Under-appreciated Entertainer of the Year is...Thomas Gibson of 'Criminal Minds'!

Thomas-GibsonImage Credit: CBS/LandovQuick! What do American Idol graduate Allison Iraheta, So You Think You Can Dance host Cat Deeley, Sons of Anarchy star Katey Sagal, The Vampire Diaries hottie Paul Wesley, Fringe scene-stealer John Noble, and House sidekick Robert Sean Leonard have in common? Aside from the fact that their copious talents don’t get as much recognition as they should, the sextet of entertainers all share the distinction of having been steamrolled by Thomas Gibson, star of CBS’ chilling procedural Criminal Minds, in EW.com’s Under-appreciated Entertainer of the Year bracket tournament.

Yes, folks, after a month of intense voting, fanbase lobbying, and crushed dreams, Gibson stands alone at the end of a competition that began with 64 players under-appreciated by the world, but beloved among EW readers. READ FULL STORY

Under-appreciated Entertainer of the Year: The final four!

As November comes to a close, so does EW.com’s first Under-appreciated Entertainer of the Year Bracket Game. We’re down to the final four, each of whom is already a winner — they’ve been voted tops in their genre. The overall title, however, is the one that comes with bragging rights, so now is when they need your votes most. Who will you push into the finals?

Underappreciated-Entertainers-16AImage Credit: LeAnn Mueller; Frank Masi; Frank Micelotta/Fox; Michael Yarish/CBSThe first semifinal matchup pits music winner Allison Iraheta against movies’ Karl Urban. Urban, who held his own opposite Bruce Willis in RED, fought his way to this round with narrow victories over the likes of Stanley Tucci (Easy A) and Sam Rockwell (Iron Man 2) — impressive. Iraheta, who took out fellow American Idol alum Elliott Yamin and Brandon Flowers on her way to the final four, finally got the respect someone who can sing like this (and this) live deserves. Too bad it didn’t come from her record label, Jive, who parted ways with her last fall as she was opening for Adam Lambert.

The second semifinal matchup finds So You Think You Can Dance‘s Cat Deeley taking on Criminal Minds’ Thomas Gibson. You may be surprised to see Gibson emerge the scripted TV victor: his fans not only outvoted those of The Vampire Diaries‘ Paul Wesley, the same ones who mobilized to help Ian Somerhalder defeat Robert Pattinson for the EW.com title of Sexiest Beast last summer, but also anyone still fuming that Sons of Anarchy‘s Katey Sagal was snubbed by Emmy voters this year. But let’s not forget that Criminal Minds is a Top 10 show, averaging 16 million viewers in its sixth season. Season-to-date, it’s the No. 1 show on Wednesday (bettering Modern Family head-to-head in total viewers). It’s also routinely among the Top 10 most DVR’d shows, which means those who watch it are loyal. The delightful Deeley earning the reality-TV title, on the other hand, isn’t a huge surprise: Each year, EW.com readers lament the fact that she still has yet to nab an Emmy nomination for reality host when she’s so deserving (she cares about the contestants, she doesn’t make the show about her or the judges, and she dresses better than Heidi Klum).

In the scripted TV bracket, we have two actors who have shed their sitcom personas and embraced more strictly dramatic roles: Thomas Gibson on Criminal Minds and Katey Sagal on Sons of Anarchy. (Though she still makes me laugh as the voice of Leela on Futurama.) On the reality side, it’s hostess with the mostess Cat Deeley taking on everyone’s favorite Runway runner-up Mondo Guerra. If they tie, can Mondo design Cat something awesome to wear on So You Think You Can Dance? Here’s hoping. READ FULL STORY

Filo/CBS; LifetimeWith today being Thanksgiving Eve, our minds are on the poultry heaps, canned sauce slices, and awkward family conversations that await us over the long weekend. Under-appreciated Entertainer of the Year: Sweet Sixteen time: Can Karl Urban shock the world? Is Cat Deeley invincible?

Our Under-appreciated Entertainer of the Year game has now entered the third round, the so-called Sweet Sixteen in bracket parlance, and in college basketball, it’s often where Cinderallas finally turn into pumpkins. Gone are the merely mildly Under-appreciated, like the Dancing With the Stars Band and movie villain du jour Mark Strong. The competition from here on in will be fierce. For the most part, our seeding committee did an excellent job, but all eyes — okay, some eyes — are on No. 16-seed Karl Urban (Red), who has already upset No.1 Pete Postlethwaite and No. 9 Rebecca Hall. Does he have the juice to keep it going against fellow underdog Stanley Tucci, a 13-seed? Or will Tucci benefit from the imminent wave of Burlesque buzz and send Urban packing? Thomas Gibson (Criminal Minds) edged John Noble (Fringe) in the second round by only 1.2 points, so he has his work cut out for him this time, facing Paul Wesley. The Vampire Diaries star has benefited from a cadre of rabid online support, and Gibson will need every last Chicago Hope and Dharma & Greg fan to log-in to keep his momentum going.

Under-appreciated Entertainer of the Year: Funnyladies Busy Philipps and Yvette Nicole Brown face off. Plus: 'American Idol' finalist battle!

