Oooo-wee! Hot doctors!

15333__er_lThe upcoming Sept. 23 issue of Entertainment Weekly features Gillian Flynn’s countdown of the 10 Best Medical Shows Ever. In no particular order, here are the shows that made the cut:

St. Elsewhere
ER (left)
Chicago Hope
Ben Casey
China Beach
Quincy, M.E.

You might not recognize Bodies, a critically acclaimed drama starring Max Beesley (who apparently survived the shame of Mariah Carey’s Glitter), because it hasn’t aired stateside yet — look for its premiere Sept. 29 on BBC America. And as for the short-lived Wonderland, its creative team included the guys behind Why Do Men Have Nipples?

Any-hoo, did our TV critic get it right? Do you think any of her favorites are overrated? And more importantly, are there any great shows she forgot? Holla back!

    What about Nip/Tuck????

Looking at your list, I’m quite pleased that you included China Beach on your favorite list of medical shows. It was so underrated during its run. John Wells went on to work on your favorite medical drama ER. I remember I was still in high school when it aired and the thought of Dana Delaney in her combat greens always really excited me. She was definitely the talk of all my neighborhood friends in high school. Does anyone know if its available on DVD?

Really glad “Scrubs” made the list. But what about “House”? That show is awesome!

  • Fiscus

As good as E.R. was (not is …) St. Elsewhere set the standard for hospital drama. Great cast, great storylines, and, of course, Veronica Hamel in a bubble bath …

M*A*S*H is the best television show of all time, so it deserves the honor, but House has grown into a more compelling show than Chicago Hope ever was.

  • Ann Thrope

I hate all medical shows, especially ones that have the gall to hire George Clooney.

E.R. is now and has always been basically St. Elsewhere on crack. Everything ER has done, except dropping helicopters on doctors, St. Elsewhere did better. Besides St. Elsewhere, M*A*S*H* ranks a close second. Nip/Tuck doesn’t qualify since it’s not set in a hospital and is basically a soap and House, as good as it is, is too new to be considered for classic status.

Does anyone remember Clooney’s original doctoring show called “E/R”? A comedy — I seem to remember it fondly, as silly as it was.

    Grey’s Anatomy anyone???

  • Ceballos

Scrubs is the funniest show on TV…has been for a couple of years. And yeah, Laura’s right, even though it’s new “House” should be on there. Hugh Laurie is the man!

  • ABC

MASH is a classic. I like Grey’s Anatomy. ER needs to just go away already.

i used to live for ER. dr. ross! swoon…
now i steer clear of the hospital dramas…it’s scrubs or nothing for me.

When Fiscus mentions “Veronica Hamel in a bubble bath” I think he/she is confusing St. Elsewhere with Hill Street Blues. does not show Hamel as ever having been on St. Elsewhere, but as a devoted “Blues” fan I can attenst to her numerous bath scenes on that show…

I must admit ER is not as good as is use to be, but it is still the best. I love every scene Goran Visnic is in.
