Oscar Watch: This year's set design

Categories: Oscars 2006

154759__set_lOscar spoiler! Get yer Oscar spoiler here! No, I’m not talking about Philip Seymour Hoffman’s virtual lock on Best Actor (sorry, Heath!), and alas, I’m not privy to any of Jon Stewart’s planned punch lines either. But we do have a sneak peak at what the stage will look like at the Kodak Theatre come March 5. Designer Roy Christopher calls it ”a no-holds-barred return to classic Hollywood glamour, paying homage to old movie theaters," complete with a 65-foot-long ‘Oscar’ marquee, and two 20-foot frosted-glass Oscar statuettes. To our eyes, it also appears to pay homage to cruise ships, Caesar’s Palace, and the card room at our great-aunt’s retirement community, but what do we know?

What a grisly confection – it looks just like a cake decoration. For an extra dollar, you can add a soccer ball and a dinosaur figurine.
Is this set a portent of – merciful God no – a musical number or a dance? That’s a part of classic Hollywood glamour, too, you know.

Is this where they have the $2.99 shrimp cocktail special? How about penny slots?

  • Thad

    ghastly my dear, just ghastly!

  • Connie

that’s gonna look AWESOME while someone raps “It’s Hard Out There for a Pimp” Totally classic.

    Isn’t a 20ft statuette a contradiction? Doesn’t statuette imply a small statue?
Well it is hoaky looking, but I like it! It’s fun, like it’s over the top, but that’s what they were going for, so it’s ok.

What was even funnier than the set design was all of the “Extra”, “ET”, etc. showbiz gossip shows all trumped that they had an exclusive look at the “Top Secret” design. Apparently Scooter Libby was in charge of the Top Secret designation.
    Classic Hollywood? Classic Vegas.

It’s funny cause as I was looking at this picture you can notice a small person in the bottom right hand corner…and I swear to God. My first thought was…Grandma?

and on second thought. Dosen’t the Oscar logo at the very top look strikingly like the Cheers Logo?

Sometimes less is more. Ghastly stuff.

I found this set the best ever for the show! It was completly instyle with the trends of retro that is so popular right now.
I am a designer of gifts and this is very much the look. I loved it!

So, what do you folks think? Was the screen across the top a projection? LCD? or digital effects that couldn’t be seen from the audience?
