Ashton Kutcher's second 'Two and a Half Men' episode: Do we still care?

Charlie is already dead. Ashton Kutcher’s Walden Schmidt has already bought his house. Heck, we’ve already met Ashton Kutcher’s Walden Schmidt’s nether regions — in fact, a grand total of 27.7 million viewers met his nether regions. Of course, huge ratings for Two and a Half Men‘s ninth season premiere were expected — following Charlie Sheen’s firing and subsequent media implosion, curiosity drove many to tune into CBS to see what would come of Charlie Harper and his youthful replacement. But now that we’ve gotten answers — and an opportunity to snap judge Kutcher in the role as hapless and hopelessly-in-love billionaire Walden — will TV viewers continue to tune in? Despite record-ratings for his old show, is Charlie Sheen still winning?

If CBS was worried yesterday about the future of Two and Half Men post-Charlie Sheen, they are breathing easily today. A huge audience of 27.7 million tuned in to see Ashton Kutcher make his celebrated debut on the show’s season 9 premiere last night. But as EW’s Ken Tucker points out, Sheen’s presence still dominated the proceedings — and it wasn’t just because of his character’s demise.

Ridicule Sheen, ridicule Two and a Half Men, ridicule its popularity, but you can’t overlook the role of Sheen’s innate Sheenism in making the show a ratings force. Though Kutcher wields his own supersized off-screen persona and brings his own brand of humor, it remains to be seen whether he can replicate the easy on-screen chemistry with Jon Cryer and Angus T.  Jones that made the show successful. Charlie Sheen sets Twitter ablaze. It's like March all over again!

During last night’s pushing-the-boundaries-of-taste Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen, comedienne Amy Schumer delivered a low-blow at the man of the hour, as well as his Two and a Half Men replacement Ashton Kutcher: “You’re just like Bruce Willis — you were big in the ’80s and now your old slot’s being filled with Ashton Kutcher,” she joked.

But Schumer wasn’t the only one to hit Kutcher where it hurt on Monday night. Even his beloved Twitterverse seemed to have turned their back on him, when the social networking website lit up with talk of Sheen and his harsh roast. But Sheen got the last laugh: According to Gigaom.com, social media monitoring group Visible Technologies found that the Charlie Sheen roast, and talk of all things about the tiger blood-infused warlock, garnered upwards of 400,000 tweets, while Kutcher’s debut on Two and a Half Men earned only around 150,000. Fall TV Mondays: What to watch? What to DVR?

There are a lot of things that stress me out in life: what to eat for lunch, what to wear to work, what to do after work…you know, decisions in general. But few things fill me with more anxiety than figuring out what to watch on TV during the fall season. From new and returning scripted dramas and comedies to so-bad-it’s-good reality shows, each night poses a fresh dilemma between what to tune into live versus what to save for the DVR (or for that matter, skip all together).

I’m sure I’m not the only one going through this. So, this season PopWatch readers, I say we  save ourselves the agony of indecision by declaring our allegiances early on. Everyday this week, I’m going to list the shows I plan to watch live, and record on my DVR, for this season’s coveted 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. slot. Then it’s your turn to share your picks. Tonight’s Late Show with David Letterman featured a “Top 10 Reasons To Watch the New Season of Two and a Half Men” list presented by new star Ashton Kutcher alongside series originals Jon Cryer and Angus T. Jones. Before the stars’ appearance, Letterman took the opportunity to let loose on He Who Shall Be Named Over and Over and Over Again. ”This [season premiere] is going to be huge thanks to Charlie Sheen,” Letterman snarked. “I mean, he did all the heavy lifting on this one, boy.” Watch the video after the jump. Ashton Kutcher's character to be suicidal on 'Two and a Half Men' -- funny!

Ashton Kutcher dropped by Late Show with David Letterman Wednesday night (clip embedded below) and did his best not to reveal anything about his Two and a Half Men character, Walden Schmidt, a billionaire Internet entrepreneur going through a nasty divorce who ends up moving in with Alan (Jon Cryer) and Jake (Angus T. Jones). But David Letterman wouldn’t let him off the hook. He badgered him to reveal how Charlie Sheen’s character dies, and when Kutcher finally pleaded the fifth saying he didn’t know because he wasn’t in the scene, Letterman called bull. I hate it when actors try to use that line, too. Even if the scene is so secretive it’s not in everyone’s script, that’s something you hear about — especially when it’s a character you’re replacing and you’re a movie star coming back to sitcoms and need to know the show is funny.

Of course that’s a spoiler Kutcher shouldn’t reveal, but then come prepared with jokes to deflect from the fact that you’re not saying anything real. Letterman’s face after Kutcher responded with a vague, “I show up when Jon Cryer’s character needs me the most” when asked to describe how Walden enters the picture was classic. “Here’s my fear, next week you’ll go on Leno and spill your guts,” Dave said. Guilt does sometimes work: “I’m very heartbroken over this breakup that’s taken place….I may, in some way, shape, or form, be tryin’ to kill myself,” he finally coughed up. “I’m no genius, but what better way to kick off a new season of a sitcom than with a suicide,” Letterman cracked. “You already killed Charlie. Jon Cryer talks Charlie Sheen on 'Letterman': 'None of us wanted to continue with the show if we felt like it was hurting him'

Jon Cryer opened up to David Letterman last night about the behind-the-scenes drama surrounding Charlie Sheen’s exit from Two and a Half Men and new co-star Ashton Kutcher. Simultaneously, he reminded us that despite everything that’s happened in the past year, he’s still a classy guy.

Cryer, who has remained pretty mum about the situation (sans his hilarious rebuttal to being called “a troll” by Sheen), was candid about the time when he believed he was out of a job because of Sheen. “None of us wanted to continue with the show if we felt like it was hurting him. And there was a point at which everybody felt like, ‘There is no control here.’”

But not soon after, he said, CBS had quickly assembled a plan B: Bring on Ashton Kutcher. He joked, however, he remains wary of his new co-star. On the way to the network’s Upfronts presentation, held last month in New York, “Ashton came on the plane and said, ‘You know what I love about private jets? You can bring knives on board.’”

'Two and a Half Men' not submitted for Outstanding Comedy Emmy consideration: Should it have been?

Sources have confirmed that CBS’ sitcom Two and a Half Men will not be submitted in the Outstanding Comedy category for the upcoming Emmy Awards, a decision made by producing studio Warner Bros. Television. That may not be that much of a shocking news bulletin, considering that star Charlie Sheen put the show through the ringer earlier this year, before he was fired and replaced by Ashton Kutcher.
