'Twilight' dominates Teen Choice Awards nominations

The sun has set (or risen?) on Summit Entertainment’s venerable vampire series — but even though it, like Robsten, is officially kaput, Twilight still holds a hypnotic power over people of a certain age. (That age is “young.”)

The last installment of the blood-sucking saga dominates the “first wave” of nominees at this year’s Teen Choice Awards, which single out the movies, TV series, music, fashion, comedians, athletes, and performers that resonate most with today’s 13- through 19-year-olds. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2 snagged seven nods, nine if you include star Taylor Lautner’s individual nominations for Choice Male Hottie and Choice Smile.

But even if you’re over the Cullens, there must be something you like on this list — the nominees range from Argo to Zooey Deschanel, and they cover everything from mainstream action movies to “Choice Electronic Dance Music Artist.” A full list of first-wave nominees is below; starting now, fans of an appropriate age can vote once per category each day at the TCA’s website. Additional nominees, as well as performers, presenters, and a host will be announced soon. The two-hour awards ceremony will air live Sunday, Aug. 11 at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.

Forbes ranks Robert Downey Jr. top grossing actor of 2012

The number crunchers over at Forbes have an announcement: Robert Downey Jr. is the top grossing actor of the year.

The Avengers was the only film Downey starred in this year, but its box office take, 1.5 billion worldwide, was high enough to propel him to the number one spot. But the Forbes crown comes with a few stipulations: For the box office money to count toward an actor’s total for the year, they must have had a leading role in the film — that Johnny Depp cameo in 21 Jump Street doesn’t count! — and for The Avengers, the Forbes team deemed Downey the star over his co-actors. “Yes, The Avengers are a group but Downey is clearly the main star,” Forbes explained. “Much of the film relied on Downey’s charm and humor.”

Other people raking in the box office cash this year were usual suspects like the Twilight trio. Kristen Stewart came in at number two combining her Twilight box office with Snow White and the Huntsman. Franchise-starrers such as Christian Bale, Daniel Craig, and Jennifer Lawrence also did well. Interestingly, the article states that they gave leading role status to Stewart’s co-stars Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, allowing all three credit for Breaking Dawn – Part 2’s massive haul. But for other franchise movies it was just the lead, which explains why Emma Stone, who co-starred in The Amazing Spider-Man, isn’t on this list, but Andrew Garfield ranks number seven.

A newbie and a superfan discuss 'Breaking Dawn -- Part 2.' Will the romance work on a Twi-virgin?

ADAM B. VARY: Last year, I guided my colleague Dan Snierson through his very first experience with a wizard named Harry Potter — Dan had neither read J.K. Rowling’s books nor seen any of the movies, and we both wanted to see what would happen when a Potter newbie watched the final Potter movie. He had fun, I had fun, and I daresay at least four or five readers of our subsequent conversation about the experience had fun too.

And now it would seem the wand is in the other hand, or the the promise ring is on the other finger, or something. Because as I write these words, the final feature film in The Twilight Saga is nigh upon us, but this time, I’m the one who has never read any of Stephenie Meyer’s books nor seen any of the feature films. As I gear up to become the pop-culture guinea pig and see Breaking Dawn — Part 2 with only the second-hand knowledge I’ve absorbed walking the halls of EW, you, Denise Warner, have bravely agreed to escort me through all the vampiric romance and Taylor Lautner shirtlessness. I mean, there will be shirtlessness, right?

DENISE WARNER: You know, I can’t promise shirtlessness. READ FULL STORY

'Twilight' is a marathon, not a sprint

When I volunteered to watch a five-movie Twilight Saga marathon, I’ll admit I didn’t fully anticipate the challenges and doubts I’d encounter along the way. As the weeks, then days, then hours ticked down, I realized I’d need to get my head in the game. I trained like any marathoner would, honing skills appropriate to the course — subsisting on a diet of carbohydrates, carbonated drinks, and stale air; sitting on my rear for long periods of time, and abandoning all thoughts of age-appropriate content or cinematic quality. Also like any marathoner, I blacked out for long periods of time between the start and finish lines. But! Here’s what I do remember… READ FULL STORY

Stephenie Meyer says more 'Twilight' books a possibility, but not today

Just when you thought it was over, it’s not!

Twilight author Stephenie Meyer refused to commit to the rumor that she may write additional volumes of her already elaborate teen vampire saga at a press conference for the final film in the series, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2. She did say, however, the idea of more blood, sex and tears in future books wasn’t impossible either.

In fact, she admitted to having already thought through the entire story. “I planned out where it would go for a couple more books,” she said. “So, I knew exactly what would happen,” of the storyline that involves Jake, played by Taylor Lautner in the films, and Renesmee, played by Mackenzie Foy, following the end of Breaking Dawn.

'Twilight' is over! The cast shares memories, regrets and weird fan encounters

“I don’t have to walk away,” actress Kristen Stewart told a room full of reporters at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills during her final American press conference for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2.

Yep, the phenomenon that you couldn’t get enough of (or get away from, whichever your feeling on Twilight), is coming to screeching halt with the release of the final movie November 16.

Is Stewart glad it’s all finally over? The 22-year-old actress who essentially grew up on the set of Twilight movies, (the first one was filmed in 2008 when she was just 17), is relieved. “I am so happy that the story is told, you have no idea,” she said. “The fact that this thing is out and not weighing on us anymore, super excited about that.”
