Alfred Hitchcock's 'Rear Window' gets a new view

“Drama is life with the dull bits cut out,” Alfred Hitchcock once puffed. Filmmaker Jeff Desom took it upon himself to cut out some bits from Hitch’s voyeuristic 1954 masterpiece, Rear Window, and rearrange them to create a three-minute, single-shot, full-FOV version of the classic film. It doesn’t make the film more dramatic (probably because there was nothing dull to begin with), but it’s still a sight to behold. Watch Miss Torso dance, the Songwriter compose, and Raymond Burr possibly murder his wife, all from the chair-ridden perspective of Jimmy Stewart’s L. B. Jeffries and set to some jazzed-up Brahms.

Technically speaking, it’s impressively seamless, but it also makes you realize how good Hitchcock was at mapping out space in his films. If the courtyard’s geography weren’t so meticulously and intuitively captured, a project like this probably wouldn’t have been possible. Plus, I’m sure the good Master would approve of Desom’s digital stitchwork: After all, he tried to shoot Rope as one long continuous take, hampered only by the 10 cuts needed to switch the camera’s film magazine. Actually, maybe that could be Desom’s next project… READ FULL STORY

Larry King launches Internet TV network

Larry King will pick back up the mic, snap his suspenders in place, and dust off his famous interviewing skills to co-found an Internet television network financed by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim Helú. The new network will be called Ora.TV and will broadcast throughout the United States and Latin America.

King will host a program similar to his former CNN talk show Larry King Live because, as he told the New York Times, “I run into people everyday who tell me they miss my show. And a lot of times I miss it too.” He said his wife Shawn will likely be involved in the network as a style or celebrity host. The Kings’ programs are among a number of shows in development, and more will be announced in coming months. According to a release sent out today, “Ora is in discussions with other on-air personalities to join King in creating a unique and compelling roster of talent and programming.” READ FULL STORY

You knew it was coming: Angelina Jolie's leg launches Twitter feed, online memes aplenty

A star is born! It’s not Oscar-winning Descendants screenwriter Jim Rash, but he was the prophet who ushered in the latest (and leggiest) meme of 2012. The Community star was the first to pay homage to fellow nominee Angelina Jolie, who took no small amount of delight in showing off her exposed right gam (thanks to a velvet Atelier Versace gown) at last night’s 84th Annual Academy Awards. Following Rash’s lead, slew of Inter-nutters have joined the chorus of approval and/or mockery for Jolie’s sartorial statement. READ FULL STORY

Bates, please! Seven 'Downton Abbey'-inspired Tumblrs that will delight or enrage you

For what it’s worth, the Internet is filled with productive people who actually want to help change the world. Unfortunately, those people are not the ones who made these seven Tumblr blogs, all inspired by the hit PBS series Downton Abbey.

Have a look at these Downton-inspired memes (a.k.a.: a disturbingly enjoyable joke that is employed repeatedly until the humor of it is clobbered into the ground), which will either contribute to your love of the show, or enrage you with their blatant disregard for the Downton canon.  READ FULL STORY

'The Dark Knight Rises,' Johnny Depp, and 'Lost' top IMDb's top-searched lists

It seems like some folks have found a way to pass the time until movie-event The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters on July 20: Check the IMDb page for it obsessively.  (Okay, phew, Anne Hathaway is still there.)

Christopher Nolan’s final installment of his Batman saga has topped IMDb.com‘s most-viewed list for Anticipated In-Production Movies. While it’s certainly no big surprise that that particular film tops that list (I wonder how many visitors went to the Quotes section to figure out what Bane is saying), it is somewhat jarring to see other biggies like The Hunger Games and Prometheus being out-searched by the likes of G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Battleship. (Does that mean it will be — forgive me — a hit?)

Rachel Bilson raps; talks 'O.C.' in new NSFW video: Watch here!

Summer Roberts is back (up on the track again)!

Rachel Bilson got in on the Funny or Die viral vid fun today, shooting a rap video “Call Me Doctor” with her Hart of Dixie co-stars Scott Porter and Wilson Bethel that gives the Natalie Portman SNL rap a run for its shockingly raunchy money. Princess Sparkles would not approve.

Bilson goes full attitude in the clip with ryhmes like “critics talking shit about my acting/ nice chick shtick ain’t happenin'” and  an intro that directly confronts some of the criticism against the show: “A real doctor wouldn’t dress like me? Act like me? Look like me?…Aw, hell no!”

She even gets in on the behind-the-scenes O.C. dish, saying “Peaced out of ‘The O.C.’, Ben and Brody, deuces!/ Did a couple movies, drank a couple juices!/ Still they comin’ at me, like ‘Where ya been?’/ You should be askin’ Mischa Barton.”

My favorite part may be when she takes on the “haters” (of course!) who have mentioned that Bilson as a believable doctor may be a bit of a stretch. She has got two words for you: “Doogie Howser.”

Be sure to check out 1:49, when Bilson takes the intensity to a whole new level. Watch your back throne, Jay-Z.

Listen to Bilson’s beats below:  READ FULL STORY

Wikipedia to go dark on Wednesday for web blackout in response to SOPA, PIPA

If you need to find something on Wikipedia, you’d better do it today. Beginning Wednesday, the free online encyclopedia behemoth, along with websites such as Reddit and Boing Boing will go dark to protest two Congressional bills, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA.)

According to The New York Times, the controversial bills “have attracted fierce opposition from many corners of the technology industry. Opponents say several of the provisions in the legislation, including those that may force search engines and Internet service providers to block access to Web sites that offer or link to copyrighted material, would stifle innovation, enable censorship, and tamper with the livelihood of businesses on the Internet.”
