie, depending on the script, director and how talented their co-stars are. Just watch Out of Sight to see that J-Lo isn’t always that terrible, just usually. It all depends on the other people in the movie. But, if they’re going to give her a part that asks her to carry the movie…..they’re in trouble.

  • johnathan

Of course she deserves another chance, and it’s incredibly smart of her to take a low-key, supporting role in an independent movie instead of trying to anchor a big hollywood project. If the writing and directing can come together, then the movie might be pretty okay after all. We’ll have to see how it comes along, but so far, so good.

  • Tanya

I think Mariah deserves a chance with this film. “Glitter” wasn’t great, we all know that. She didn’t have THE starring role in “Wisegirls.” That was Mira. She did her little cameo in “The Bachelor.” So, why not star in an indie film to help get her acting career back on track…should she choose to seek a future in acting. I think this is a much better route than her starring in a feature film. I love Mariah, but she needs a little more practice in the acting field. Once, and if, she can master it, then she should go for feature films.

Now I’ve been a Mariah fan since day one, but I can’t watch her hit the big screen again. It has nothing to do with second chances and everything to do with profession. Singers should sing, actors should act, and folks should stick to what they know how to do well (of course, leaving room for people who are really multi-talented). Mariah can sing her butt off — let’s get another album together and forget acting.

  • Rashaan

Okay has Mariah not learned from her past? She is not an actress. What she needs to do is just enjoy the successes of her lastest album and not do anything to take away from that (at least right now). Some people are just not meant to act and she is one of those people. I can just imagine Mariah with her chubby cheeks and cheesy breast implant as a down to earth waitress???????…LOL @ the thought…Stick to what you excel at Mariah…create a perfume, a skimpy dress line….anything except for you trying to act??..ummmm why is there film being wasted here and as I recall didn’t “Wisegirls” go straight to video? I think her performance in glitter was ten times better and that in itself is not saying anything positve at all…Mariah do not embarrass yourself or in this case me…LOL…

  • EP Sato

I won’t touch Glitter, it’s too easy. Mariah’s best work as an “actress” came when she played roles that parodied her own persona. When she cameo’d on “Ally McBeal” as a beautiful diva (who couldn’t get any dates because of her massive ego), it was pretty darned high-larious.
Mariah’s not made for dramatic, Oscar nominated roles and should be happy with simple cameos. I understand she isn’t happy ruling JUST pop music, but even Octavious Ceasar knew when to quit…

  • roxie

Good for Moo-riah! She was fun in ‘Wisegirls.’ But is there a movie screen big enuff to fit that supersized booty?
