Mary Murphy on 'SYTYCD': Going gaga for Gaga

In the eight seasons of So You Think You Can Dance, tonight’s show was the most exciting I’ve ever had. If Lady Gaga wasn’t enough, throw in film director Rob Marshall onto the judging panel! It was so surreal to sit next to celebrities that I admire that have so adored our show from the beginning. You know they are true fans when, during commercial breaks, they are chatting about contestants from season 1. How cool is that? And if the judging panel didn’t do it for you, Ellen DeGeneres, Portia de Rossi, and Katie Holmes were in the audience. I thought for a second that I must be having this crazy dance dream, because as I walked down the hallway after the show, I was greeted by Stevie Nicks. Amazing!

Now, on to the top eight contestants.

It was so great to see all the new all-stars. I haven’t seen Ivan in such a long time; it’s so great to see how his craft grows. I felt Ivan DID outdance Caitlynn in the hip-hop number by Marty Kudelka, but she did do well to keep up. It was also wonderful to see last year’s champion Lauren Froderman back in a Mandy Moore jazz routine starring Tadd. He definitely had the swagger, with moves like Michael Jackson and that Elvis Presley crooner look. READ FULL STORY

'So You Think You Can Dance': And the eliminated dancers are...

Gaga throwing shoes! Marko weeping! Sasha getting her Fierce back (in no small part thanks to Pasha, I am convinced). Last night was an eventful and powerful performance episode, to say the least. Who was your favorite, and who do you think should go home? Are you starting to feel the Melanie backlash, or do you think she’s got it in the bag? How pumped are you about whatever batty costume(s) Gaga will don during her performance? Is it starting to hit you that the show is on the upswing when there are only a few weeks left? Post your comments while the live show airs, and we’ll be back after the close to reveal which two dancers are going home and the names of next week’s all-stars. UPDATE: The results have been announced. This show is nothing if not an unpredictable animal, so no All-Stars were announced, though eliminations were doled out. And the dancers going home are… READ FULL STORY

'So You Think You Can Dance': Marko's performance made Lady Gaga cry. Did you weep?

TV makes me cry disproportionately more than real-life, so I was a little confused when the camera panned to tear-stained Lady Gaga after Marko’s performance last night, and I sat there with dry eyes. Don’t get me wrong. His performance was gorgeous and very touching, but tear-worthy? I’m not so sure.

I’m sure the song — Jeff Buckley’s “I Know It’s Over” — played a major part in the weeping effect the piece had on The Gaga. It’s a hauntingly lovely tune that was a perfect fit for the message of the dance. But is my heart going cold? Did the performance move you to tears, too? Or were last night’s tears something for the Overreaction Files? Also, do you think the fly on Lady Gaga’s hat was attracted to her because she perpetually smells like meat or did it just want a hug? Watch the clip. READ FULL STORY

Melanie LaPatin on 'So You Think You Can Dance': Jordan can't get any better (Can she?)

Melanie_LaPatin_1

Hi, kids! Writing to you this week from beauteous Toronto, where I’m working on So You Think You Can Dance/Canada! (Would’ve been hard to work on SYTYCD/Spain from here, obviously! Haha!) Before we dive in, first things first, and those “things” are thank-yous! Thank you to all of you who have “Liked” the Facebook page for my plugged-in “dance” album Ballroom Remixed and to all of you who have “Liked” the page for me (myself and I) AND to all of you who have “Friended” my studio, Dance Times Square! Remember, you can always pop in and sign up for a lesson from my instructors and/or me. (Though lately, most weeks, I seem to be bopping from hither to yon! Where do I live again?). Our motto at the studio is, “It doesn’t matter if you come in with two left feet… we’ll set you right!”

Now then, a bunch of you have asked about how our routines on SYTYCD are created. In particular, how much do we tailor our choreography to reflect the strengths of the particular dancers we are working with? Let me see if I can answer that in under a thousand words… READ FULL STORY

'So You Think You Can Dance': Discuss the Top 8 performances!