EW’s Under-appreciated Entertainer … of … the … Year … is… Psych! No, not the TV show. Psych as in, do you really think I’d reveal the winner Ryan Seacrest-style now? After all, we’re only in round two of our Under-appreciated Entertainer of the Year bracket game, which seeks to reward the unsung heroes of television, film, music, and reality TV. And, speaking of Seacrest, today’s round pits American Idol season 8 finalist Allison Iraheta against Idol season 5 finalist Elliott Yamin. The latter might seem to have the advantage, finishing in third place on the televised singing competition while Iraheta finished fourth, but I have a feeling EW’s Michael Slezak and other Idoloonies will cry, baby, if Iraheta doesn’t bag the win. The movies category boasts another tough battle: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World‘s Kieran Culkin vs. the world Iron Man 2‘s Sam Rockwell. When a graphic novel character takes on a comic book character, who reigns supreme?

Kerry Hayes; Industrial Light & Magic/Marvel; LeAnn Mueller

Over in TV, it’s all about the sassy scene-stealers: Cougar Town‘s Busy Philipps and Community‘s Yvette Nicole Brown will battle it out for the title — certainly Philipps’ ability to play Penny Can on a bottle of wine (or three) gives her an edge? (Not if Brown’s Twitter followers have anything to say about it.) And, finally, in the reality TV category, it’s the Chenbot vs. the bangs: Big Brother‘s Julie Chen fights The Rachel Zoe Project‘s Rodger Berman to see who will advance to round three. But first… you most vote! Click the jump to choose your favorite Under-Appreciated Entertainer of the Year, and click here to see all 64 contenders competing for the title!

Under-appreciated Entertainer of the Year: Brandon Flowers? Katey Sagal? Mondo?

Round 2 of our Under-appreciated Entertainer of the Year bracket game continues! Up today: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World‘s Mary Elizabeth Winstead vs. Jon Anderson from The Crazies in the movies category, and Killers frontman-turned-solo artist Brandon Flowers vs. Ray LaMontagne in music. Don’t know their songs? Vote based on hair! No. Listen to the music.

In the TV categories, it’s Sons of Anarchy‘s Emmy-snubbed Katey Sagal vs. Parenthood‘s Peter Krause, who’ll always be Nate Fisher — preferably in his sweat-stained all-black jogging uniform! — to me. Meanwhile, Project Runway runner-up Mondo Guerra, who admittedly may have only been under-appreciated by Nina Garrrrrrcia and Top Ameh-wican Design-uh Michael Kors, goes up against The Real Housewives of Atlanta‘s Kandi Burruss. Those last two should probably just start their own show. Look behind her. It’s a wacky pattern!!!

Under-appreciated Entertainer of the Year: Paul Wesley? Stanley Tucci? Tom Bergeron?

Things are starting to get a little hairy in Round 2 of our Under-appreciated Entertainer of the Year bracket game. Sure, you may be emotionally invested in your Round 1 choices, but how do you choose between a (fictional) husband and wife? A vampire and a (sometimes) vampire hunter? No one said it was easy, PopWatchers, but alas, it must be done.

Underappreciated-Entertainers-10AImage Credit: Monae: Jiro Schneider; Adam Taylor (2)

Let’s begin with movies, where the parental duo of Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci (Easy A) go head-to-head, making this a very difficult decision for a one Ms. Emma Stone. Both have been nominated — and overlooked — by Academy Award voters in the past, but now they have a chance to win their very own Prize To Be Determined Later here at PopWatch. In music, it’s between two young ladies rocking daring ‘dos, as newbies Janelle Monáe and VV Brown, whose debut albums you should have been listening to, take the center ring.

In a TV matchup that may divide friends, families, and even countries, The Vampire DiariesPaul Wesley battles Supernatural hunk Jared Padalecki for the title of most underrated brooding CW star. Over in the land of reality television, are you partial to Wipeout host John Henson and his “big balls”? Or, in a sea of sequins and sparkles, is Tom Bergeron the true hidden gem of Dancing With the Stars?

Under-appreciated Entertainer of the Year: John Noble? Cat Deeley? Robyn? Round 2 is underway!

Let’s face it: Maybe 50 percent of those who vote in this latest round of EW’s Under-appreciated Entertainer of the Year will actually read this paragraph. And why would you? Looking at the photos of today’s intense matchups is quite enough to make your blood boil without me egging you on — but I’m going to do it anyway.

underappreciated-performers-10AImage Credit: Liane Hentscher/Fox; Michael Yarish/CBS; Frank Micelotta/Fox; ABC

First up, in our TV race, we have John Noble facing off in this world and on The Other Side against Thomas Gibson, following the Criminal Minds actor’s narrow win over House‘s Robert Sean Leonard (54.5 percent against 45.5 percent). And in reality TV, Cat Deeley stands very likely to wipe the dance floor with broken-hearted Bachelorette castoff Chris Lambton after she won her tough round 1 match-up against The Harold Wheeler Ensemble of Dancing With the Stars by more than 50 percent. (Chris won his by a little more than 49 percent, but it was an easy win. He was up against Jersey Shore‘s Angelina — no one likes her.)

In the movies category, Red‘s Karl Urban will face off against The Town’s Rebecca Hall. And over in music, it’s a battle of the single-named females as Sia attempts to show Robyn not love, but defeat. Submit your votes after the jump.
