Incredible Google Doodle celebrates Saul Bass -- VIDEO

Google-doodle.jpg

Ready to feel an ominous chill in the air while simultaneously being incredibly impressed?

Today’s Google Doodle celebrates Saul Bass, the artist responsible for some of the most iconic motion-picture title sequences of all time, including the openers from The Man With the Golden Arm, North by Northwest, and Psycho.

Google’s homepage Doodle today, on what would have been Bass’ 93 birthday (he passed away in 1996), starts with disjointed text bars that spell out ‘Google’ as a nod to Psycho. When viewers click play they are taken through a Google-ized spin on some of Bass’ most famous works: the addict’s arm from The Man With the Golden Arm, the eye from Vertigo, the streets of New York from West Side Story, and many others.

Check out the full 81-second reel below, set to Dave Brubeck’s classic “Unsquare Dance.” Can you name all the movie references? READ FULL STORY

Ben Affleck takes poverty vow: Eat on $1.50 a day

Newly-anointed World’s Most Beautiful Woman Gwyneth Paltrow has famously dismissed the plebs who criticize her extravagant lifestyle. “F— the haters!” she told Elle UK in 2009. “I am who I am. I can’t pretend to be somebody who makes $25,000 a year.”

But apparently, the same isn’t true for Paltrow’s old flame Ben Affleck. The Oscar-winning director recently signed on to participate in the Global Poverty Project’s Live Below the Line, a campaign that challenges average (and above-average) people to live on just $1.50 a day for five days. The initiative is meant to simulate what it’s like for the 1.4 billion people worldwide who live in extreme poverty. Getting by on that pittance every day would actually mean spending just $547.5 per year — which makes $25,000 look like a pretty princely sum.

Kissing covers: Time magazine takes on marriage equality

time-magazine-cover.jpg

Time magazine’s latest cover is unsurprisingly about the current Supreme Court cases revolving around marriage equality – but the provocative pictures are generating some controversy of their own.

Buzzfeed post notes, “One of Time‘s two new cover photos declaring “gay marriage already won” looks like a wedding kiss. The other looks more like a makeout session,” but while the in-your-face pictures are sure to generate some comments, it wasn’t the point of what the publication was striving for. READ FULL STORY

Helen Mirren reminds Sam Mendes that women direct movies, too -- VIDEO

Helen Mirren was honored with the “Legend” award at the Empire Awards over the weekend, and she quickly demonstrated why. In a speech that also discussed her career high points and her deep appreciation for her long career, the Oscar-winner called out Skyfall director Sam Mendes, who had won the “Inspiration” award earlier in the evening, for demonstrating how “bloke-y” her industry has traditionally been.

In Mendes’ speech, he thanked directors who had inspired him, including Paul Thomas Anderson, François Truffaut, Martin Scorsese and Ingmar Bergman, according to U.K. paper The Guardian. When Mirren took the stage, she used his speech as the starting point to discuss her dismay that Mendes didn’t cite any women (although Mirren was careful to emphasize that she was not criticizing Mendes personally). Mirren stated her hope that when “The next Sam gets up and makes his, or hopefully her, speech, there will be two or three or four or five women’s names there. There are some wonderful, wonderful female directors coming up, many of them are British and it’s so exciting to see that. Go girls!”

Cue rapturous audience applause.

Watch video of Mirren’s speech below (The talk about women starts at 2:48): READ FULL STORY

'Saturday Night Live' recap: Welcome to the Five-Timers Club, Justin Timberlake!

You guys, Justin Timberlake is onto us. Here’s how this season’s most highly anticipated SNL host began his monologue last night: “There are so many exciting things about hosting five times. You get to see old friends. You get to try new things. You get to inevitably let everyone down thanks to overly high expectations — thanks, Internet!”

But unlike poor Jennifer Lawrence, Timberlake didn’t fall victim to the perils of fervent anticipation. His show was a thrilling, joyous, cameo-stuffed affair that easily ranks among this season’s best, second only perhaps to Martin Short’s Christmas episode — even though Timberlake and SNL both lost a good amount of momentum after Weekend Update, where the show’s weakest sketches are traditionally stuffed.

'Mad Men': Don Draper is always attractive, and Harry... well -- PHOTOS

Is Mad Men becoming That 70s Show?

It certainly seems that way based on some photos snapped this week from the set of the sixth season of the drama, which will premiere April 7 on AMC. We already know that Don and Megan will apparently be visiting Hawaii. Now it also appears Roger, Don and Harry will be in a car together, all at the same time, at some point this season. What could it all mean?

This is what happens when you don’t announce anything about the show, Matthew Weiner. We’re forced to speculate on the smallest details. Will Sterling Cooper Draper (Pryce?) land an ascot account this season? Will Don and Roger ever change their look? (Nope!) Are you wondering how much longer you can possibly wait without seeing a trailer that isn’t just pictures and the word “affair”?

Check out another photo below that shows viewers Harry is fully embracing the new era: READ FULL STORY

Jamie Lee Curtis blasts Seth MacFarlane's Oscar song

Jamie Lee Curtis is no fan of Seth MacFarlane.

The actress wrote an op-ed for Huffington Post over the weekend, “And the Oscar Goes to… Hell,” where she took MacFarlane to task for the misogyny apparent in his Oscar hosting gig, particularly his opening number, “We Saw Your Boobs.”

“I was offended last week. As an Academy member, as the child of former Academy members and as a woman, I expected more from the best that the movie business has to offer,” she wrote. “The Oscars are about honoring art and artists. It is not supposed to be a cheesy vaudeville show…. I am an actress who has bared her breasts in films to satisfy the requirement of the role I was asked to do — lucky to do, for in my case, those films were significant in my career. I didn’t like doing it. I didn’t ask if I could do them topless. I did what was asked of me for the part I was playing. Mostly asked by men.” READ FULL STORY

'Modern Family' stars get stuck on an elevator

Screen Shot 2013-03-02 at 10.55.24 AM

This will probably turn out to be the best and worst press release ever for the Kansas City Sheraton. TV boyfriends Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, along with Jesse’s TV sister, Julie Bowen, documented their 45-minute holdup in the hotel’s elevator. The Modern Family actors were on their way to headline a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City (Stonestreet’s hometown). READ FULL STORY
