Guess who's got 2005's No. 1 CD?

She may have been tied for No. 1 in Grammy nominations announced yesterday, but it looks like Mariah Carey will have to settle for the runner-up spot (behind Fitty) when it comes to the top-selling CD of 2005. This week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly (on stands today) rounds up this year’s record industry winners and losers, and includes 2005’s top 10 selling discs through Nov. 27 (note: totals reflect 2005 sales only, even for discs released in 2004). Here’s the countdown:

1. 50 Cent, The Massacre: 4.8 million
2. Mariah Carey, The Emancipation of Mimi: 4.1 million
3. Green Day, American Idiot: 2.9 million
4. Kelly Clarkson, Breakaway: 2.8 million
5. Coldplay, X&Y: 2.4 million
6. The Black Eyed Peas, Monkey Business: 2.3 million
7. The Game, The Documentary: 2.3 million
8. Gwen Stefani, Love.Angel.Music.Baby: 2.2 million
9. Kanye West, Late Registration: 2.1 million
10. Rascal Flatts, Feels Like Today: 2 million

So, PopWatchers, any surprises on the list? Anything that gets your dander up? Then by all means, share with the class!

Is there no way to place an asterisk beside those cd’s that had big numbers from ’04, for instance, American Idiot?

Way to go Kelly Clarkson. Should have a Grammy nom for Album of the year. Hmmmmmm, where is Paul McCartney’s cd?

  • Fatima

It’s discouraging to see 50 Cent at 1 and to see The Game outsell Kanye. It could be worse.

  • Renato

Yeah, everybody knows that Paul McCarteney needs to sell more records to be considered a quality musician…

The best cd? It’s so hard – from the first half of this yer is definitely Mariah’s THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI.
The second half of the year there are a lot of very very very good cd-s:
    1. MARIAH CAREY – TEOM (Platinum Edition)
    2. Shakira – Oral Fixation Vol. 2 !!! (It’s awesome!)
    3. Celine Dion – On Ne Change Pas (2 discs – French Greatest Hits!!!)
    4. Destiny’s Child – #1’s
+ Kelly Clarkson’s Breakaway – i love it (but this cd is the newborn of past year)

Why doesn’t Kelly Clarkson have a nomination for Album of the Year again? Why isn’t Since U Been Gone nominated for Song of the Year again?

It’s great that Mariah’s CD is #2 for the year! It’s still in the top 10 and could out sell 50 Cent’s CD soon?…What a comeback, and I still play her CD! I’m hoping it wins the Grammy! We’ll see?

I don’t get the Mariah hype. She is so annoying and such a demanding diva. She is full of herself, and isn’t as amazing to look at as she seems to think. I can’t stand her music and can’t believe so many people have bought that cd.
Green Day, Coldplay and Kelly Clarkson are all way better than her.

ummm…..about that comment on the “hype” of mariah, there is no hype. She is just that good. She is so refreshing to hear this year after the crapfest that was the past years with hits from the likes of ashley simpson. Trust me, if you actually listen to her cd especially her last track Fly Like a Bird which can stir some emotion in ya, you will know why Mariah is so “big” right now. You also have to realize that she is a much more established artist than the likes of the borefest that is coldplay, and miss Clarkson who can only dream of of becoming the icon that is miss Carey. Nobody can deny her success with 16 number 1’s, probably soon to be 17 with Don’t Forget About Us. Mariah has learned to adapt to current culture and evolve with her music. That is what true legends can do.

I have no problem saying this: I HATE RAP. What was once a “novelty” in the early days of the boring late 70’s after-disco era, has been re-hashed time and again as a money maker, by those less talented. I look at it this way, if you can’t compose music, play an instrument, or REALLY sing, then you have no business being in the top 10 of anything. But then again, the industry helps this along, by giving them a movie. Hey? Is Eminem the new Vanilla Ice? (they gave him a movie too).

I admit my tastes are more dance/pop than rock and hip hop/rap, but, with few exceptions, I find the list pretty boring. My top 10 favorite CDs over the past year have been:
    Girls Aloud “Chemistry”
    Sugababes “Taller In More Ways”
Gwen Stefani “Love Angel Music Baby”
Rachel Stevens “Come and Get It”
    Madonna “Confessions On A Dancefloor”
    Kelly Clarkson “Breakaway”
    Texas “Red Book”
    Depeche Mode “Playing The Angel”
Mariah Carey “The Emancipation of Mimi”
    Bananarama “Drama”

i’m gonna speak out for the fans of mariah AND kelly. they are very different people and performers. they both convey their style wonderfully, and i don’t see why you can’t adore both. “we belong together” has had some accusations made about it’s integrity, but it’s what it’s supposed to be, a nice simple love song, i know in this time and day, if it ain’t about ho’s and dollaz it sucks. no one ever criticizes 50 cent for every song sounding the same, so forget about it. mariah is my fave artist, but hands-down “since u been gone” was THE funnest, catchiest, kick ass tune of the year. maybe someday the grammy’s will let go of their idol prejudice and honor kell bell with an album of the year nom. we can only hope. and by the way when it’s all said and done, “emancipation” will pass up 50 cent within the next couple months.

I think 50 cent sold so many copies because many people expected ‘the massacre’ to be on the same level as ‘get rich or die trying’.Its also dissapointing to see the game and 50 outsell Kanye West’s LATE REGISTRATION which is by far the best rap album of this year.Mariah deserves to be at #1

  • Drew

I am sick of rap and R&B produced crap. Thankfully we cn at least be happy that Ashley Simpson or Hillary Duff didn’t make the list. Too bad MC and 50 made it. Props to Coldplay for taking their time to put together a good album. I look forward to the day when quality music is recognized again.
