Where the heck are the Fugees?

Categories: Music

153631__fugees_lThe long-awaited new Fugees album seems to have been pushed back from its December release date to early 2006, according to the band’s website, but still, why am I not hearing the first single, ”Take It Easy,” all over the radio? It seems like they released it to little fanfare a couple months ago, and then… crickets. (At left is lead singer Lauryn Hill performing with the band earlier this month in Stockholm.)

Okay, the song’s a bit lacking in the old-school vibe that marked the ’90s Fugees material, but that should only help it get played on present-day playlists. C’mon, people, it’s the first new Fugees tune in 10 years, and it rocks, so why isn’t it as ubiquitous right now as ”Jingle Bells”?

Theories, anyone?

Well i got one theory. There new song just plain sucks. I havent been waiting ten years for take it easy! I ve been waiting ten years for the great fugees comeback!

  • Bobby

I don’t like the song either. I was shocked by how little I liked it.

If I remember correctly, their hit was a cover song. They should record another Roberta Flack song. What could they do with “The First Ever I Saw Your Face”?

  • Fatima

The song is just really really…average.
It would be okay if it weren’t for the fact its been so long. Perhaps anything would have disappointed.
The members have to start getting along or else this CD will never see the light of day. If the rest of it is like “take it easy”, that might not be a bad thing. The Fugees legacy doesn’t need that.

Little too little, little too late. They jumped the shark and the fans have responded. I love Lauryn Hill and the Fugees but they are so full of themselves and have taken so long that they have not been forgotten but dismissed.

Dude, TEN YEARS for a follow up! Isn’t the rule of pop music to strike while the iron is hot? A decade’s worth of solo albums by Wyclef and Lauren (and man was that unplugged album SO not worth the money!) have got many of us a little bit Fugeed out. Add to that, Wyclef’s ego has gotten to Bono size without Bono sized hits, and you’ve got the second album by Arrested Development or the second album by the diggable planets aka dookie on the street because it just sits there and stinks…

LOVE LAURYN HILL, but im not so much interested in the fugees… I haven’t even heard the single yet. But there’s been so many Lauryn Hill/Fugee false alarms about new material and release dates that I can’t get my hopes up until I have the actual CD in my hands.

The Fugees were terribly overrated to begin with. Their hits were either covers or sample based hits. Not to mention Take It Easy is horrific. I know a radio station programmer who says the fan reaction to that song is almost one hundred percent negative.

  • mario

i dig the new single. i think its hot, but the Fugees need to re-introduce themselves. and in the current music arena…thats gonna be hard.

  • Nicole

It’s over now that’s why. LH hasn’t made a good song since her album and Wyclef is just boring now. We don’t really need Fugees anymore

  • Peter

I think the Fugees are too full of themselves and need to give the fans what they want and not give us some half-baked song, they are awesome but they have to prove it too us again, after all these years people have forgotten the Fugees, people don’t care and they’re not giving us a reason too.

I like the Fugees and their solo projects, but they waited too long to put out their new song. I have heard Take it Easy on Sirius Satellite radio(free plug there) and it really is average; I was disappointed.

  • bill

yeah the song is really sux bad. they waited way too long for this album. Alot of young folks dont even know whow they are now. We dont care. Now lets get Guns N Roses out with a new album. Now that will rock. Now I have go to meet alot of hot single chicks on http://www.singlesPalace.com, free to join and free to use to meet singles on.

Lauryn ripped it. Wyclef and Pras sucked on top of a wacke d beat.

How can you guys say this? To all the so called “fans” i can only say f*ck y`all!!! I`m a real fan and i can wait for if nessesary another 10 years! Take it easy isn`t so bad,as a matter or fact it rocs! You say that it`s been a long time,so what? I still think that they bring some really good music, and that this is just a beginning! You can`t judge the Fugees because of one song. And who sad that Clef is boring? He`s probably the most potent hip-hop artist because he is producer/rhymer/remixer/even an actor and so on,and Lauryn and Pras (don`t try to say something bad about him because i`ve read so many bull*hit about him already!) were down simply because of a strain and lack of self concense, maybe because they weren`t strong persons back then! And if somebody tells me that Fugees suck today than i simply ask you people:name me one normal rap group today…ok there`s maybe a couple but just to remind y`all that todays hip-hop,should i say 90% is wack as my a*s so plase stop talking nonsence and simply wait for this new release,ok?

If you want to hear a Fugge type song, you gotta hear Pras’ latest hit I still haven’t found what I’m looking for. He’s the least known member of the crew, but believe it or not he was the executive producer of THE SCORE and can provide good music. He was my favorite fugee and I loved his deep voice flow on da album. You can hear the song and see the video on

Just because your a big fan of the fugees doesnt mean you have to like everything they put out, you can still have an opinion of their musc. I have been a huge fan of the fugees since ‘blunted and have been waiting for the single for ages and i am a little dissappointed with it as a first single after a long-awaited reuninion. also, this isnt just the beginning coz lauryn said they were only reuniting so they could “close the book properly”, so this is the end. If you have watched the tour you’ll notince that pras hasnt even been giving his all on stage, he doesnt even bother to do his verse sometimes and thats disrespect. another thing, we werent judging the fugees by this one song, we were judging the song. and people who wrote bad comments bout the fugees prob didnt like them since the beginning. so as a fan i do hope the fugees album does go off when it does finally get released but judging from the first single i’m not getting my hopes up.
ps. that new pras song ‘havnt found’ aint even that good. its another cover. he just spits a couple of versus while a woman sings the original

  • Ruttiger

Lauryn Hill is the only talented person in the Fugees. It wasnt until after their last album that we all realized what a fraud wyclef is. He has zero credibility in the hip hop community. Their new single is definitely a flop.

  • rh

I think Ms. Hill is on drugs

  • Yemi

I’m so disappointed and i didnt even hear take it easy – the silent is enough of a signal they flopped in the Us and didn’t even make it to the UK. cries.. Killing me softly’s playing right now.. what happened to the 90’s? You feel fun, intelligence and a genuine bond on the score, you could play an album front to back on the score. They just waited to long and didn’t bring anything to the table this time. I agree they could be dismissed but I’m still hoping. They just need to bring back the soulful and warm samples, and some of that grown up rap metas and similitudes. and the skits “You think i open up a chinese restaurant in the middle of the hood, and don’t know whats up? ” They need some fun knocked back into their life..
