UPN + The WB = The CW?

Some questions stemming from today’s surprise announcement that UPN and the WB are merging this fall into a new network called the CW:

-What does the CW stand for? CBS and Warner Bros. (the new network’s owners)? Conventional Wisdom? Country & Western?

-UPN and the WB currently program a combined 23 hours a week in primetime; the CW will program just 13 hours. Which current shows will make the cut, and which will go the way of Michigan J. Frog? (The press release suggests that America’s Next Top Model, Beauty and the Geek, Smallville, Gilmore Girls, Supernatural, Veronica Mars, Everybody Hates Chris, Girlfriends, Reba, and Smackdown will all make the transition; that’s already 9 1/2 of 13 available hours.)

-Speaking of Michigan J. Frog, what will be the CW’s mascot?

-Crows and Walruses? Cwazy Wabbit? Chickens and Woodpeckers?

-The CW will be pursuing the 18-34 demographic. Were these young people underserved before?

-Children and Women? Chuck Wagon? Call of the Wild?

my fear is that Everwood won’t make the cut to the new Crappy Weak network :( Great drama.

I hope Everwood makes it too. Also, what about the Aquaman show…was that set to start in the fall?

I don’t care what it stands for as long as they keep Everwood!! I hope EW will pull for this show that it put on the top 10 of 2005 list.

  • SF

If they don’t keep Related I’ll be so pissed. Last night’s episode was so good by the way.

  • Paul

I vote for Related and Twins! (It is actually funny!)

i hope one tree hill, everwood, and gilmore girls stay. i watch basically everything on the wb but those are my fav. i hope they don’t get cancelled.

    I hope Veronica Mars doesn’t go anywhere…

After the Gilmore Girls, Everwood is the best thing on the WB. I don’t know why they replace it with Beauty and the Geek.

It’s brilliant. Their shows won’t compete and they can pull greater market from Fox and NBC.

First of all… trimming the fat from both networks will do a world of good. As it stands, neither network has the budget to continue competeing directly with each other in major markets, and has lost out due to poor affiliation (some places only have one or the other.) Most of the shows aren’t exactly quality (with the exception of “Gilmore”, “Mars”, and “Everybody Hates” everything else is mostly timefiller. I direct the posters to the The WB’s “Beginnings” block, which are syndication-style repeats to catch new viewers up on now-popular shows.)
As far as what CW stands for, well this is such a good idea that “CW” stands for “can’t work.”

I don’t like change! I fear and it confuses and disorients me!
That said, I agree that while both networks have good shows, there’s mostly not good shows on both. Veronica Mars is the only show I watch on UPN, and Top Model is a good show too. WB, all I care about it Gilmore Girls. But their Friday and Sunday programming is terrible and could definitely stand for something better. Also, if they would move Veronica Mars so it’s NOT against Lost, that would be so awesome.

I don’t mind the merge (actually, I think it’s a good idea), just so long as they KEEP EVERWOOD!! There will be serious wrath from the fans if they cancel that show, which is the best show on both the WB and UPN.
EW, help! Don’t let them cancel Everwood!! :(

While I am very happy to see faves like “Gilmore Girls”, and “Veronica Mars” sharing a home, I fear that with this new network, there might be some major scheduling conflicts. With one less channel to tune into everynight, the chances of two or more of your favorite shows airing at the same time increase. I can think of it now…”CSI” versus “Veronica Mars”…ugh

Cold Water? Caring Wolverine? Carp Walkers?

  • Kirby Holt

Well, at least they didn’t go with the WC …..
