Melanie LaPatin on 'So You Think You Can Dance': This is how we do it!

Hi, guys! Thank you, as always, for all of your questions and comments. (You got me, AL — this must be why I’d never make it as a fact-checker!) Before we dive in to last night’s SYTYCD performances, I thought I’d try to ‘A’ Rebecca’s ‘Q’ about what the days leading up to the show are like, at least from my (and, I assume, most choreographers’) perspective…

Usually, once my partner, Tony Meredith, and I get to L.A. (or Canada, obviously, if we’re working on the Canadian version), it goes something like this:

Day 1: By the time Tony and I meet the dancers, we will have already worked out the choreography that we have in mind for them — which, heaven knows, is a must — and will have already even sent the wardrobe department design ideas! This first day together, we only get 90 minutes (on camera, no less) to show the couple their moves. After that, we head over to the costume designer to look into their wardrobe, and the dancers practice on their own. READ FULL STORY

'So You Think You Can Dance': Discuss the Top 10 performances!

This is it, Dance fans. The moment we’ve all been waiting for! Neil Patrick Harris is going to bring it tonight as a guest judge. Oh yeah, and there’s that little fact that the all-stars will be back! With a lot of the dead weight (hey! you said it, not me) stripped away last week, I actually have hope that tonight’s episode could be a silver lining in this dark cloud of a season. If nothing else, NPH can regale us with tales of dancing with Hugh Jackman. So, enjoy the show, and in the meanwhile, share your thoughts on who did the best tonight, who didn’t live up to expectations, and which all-star trounced his or her fellow alums. (UPDATE: Click here for the So You Think You Can Dance top 10 performance recap!) READ FULL STORY

'So You Think You Can Dance': Which all-star will wipe the floor with his or her fellow alums?

Last night, Nigel Lythgoe announced So You Think You Can Dance‘s season 8 all-stars. There were more returning all-stars than not, and one big exclusion that has fans picking up their pitchforks and torches. Full roster and our take on the line-up after the jump.  READ FULL STORY

'SYTYCD': Mary Murphy on last night's eliminations, and all those Emmys

Fans up in arms on couples leaving the show. Who were the stars tonight? Who slipped, in my eyes!?

As I promised, I want to address so many of you about the fact that contestants are leaving as couples. This has not happened in the history of SYTYCD. Trust me, there is no conspiracy. We do not have to do this because of the network or Nigel. We would love nothing better to see a mix-match of partnerships, since this is the part of the show where we usually see a partner shift.

We try to take everything into account when we are backstage on Results Night. As Judges, we want to make the very best decision not based on what the viewers favorites may be, but based on dancing. Which brings us to hard decisions, since we LOVE all of them. READ FULL STORY

'So You Think You Can Dance': The eliminated contestants, and next week's All Stars, are...

So, Dance fans, who do you think needs to go tonight after last night’s performances? In light of Ryan’s unceremonious fall from grace, do you think she might actually not make it to the Top 10? What about those stumbles? How do you expect the show to celebrate its first-ever Emmy nomination for Best Reality Competition Show — and Cat Deeley’s nod as best Reality Show Host? And don’t you want Jesse Tyler Ferguson to be your new BFF? Share your thoughts while the live show airs, and we’ll reveal the results after they’re handed down. Update: The results are in. Who is dancing their way to the unemployment line? READ FULL STORY

Melanie LaPatin on 'So You Think You Can Dance': Falling for Sasha and Alexander

Has it really been a week since I blogged last? No, I mean, has it ONLY been a week?! The last few days alone have been such a blur that half the time I thought I oughta have my eyes checked! That’s because, as you probably know by now, I was in Canada last week working on So You Think You Can Dance there (the couple Tony and I choreographed made it onto the “hot tamale train”!), and in L.A. this week working on our home-grown version!

