mtvU's Fandom Awards pit 'Sherlock,' 'Doctor Who,' 'Supernatural' fans (and others) against each other

Fandom-Awards.jpg

Listen up, Tumblr users, fan-fiction writers, cosplayers, and Redditors—and even you, people of the Internet who casually upvote and reblog. Have you ever wanted recognition for loving the things you love? Well, it’s time for you to win some awards.

MTV’s 24-hour college network, mtvU, announces the categories and nominees for the first annual “mtvU Fandom Awards” today. The categories include everything from “Fandom Feat of the Year” (which is more valuable, a successful Kickstarter campaign, a la Veronica Mars, or a successful season renewal,a la Community?) to “‘Ship of the year,” which includes suggestions both canon and not (like Hunger Games’ Katniss and Peeta, and Sherlock’s Sherlock and John, respectively).

PopWatch Confessional: I haven't watched this much MTV since high school

There are currently three different shows that I look forward to on three different nights on MTV. Three. And that’s not including when Catfish is on, or when the tragically though understandably cancelled Buckwild earned a DVR season pass last year.

I am currently watching—and what’s more, I’m eagerly anticipating—as many MTV shows now as I did in high school, when watercooler talk was discussing a Road Rules challenge in first-period bio or raving at lunch about the True Life episode where they go to fat camp. For me, high school was Next and Made, The Osbournes and Newlyweds, afterschool reruns of Singled Out and Undressed and Elimidate and Daria and Celebrity Deathmatch.

Well, those times are now far gone, and truth be told I’ve seen MTV’s programming lineup come and go these past few years with little piquing my interest save for the addictive Catfish. I’ve been unaware of the network for years. This could be because I’m no longer in high school, of course, but I do believe that good material can always be consumed by multiple demographics (hence why your grandma is reading Mockingjay).

That’s not to say that the programs I’m relishing on MTV now are particularly good, per se — but for whatever reason they’re working for me, and I’m digging this random new resurgence.

'Teen Wolf' react: The teens open the door to a world of crazy in season 3-B

Teen Wolf has always been a show that teeters on the precipice of being too much; just a heartbeat away from getting a little too big for its mythology britches and then blaming it all on a dream sequence. I’m not saying that was the case with this dream sequence, and its dance with the overkill devil is certainly what keeps me tuning in for more. I’m just saying that the dream-within-a-dream-times-infinity was a nerve-wracking way to start 3-B. READ FULL STORY

'Teen Wolf' finale recap: 'I am the Alpha'

TEEN-WOLF-FINALE-01.jpg

Whoa. Well done, Teen Wolf.

After what’s turning out to be arguably its best season yet, Teen Wolf closed out season 3A with a danger-filled, heart-pounder of a finale that delivered action until the final moments. Seriously, guys. OMG, OMFG, OPP … and all those other things the kids say. [Details on all of it are forthcoming. So proceed with caution, DVRers...]

PopWatch Planner: 'Teen Wolf' ends, 'You're Next' begins, and 'Dexter' goes hunting

Summer might be coming to an end, but like high school coaches always say, “It’s important to finish strong!” At least, that’s what we imagine them saying based on the television shows we’ve watched involving high school coaches. Regardless, grab your remotes, your movie tickets, and your reading glasses, because pop culture has a lot in store for you this week: READ FULL STORY

The 10 movies, TV shows, and brands that ruled Comic-Con on social media

The buzziest project at the four-day geekfest known as Comic-Con must have been something with elaborate costumes, breathtaking special effects, and an epic battle between good and evil… right?

Interestingly, not so much.

EW has partnered with General Sentiment to develop aggregate scores that record not just what’s trending on social media, but also what users are actually saying about those topics. And according to our analysis, the most talked-about thing on social media at the Con wasn’t superhero, sci-fi, or fantasy-related — it was CBS’s How I Met Your Mother, a sitcom entering its ninth and final season this fall.

Those who feel that TV has taken over the Comic-Con crown from movies in recent years have reason to feel validated in this data as well: four of the top five topics trending this year were TV shows (X-Men being the lone movie in that short list).

Check the list below to see which other TV shows, movies, and brands made the top 10 list.

'Teen Wolf' star Tyler Posey takes EW's Pop Culture Personality Test

Tonight’s Teen Wolf looks intense to say the least. In fact, the episode, which takes the gang to a very sketchy motel, features what star Tyler Posey called a “very emotional” scene that left everyone on set in tears.

Luckily, there were no tears when Posey visited EW HQ in Los Angeles a few weeks ago to take our Pop Culture Personality Test! Mostly just healthy venting about the sometimes frustrating Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, some Fight Club quoting, and some reminiscing about the child-inappropriate Desperado. Check out these moments and more below:

PopWatch Planner: 'Man of Steel' takes flight, True Blood, and more

This weekend, you’ll believe a man can fly — at least, Warner Bros. sure hopes you will — with the opening of its Christopher Nolan-produced Superman movie Man of Steel. Advance word on the film has been carefully curated with a series of teasers and trailers that play up the grave gorgeousness of the film and its star, Henry Cavill. Meanwhile, summer TV is getting even more supernatural with the season premieres of Teen Wolf and True Blood.

Plus, a new novel, some hot doctors in the Hamptons, and more!
