'Vampire Diaries' anniversary: What's been your favorite twist?

vampire-diaries.jpg

Three years ago today, Sept. 10, 2009, The Vampire Diaries debuted on The CW. To celebrate, exec producer Julie Plec tweeted her favorite episodes (in order of airdate) Sunday night. Check out her picks here. She named 17 episodes, with season 3′s “The Reckoning” — when Klaus finally succeeds in forcing Stefan to turn off his humanity on Senior Prank Night — as possibly her all-time favorite.

Reading her list, filled with general epicness and top tissue moments (“Plan B,” “The Descent,” “Ghost World”), I was surprised that I reacted so strongly to Plec’s mention of season 2 episode “Klaus.” As Plec wrote, “[N]ever was an episode full of exposition so well-executed. And because the Sun and Moon Curse was fake.” I still remember how shocked I was when Elijah (Daniel Gillies) said that. Everything we thought we knew was wrong.

In honor of the show’s anniversary, name your favorite twist. The show has about 10 each episode, so there are plenty to choose from!

It’s September, which means it’s once again time for the EWwys, EW.com’s annual awards honoring the shows, actors, and actresses that should’ve been nominated for an Emmy but weren’t. This year’s nominees are a combination of those who made EW critic Ken Tucker’s Emmy wish list and those who readers felt were most grievously snubbed when the Emmy nominations were announced in July. Check out the nominees in the five EWwy Comedy categories and vote for your favorites hereClick through the nominees in the five EWwy Drama categories and cast your votes here. Polls will remain open through Sept. 13. Winners will be announced Sept. 14. There are trophies involved, to which two-time EWwy winner Courteney Cox can attest: READ FULL STORY »

Olympics: Nina Dobrev is as obsessed with gymnastics and Gabby Douglas as you are (maybe more)

After hearing that 16-year-old U.S. gymnast Gabby Douglas is a huge fan of their show, the cast of The Vampire Diaries made her a video congratulating her on her team and individual all-around golds and wishing her and her teammate, Aly Raisman, good luck in today’s event finals. Watch it below. (No spoilers in the comments, please!)

Nina Dobrev, a former artistic and rhythmic gymnast, was behind the group effort. “Forget sleep. It’s all about the Olympics right now. I’m obsessed. Like, it’s actually a problem. They’re starting to tell me I’m looking tired on set, and it’s because I’m up until, like, two in the morning watching the Olympics and going to work at 5 a.m.,” Dobrev told EW earlier today. “I used to be a gymnast, and I competed internationally, so it’s my favorite time. I even bought a 3D TV so that I could watch them in 3D. When I found out that Gabby liked the show, I was incredibly excited and really happy to make the video. And now we follow each other on Twitter, so we’ve been direct messaging. The 16-year-old in me wishes that I was up there with them. So I’m just so happy for her success. And she’s so cute. She has the most amazing smile.”  READ FULL STORY »

Ian Somerhalder puts himself on the auction block for charity

ian-somerhalder

There’s a hoard of Vampire Diaries loyals in the world who would love to have lunch with Ian Somerhalder, and now, here’s their chance. The bonus? It’s for a very good cause.

Charitybuzz is hosting an auction that will award the highest bidder a chance to have lunch with the Vampire Diaries star in Atlanta. (Place your bid here.) All proceeds from the auction will benefit the Ian Somerhalder Foundation, and specifically go toward the organization’s plans to open up an animal sanctuary.

“A big component of ISF is not just habitat or species conservation, it’s animal protection and youth education,” the actor tells EW exclusively. “There are too many animals that are abused, mistreated, and abandoned. They’ve been ostracized, they have behavioral issues, and they’re starving. It’s just unbelievable what we’ve done to the animals, and I think that’s why this is so important.” READ FULL STORY »

Nina Dobrev is now Conan O'Brien's favorite guest EVER. See why!

If you only watch two minutes of The Vampire Diaries‘ star Nina Dobrev’s interview with Conan O’Brien from Wednesday, it needs to be the clip below. Conan asks her to show him a yoga move, and she uses him as a human wall to do the scorpion. As fellow guest Joel McHale says, “This is awesome.” And that was before he saw where Nina put her feet.

Still, it’s the dismount we think Conan will recall most fondly — and what made him take a victory lap. Good times!  READ FULL STORY »
