Who is the Entertainer of the Year?

Anticipating this morning’s Golden Globes nominations, the folks at E! picked the cast of Desperate Housewives. Announcing their pick in their special The Big, Bad and Best: 2005! (which will repeat several more times over the next week), the E! people picked the ladies of Wisteria Lane from a pool of 2005’s noteworthy performers, including Chris Rock, Charlize Theron, Jamie Foxx, Jake Gyllenhaal, Kanye West, Mariah Carey, Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Steve Carell, Terrence Howard, and Vince Vaughn.

Agree? Disagree? Who’s your pick for the Entertainer of 2005?

Why on earth would you have Mariah Carey on that list and not include Kelly Clarkson? Kelly was definitely the Entertainer of the Year if you ask me. Two sold out tours, 4 number ones, quadruple-platinum sales, and one of only four artists to spend an entire year in the top 20 of the Billboard 200. Also, Kelly can actually sing live without relying on backing tracks every time she performs. This was definitely the year of Kelly Clarkson, and I think EW needs to recognize that.

Yep, agreed–well, sort of. Although mariah had the biggest song of the year, Kelly did have 4 top ten singles, thats one more than mariah, and for a few weeks had two songs in the top 10 at the same time. I’d keep mariah on the list and just add kelly to it as well.

Ahhhh! why didn’t you let us be surprised when we got to the mailbox on Friday? You should have put up a SPOILER notice.
As for my vote for Entertainer of the Year, what about J.K. Rowling? She had the number 1 book and the second highest-grossing movie of the year. Or what about the cast of the last Star Wars? Between the Clone War movies, the video games and Return of the Sith (plus the fact that the series is over” should warrent it a place in the Top 10. But I agree that Steve Carrell and Terrence Howard should be on the list. As for Vince Vaughn, what’s he done this year other than “Wedding Crashers” where he’s still doing the same schtick he did in “Swingers” and “date” Jennifer Aniston?

  • Ed

Folks, this is E!’s list, not EW’s. The television network, not this magazine. Different companies.

The MUCISIANS with the best year were Green Day. Their album outsold Clarkson and Carey, if you include sales of American Idiot for three months of last year. They collected many more awards along the way and all of this while rock radio stations were disappearing. By the way, the songs were better.

Easily Madonna should win Entertainer of the Year – her new cd is not only the best of the year, but one of the best of her very long career. Props should also be sent to:
Lauren Ambrose – her potrayal of Claire on Six Feet Under was just amazing.
Catherine Keener – she is a truly amazing actress
Mary Louise Parker & Elizabeth Perkins – they made “Weeds” the best show on television this year.
Kanye West – love his music, just wish he’d check his ego.
Steve Carrell – he was brilliant in the 40YO Virgin.
Reese Witherspoon & Joaquin Phienix – awesome performers
Jason Lee & Jamie Pressley – They make “My Name is Earl” the best show on network television.

  • Tim

    Mariah Carey wins my pick

  • EP Sato

Jason Lee from my name is Earl. Dude, that guy went from nobody (sorry Kevin Smith, “almost famous” and pro skateboard fans, but it’s true) to the star of one of the best sitcoms, and he did it his own way.
The ladies of Hysteria lane are so 2004 it hurts. Hasn’t everyone been talking about how half assed season 2 has been? Are they going to choose the Season 1 cast of the Sopranos in 2006? Very poor choice, AND they claim to know a thing or two about pop culture.

  • Nicole

So should have been Jake Gyllenhaal (Jarhead and Brokeback – amazing in both). Or as a second option, the cast of Arrested Development. As my third choice, I would probably say ANYONE BUT THE CAST OF DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES!!!! Seriously, if I see one more award for that brain-dead show with a boring premise… Sorry, rant over.

  • Gian

    MARIAH CAREY!!!
She should be THE ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR!!!
    …nothing follows!

  • boom

    definitely Mariah carey…

  • Travis

    1) Steve Carrell for 40-year-old virgin and the Office
    2) Jason Lee for My Name is Earl
    3) Jake Gyllenhaal for Jarhead and Brokeback Mountain
    4) Christian Bale for Batman Begins
    5) Serj Tankian and Daron Malakian from System of a Down for Mezmerize and Hypnotize

  • Brandon

I agree with boxofficegoddess that the cast of Star Wars (or maybe at least George Lucas). A sort of acknowledgement of all that Star Wars has done for entertainment throughout the year and the last few decades.

  • Howard

Entertainer of the Year should be either Jamie Foxx (holdover for Ray, plus Jarhead, Stealth and the hit singles with and without Kanye West) or George Clooney (Good Night and Good Luck and Syriana). Semi-finalists should include the casts of ABC’s serials (DH, Grey’s Anatomy and Lost), Mariah (Comeback of the Year), JK Rowling, Kelly Clarkson and Steve Carrell.

  • Joe C

    Mariah Carey, of course!

  • Poopy

JESUS IS THE ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR!

  • Nancy

I think it should be Jamie Foxx. He had a ton of movies out, and the ones that stunk weren’t his fault. He sings, he can (obviously) act, and he’s funny. Other possibilities: the casts of Grey’s Anatomy and My Name is Earl (not DH! the buzz from that show has definitely cooled), Terrence Howard, Mariah Carey (comeback of the year, for sure), Kelly Clarkson, J.K. Rowling, Rachel McAdams, and Kanye West. Please…not Madonna. Can’t stand her, never could.

  • sowhatnow

Oprah – she can make (any book on her list) or break a career (Tom Cruise) in one hour or less. Though I am not a fan of her righteousness and media over exposure, she knows how to work the media for her causes and beliefs. And Dave should agree as her appearance was one of his finest hours in a long while.

  • justjudith

Oprah! Because she turned Letterman to jelly. Not to mention the deconstruction of Cruise & her Broadway debut. Or Jake Gyllenhaal for making solid films — Proof, Jarhead and Brokeback!! Or Bobby & Whitney bc this summer woulda been hell with out them: The forest is over!!!

  • jason

sorry, being the BIGGEST mariah fan in the world, i have to go with mariah carey. “mimi” is her best CD ever, you haters can stop calling her fat, i like my mariah being HERSELF (there’s a novel concept in america), she’s number one on the digital tracks chart with an 11-year old song (knocking eminem out, take that marshall), she’s about to have her 17th number one (tying elvis, you go girl), and should win at least a couple grammys (cross your fingers lambs). don’t call it a comeback, she’s been here for years. mariah, much love, you deserve it!!!

  • Bryan

    its…MARIAH CAREY!!! of course!
    no more, no less!
    SHE’S THE BEST!!!

  • Linda

Anyone BUT Steve Carrell. We were in London’s Heathrow airport in August and my 17-year old son recognized him directly in front of us in a very long line. At the time, I didn’t even know who he was, but my son was quite excited to see him. So I politely asked his wife, who was directly in front of me if her husband was indeed the guy my son thought he was. I asked quietly and discreetly, thinking that perhaps I could get a picture or an autograph for my son who would have been incredibly thrilled. I was told in no uncertain terms that he just looked like him, but no it was not him. It most definitely WAS him. Who do these “stars” think they are? It wasn’t like they were eating a meal or with their families in which case I would not have interrupted. I was not disrupting any private time. Instead of making my son the happiest kid on earth and a die-hard fan forever…we now think Carrell is a stuckup jerk. You see celebrities on t.v. all the time signing autographs and posing for pictures with fans. If they don’t want the adulation and the attention, don’t go in the business.
