Hollywood reacts to 'The Interview' cancellation at People Magazine Awards

On Wednesday, news broke that Sony Pictures Entertainment was canceling the theatrical release of The Interview. The move came as the result of a cyber attack against the studio and violent threats against cineplexes that intended to screen the film. The following day, at Thursday’s inaugural People Magazine Awards, Entertainment Weekly asked those in attendance their opinions on the matter.

The issue is, of course, complicated. On one hand, while the film’s subject matter is controversial—it centers on an assassination attempt against North Korean leader Kim Jong-un—filmmakers have the right to free speech. On the other hand, the threats against cineplexes, and in effect movie goers planning to attend, brought up major safety concerns. Reactions on the carpet were, in a word, mixed. READ FULL STORY

'Spider-Man' spins off: 20 thoughts on 'Venom,' 'The Sinister Six,' and Sony's franchise gambit

1. Jesus.

2. Sony’s announcement that they will expand their rebooted Amazing Spider-Man franchise in every conceivable direction represents a new peak in Hollywood’s current vogue for franchise-building brinksmanship. Marvel Studios revealed their master plan gradually: Release an Iron Man here, announce a Thor there, wait until Avengers is a hit before you start really freaking people out with Guardians of the Galaxy.

After X-Men: First Class was an okay-not-gangbusters hit, Fox carefully retrenched: Mix in the original director and the original cast, throw out one fan-bait title (Days of Future Past) and then, when they least expect it, throw out another (Apocalypse.) When Disney announced Star Wars: Episode VII, they led with a creative-team announcement: Michael Arndt is writing it! You know him! Toy Story 3! (There followed a lengthy search for a director — the Internet Age equivalent of Selznick looking for his Scarlett O’Hara — and the eventual departure of Arndt.) Warner Bros. is building up to Justice League one granular casting announcement at a time. READ FULL STORY

The State of Playstation: 23 ways of looking at Sony's E3 presentation

The-Order-1886.jpg

1. There is a general perception that the Playstation 3 was not the winner in the dying videogame generation. This is not to say that it lost. The Playstation 3 produced some of the most beautiful games ever created. It is a high-powered machine. The freaking Air Force used it to create a freaking supercomputer. But it didn’t have the mass appeal of the Wii or the swagger of the Xbox 360. It was merely excellent. The Playstation 2 was excellent, also, but it utterly defined its generation. In a weird way, even if the sales tell a different story, Sony is coming into this E3 as an underdog. READ FULL STORY
