Hey, kids! Wanna get married, MTV-style?

Categories: Reality TV

Ever have one of those days when you can feel yourself morphing into your mother? You know, when you find yourself grumbling under your breath about ”these kids today” and the decline of Western civilization in general? Well, it happened to me this afternoon after a friend alerted me to an MTV casting call seeking folks between the ages of 18 and 21 who want their weddings televised on the so-called music channel. Here’s an excerpt:

”Who says you’re too young to get married? You think you’re ready…. What are you fighting about along the way? What’s bringing you closer together? Are you going to go through with it? Maybe you’ll elope!!!”

I wonder what MTV will call this series? My Big Fat Teen Wedding? Pimp My Bride? Not that I’m saying there aren’t any 19-year-olds mature enough to walk down the aisle. It’s just that I’m not sure they’re the same ones who’d want to take their vows on the network responsible for Room Raiders, Date My Mom, and My Super Sweet 16.

What do you guys think? Should I just take my Geritol and settle down, or does the concept for this show make you a little queasy, too?

I see this as no more wrong than Fox’s “Who wants to be Married by America” or “Who wants to Marry a Millionaire”. It’s bad form, but what should really strike you all is how unoriginal this concept is. Also, how anti-MTV’s message this is. Marriage seems so Anti-Rock and Roll, anti-youth, and Anti-Nonconformist. MTV’s made millions telling kids what is cool (sex, drugs, rock and roll) and what is not cool. But Marriage as a hot and new trend? This seems so azz backwards for MTV. Is John Ashcroft the new President of MTV?

What’s funny, EP Sato, is that marriage is the new cool thing. Look at all the young celebs rushing to get married, the MTV crowd is bound to follow suit, and no one thinks of it as a life-long committment anymore cuz divorces and annulments are made to look so simple and not a big deal.

MTV is non-conformist? When did this happen? I guess I always suffered under the delusion that MTV was about, more than anything, conformity – conforming to the standards that they present, they clothes they wear, the pop music they sell. Mtv is all about selling their own image. Non conformists would shun that image.

Ugh – when I was younger I used to wish we got MTV in Canada – now I am comfortable saying that America can keep it. It’s ridiculous.

I personally don’t trust MTV. I noticed the subject before coming in here saying saying MTV doesn’t have conformity.I believe that’s there game. They pretend to care by showing peoples lives. They turn a word like conformity and make it mean something else.
MTV reminds me of Hitlers youth not the same in ideas but in methods.
I mean as an example leading a crowd in a certain direction and playing to wants and needs.Consumerism’s youth. I could be wrong but it’s from observation.