Sooo… the challenge for me this go-’round hasn’t been just to find the time to organize my thoughts to write this blog, but also to make sure that, after this whirlwind, I could still think, period! Haha! All kidding aside, it’s been busy, but it’s been exciting, too. And a little tense, because, after all, we ARE down to the Top 12 now, PLUS this was the first week that the dancers had to perform not one but two numbers ON TOP of their group number. So, determined as they were to put their game faces on, they were exhausted, emotionally and physically.

How did they do? Let’s see. Bearing in mind that 1) it turns out it is HARD to take notes during the show! and 2) it’s even harder for me to be impartial about dancers once I’ve met them and worked with them and seen firsthand just how sweet and adorable and talented they are, I AM going to be honest, brutally if need be, my picks for the Top 4 performances this week are: READ FULL STORY

'So You Think You Can Dance': Discuss the Top 12 performances!

Okay, these celebrity guest judges on So You Think You Can Dance are getting faintly ridiculous. Megan Mullally had formal dance and Broadway experience — okay. Debbie Reynolds tap-danced with Gene Kelly in Singin’ in the Rain — love it. And Kristin Chenoweth has won a Tony Award — not for dancing, but that’s fine. But last week’s celebrity judge was Carmen Electra, whose main contribution to last week’s judging panel was her ability to not always use the same generic adjective of bland praise and her ability to not show up for the results show night.

This week’s celebrity judge? Modern Family‘s Jesse Tyler Ferguson. READ FULL STORY

'SYTYCD': Mary Murphy on the Top 14 week's new choreographers and new judges

Due to some technical difficulties, Mary Murphy’s blog entry for last week’s Top 14 episodes of So You Think You Can Dance was unfortunately delayed. Better late than never, here are her full insights and observations about what went down on Wednesday night’s performance episode and Thursday night’s results.

Last Wednesday’s episode was an exciting night with new choreographers and new judges!

Yes, some new choreographers came in with a big splash, while others, not so much. I’m happy to report I loved the work that Justin Giles did with the seven guys — it was interesting and kept my attention the entire time. His other number also hit big, a contemporary piece starring Jess and Clarice, who in my opinion are coming on stronger every week. It will be interesting to see what happens when this partnership is broken up.

The choreographer in the hot seat is Shaun Evaristo, who choreographed Alexander and Sasha. I felt really bad that such a dynamic couple were not given choreography that played to their strengths. READ FULL STORY

'So You Think You Can Dance': And the eliminated contestants are...

So, Dance fans, after some of the wheat was separated from the chaff last week — and one dancer was (according to many of your comments) unfairly sent home — who’s next on the chopping block? Will Carmen Electra’s stripperobic proclivities have an effect on the judges’ panel? How hard is Nigel fighting to keep Ryan on this show? Discuss it all as it goes down live, and we’ll reveal the results shortly after the episode closes. Enjoy the show! UPDATE: The results are in. So who’s turned in and who’s turned out? Melanie LaPatin on 'So You Think You Can Dance': Great dance is like... ice cream?

Hello, everybody! To start this week’s blog, I thought I’d try answering a few comments from last week, since you seem to like that, and frankly, so do I. (And yes, of COURSE, I read your comments! Sometimes twice! Are you kidding? I’m human, and a slightly neurotic human at that!)

To Scarlet. Yes, starting this week, I will do my very best to remember to mention what each dance is when I’m writing about the dancers. Sorry about that. This stuff is so hardwired into my brain, I forget sometimes that not everyone speaks salsa as a second language. ;)

To GP, and to everybody else who’s been befuddled by my (and the judges’) admiration for Ryan. I hear you, and I understand. The best way for me to try and explain it is: You know how chocolate ice cream is good, and so is vanilla, but some people will like one and not really be all that jazzed about the other (and maybe even really DISLIKE the other)? Maybe, in a way, dancers are like that. Two dancers can both be very good, but for some intangible reason we may never understand, one moves us and the other doesn’t. READ FULL STORY