The first time I’d ever heard of Lady Gaga was three years ago, during the Top 6 results show of So You Think You Can Dance‘s fourth season. Re-watching it now, I’m struck by a few things immediately: TV sunglasses! Pointy shoulder pads! Crotch gestures! Light-up scepters! Strong vocals!

So what I’m saying is all the raw materials were right there for all to notice, and yet here is all I had to say about her in my recap of that episode: “Did you catch the kid in the catwalk doing Katee’s spazzy elbow dance to Lady GaGa’s ‘Just Dance’? And, speaking of Lady GaGa, are you getting the sinking feeling that female shoulder pads are starting to make a comeback?”

Isn’t it adorable how I spelled it “GaGa”? Anyhoodle, things are coming full circle, with Ms. Germanotta now sitting next to Mary Murphy as a guest judge, along with Chicago director Rob Marshall. READ FULL STORY

'SYTYCD': Mary Murphy on judging with Neil Patrick Harris and her one great regret

Neil Patrick Harris judges, a fabulous night of dancing, a short sit-down with Jason Gilkison, and my own personal mistake that I regret!

Well, I’m the first one to admit that Sasha should have been on the hot tamale train. I had every intention. It was even in my own notes. But sometimes when you are up there, things happen and you get carried away, and I wanted her to know that I felt she was an all-star in my mind and every bit as good as Twitch. When I look back on past seasons, that will be one of my regrets, and I hope to tell her so. I felt that routine and their chemistry was so hot it was getting close to an X rating. Props to choreographer Christopher Scott for a memorably hot Cha-cha-cha. READ FULL STORY

'So You Think You Can Dance': And the eliminated contestants and next week's all-stars are...

Hey there, Dance fans, who do you think is on the chopping block tonight? Now that America’s vote is the final say in who goes home, do you Mitchell will have enough support to overcome last night’s Broadway debacle? Will Melanie’s fanbase keep her in strong standing even though her solo debut wasn’t as strong as it could have been? Will Tyce demand an on-air from NPH? Is there any chance they’ll dedicate most of the show to shirtless moments with Pasha, Brandon, and Robert? (Hey, a girl can hope!) Share your thoughts while the live show airs, and we’ll reveal the results at the close of tonight’s show. UPDATE: The dancers going home tonight are… READ FULL STORY

Melanie LaPatin on 'So You Think You Can Dance': This is how we do it!

Melanie_LaPatin_1

Hi, guys! Thank you, as always, for all of your questions and comments. (You got me, AL — this must be why I’d never make it as a fact-checker!) Before we dive in to last night’s SYTYCD performances, I thought I’d try to ‘A’ Rebecca’s ‘Q’ about what the days leading up to the show are like, at least from my (and, I assume, most choreographers’) perspective…

Usually, once my partner, Tony Meredith, and I get to L.A. (or Canada, obviously, if we’re working on the Canadian version), it goes something like this:

Day 1: By the time Tony and I meet the dancers, we will have already worked out the choreography that we have in mind for them — which, heaven knows, is a must — and will have already even sent the wardrobe department design ideas! This first day together, we only get 90 minutes (on camera, no less) to show the couple their moves. After that, we head over to the costume designer to look into their wardrobe, and the dancers practice on their own. READ FULL STORY

'So You Think You Can Dance': Discuss the Top 10 performances!

This is it, Dance fans. The moment we’ve all been waiting for! Neil Patrick Harris is going to bring it tonight as a guest judge. Oh yeah, and there’s that little fact that the all-stars will be back! With a lot of the dead weight (hey! you said it, not me) stripped away last week, I actually have hope that tonight’s episode could be a silver lining in this dark cloud of a season. If nothing else, NPH can regale us with tales of dancing with Hugh Jackman. So, enjoy the show, and in the meanwhile, share your thoughts on who did the best tonight, who didn’t live up to expectations, and which all-star trounced his or her fellow alums. (UPDATE: Click here for the So You Think You Can Dance top 10 performance recap!) READ FULL STORY

'So You Think You Can Dance': Which all-star will wipe the floor with his or her fellow alums?
