Snap Judgment: Golden Globes nominations

9233__eva_lSo the Golden Globes nominations just came out, and even though I’m not 100 percent caffeinated, I’m going to share my gut reactions.

First of all, on the TV front, I’m elated that Eva Longoria (left), whose flawless comic timing is keeping Desperate Housewives afloat this season, scored a nomination for best actress in a comedy. But where the heck is Lisa Kudrow for The Comeback? I’d have left out Teri Hatcher, or — dare I say it? — Marcia Cross to make room for the woman who so vividly brought Valerie Cherish to life on HBO’s now cancelled sitcom. And, speaking of ignored shows and performances that could’ve used a little help from the Hollywood Foreign Press, um, where the hell is Arrested Development in the best comedy category? Or for that matter, any of the show’s brilliant cast, especially Jessica Walter and Will Arnett? Or The Comeback‘s Paulie G (Lance Barber)? Or Medium‘s Jake Weber?

On the movie side of things, I kind of thought Catherine Keener would be a shoo-in for a supporting actress nod for Capote, but no dice. (Instead, we get Shirley MacLaine for In Her Shoes. Seriously?) And if you’re going to nominate Matt Dillon for Crash, how can you leave out the amazing Don Cheadle?

Okay, folks, I know I’m not the only one who’s starting to work myself into an apoplectic fit. Please state your name and share your feelings in the PopWatch therapy circle. It’s time to let the healing begin.

At least they got Terrence Howard for ‘Hustle & Flow.’

Thanks a lot for putting last year’s TV nominations up first so that I thought Arrested Development was getting some love, only to find out that in reality they were completely snubbed. Nice to see the HFP acting like it doesn’t even exist before it even goes off the air.

For the love of all that is GREAT on TV, while I love the ladies on DH, seriously, spread the damn love around. DH is not the only show on TV that has a female lead. Lets try a little love for Arrested Developement’s Jessica Walter who can walk circles around Teri Hatcher in her sleep and Gilmore Girls Lauren Graham who can match snark for snark with and outdue on most days the talents of Marcia, Eva or Felicity(who will get her due for Transamerica, you go bro, I mean you go girl!)
As for the movies, I could not be happier that Brokeback Mountain is getting such recognition and I’m thrilled that so many smaller GOOD movies are being recognized. I think we’ve figured out once and for all what was the cause of Hollywood’s Slump, simply bad movies with too much publicity while good movies slip through the cracks. Maybe now people will take a chance on that indy that comes to town, if it does, and see something that stands out.

Well, I’m not too scared, since the Golden Globes is the poor man Oscars, but where in the world is Munich for Best Picture????!!!

  • miv

teri hatcher again? that’s just silliness. I am not a hater, but this season for her has been very, very weak. i think eva was deserved since she was the most comedic and as always felicity.
and wentworth miller for prison break? really? decent actor on a hot show, but jake weber from Medium or Chris Meloni from SVU are SO much more deserving of some nominations.

  • Thad

    yea, Sandra Oh!!!
Wish more of your friends would have been nominated for Grey’s Anatomy.
good to see Prison Break and History of Violence.
BOOO for the Housewives! So over them.

  • Roxanne

Crash is a movie that has stayed with me for months, but apparently the members of HFP have memory problems. I haven’t seen many of the newer films yet (some not even in wide release yet), so I can’t comment on them, but it does seem like a list that came from the short-attention-span movie-goer.
As for Arrested Development, maybe they should put bars in hospitals. It makes as much sense as this program being overlooked by this dubious group of critics. Bandwagon-jumping is fine, but how can they overlook so much? Arrested Development and its cast, Lauren Graham, Deadwood, an acceptional season of West Wing (better than the soapy Commander-in-Chief), South Park. Gotta Say, I’m a bit tired of the Desperate Hosuewives overexposure.

  • cRAIG

love that Crash was almost shut out.
and i find it laughable that people
are saying this is the performance of
    matt dillon’s life. obviously, they
    never saw drugstore cowboy…

Has anyone else noticed that when Teri Hatcher is mad on Desperate Housewives, she plays it whiney and obnoxious? And when she is sad, she plays it whiney and obnoxious. Come to think of it, Teri Hatcher plays basically every emotion as whiney and obnoxious! Is this what it takes to get nominated for a Golden Globe? And Marcia Cross is overrated. Her performance on DH has the depth of a wading pool.
Neither of these two women are NEARLY as talented Jessica Walter or Lauren Graham. Although I was expecting Gilmore Girls to be ignored(as always), I was shocked and dismayed to learn that Arrested Development was left with hardly any nominations. The show isn’t over yet!

  • CJ

I hate to be the party-pooper but in my my opinion, Will and Grace is having its best season. It’s a shame.

  • kj

i am miffed about arrested. it’s an outrageous ommission! but i am thrilled to see ‘weeds’ and mary louise parker. i hope she kicks some desperate butt.

  • Sarah

It’s disgusting that Nip/Tuck, Arrested Development, Munich, and Ralph Fiennes were snubbed.

  • PN

Something is definitely WRONG with some of these nominations, especially in the tv category, where is Six Feet Under, it had one of its best season’s ever and Deadwood should have gotten at least one. Arrested Development, as well criminally overlooked in all categories. And why is Teri hatcher still nominated, although i don’t hate her as much as some of you folks, she did not deserve a nomination this year, her performance is getting repetitive and boring.
However, Kudos and congrats to Terrence Newton Howard and Eva Longoria. I loved your performances this year.

  • Chris

Actually, it’s not all about Eva Longoria, it’s all about Brokeback Mountain, and it’s making me all warm and fuzzy. As is Parker and Perkins getting nominated for Weeds! That is the show that DH wishes it could be. Thank the TV gods that somebody noticed.

  • PN

Wait a minute..Steve Carell for The Office (umm yeah OK)…but not for “The 40 year Old Virgin” (like…..WHAT?????), anybody find that a little absurb.
