TV Deals: Matthew Perry, Chi McBride, and 'Brokeback' writers

85915__matt_lSince my living-room DVR is only 89 percent full today, I figure I’ll have room for, say, at least two or three new series come this fall. Here’s my fuzzy-mathematical peek at a few pilots the networks will be mulling in the coming months:

A) Saturday Night Live + Sports NightFriends + The Hughleys = Matthew Perry (pictured), D.L. Hughley, and Steven Weber cast in Aaron Sorkin’s pricey NBC pilot about backstage drama at a hit sketch-comedy series

B) Everybody Loves Raymond + The Larry Sanders ShowCurb Your Enthusiasm = Jeff Garlin‘s TBS comedy-variety pilot from Raymond producer Phil Rosenthal

C) Sisters + Related ÷ Alias = Brothers & Sisters, a potential ABC drama with Ron Rifkin as the uncle of a group of siblings

D) 24 x Boston PublicBoomtown = Chi McBride in an ABC pilot about the lives of nine folks held hostage during a bank robbery

E) Brokeback Mountain x Close To Home + EverwoodMajor Dad = Sheriff Luke, ABC’s pilot from Golden Globe-winning writers Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, about a widower raising two kids and fighting crime in a Midwestern town

Which show are you most likely to watch,PopWatchers?

(Follow the jump for Mike’s answer…)

While none of these pilots actually sound too bad to me, I’m probablymost jazzed about options A. and E. The latter has a pretty lame title, giving a slight edge to the Sorkin show in my own personal Excit-o-meter.

I’m digging DL Hugley but feel as if Matt Perry doesn’t get it. As the least attractive, funny and appealing of the Friends cast members, he needs to go home and count his millions rather than try to ride this one trick pony any further.
I gotta go with Jeff Garlin’s concept series. He’s one of the highlights of Larry David, and it looks as if he’ll get another chance to make “Big Bowl of Wrong” a popular catchphrase.

i love matthew perry! how dare you say he’s unattractive.
    oh, it’s on EP! :)
I don’t think any of these sound that great. “e.” just sounds bad… and the title. ugh.

You know, if you record at ‘Good’ quality you can fit a lot more on a Tivo. That said, aside from maybe A, I don’t see myself trying to make room for any of these- and that’s for the concept, not the stars.

I would follow Sorkin into series on SpikeTV if I had to. The man is a genius playwright and his dialogue is some of the best on television. There is a reason the awards crapped out for The West Wing after Sorkin left, the show virtually sucked (minus the rejuvination this year). Having said that, I will be mad at Sorkin if he creates a fantastic show in the still to be naked series and then drops it like third period french and lets the butcher of NBC (John Wells) take over to destroy more Sorkin brilliance. Here endeth the lesson.

I meant that to say named not naked. The series is clearly not naked. Stupid Prime Minister designate is draining my soul and clearly my ability to write.

I don’t know, a still to be naked series sounds like fun. Might have to air on Showtime, though.

I’ll watch anything Aaron Sorkin touches. Nobody writes like he does.
I love Ron Rifkin though, so if his series gets some good buzz, I’ll check that out too.
I’ll have room on my TiVo since Alias and West Wing are ending.

I like Matt Perry too – he was so funny and good on Friends. But like all the Friends cast, he’s typecasted now, hard to shake that role, cripes Friends is on 24/7 in reruns, overkilled it.
Friends gang have a better chance at success and shedding their Friends image when the play in small/support roles in TV or movies (like Courtenay Cox & Lisa Kudrow), than big starring vehicles (like Joey or anything Jennifer Aniston is in).

I think that given the right material and character, Matthew Perry can get away from his persona from Friends. I think that this was proven when he guested on The West Wing a few years back, so will give him another chance with Sorkin’s new gig.

i vote for A. i was a friend’s fan and a HUGE wings fan for weber, so i think it could be really funny especially with nutty DL in the mix.

Yes, Matthew Perry was good on West Wing, but that was a smallish role, which is what I mean…best off as a supporting character, not a main star, in large. But that said, if anybody from the guy Friends can pull it off, it would be him as he’s likeable.

I’m not really a fan of anyone in the cast so far, but I love Sports Night, so I’m hoping the Aaron Sorkin show will be good.

  • Michael

Aaron Sorkin. Nuff said. I am there.
