I'm Still Not Over... Patrick Dempsey not winning 'Sexiest Man Alive'

Growing up, the “Sexiest Man Alive” issue of People Magazine was a big deal in my house. By the age of 15, I had all the names of every “Sexiest Man” memorized, and while there were always years when I disagreed with People‘s choice, there was only one error that I filed in the “unforgivable” category. (And once you see his hair, you will know why.)

Every year, the Internet starts gossiping about the “Sexiest Man” selection well ahead of time, and in 2005, the debate was on between Matthew McConaughey and Patrick Dempsey. Now, both of these men were in my “Top 10 Hottest Men” list at the time, so I wasn’t about to dislike either choice. But there was just something about Dempsey that felt like he was, without a doubt, the sexiest man alive in that moment.

See, in 2005, Grey’s Anatomy launched, and by the time People‘s Sexiest issue came out, season 2 of the hit show—arguably the series’ best—had begun. So at that point, Dempsey was already carrying around the “McDreamy” label as one half of television’s hottest couple. Heck, that’s why EW put Dempsey and co-star Ellen Pompeo on our September 2005 cover.

As for McConaughey, he too could rock some flowing locks, but what did he have in 2005? Sahara and Two for the Money. And despite how good his triceps looked in Sahara, I’m just not buying it. I mean, had People seen the way that Dempsey leaned on things and smirked? The man oozed sex appeal in the subtlest of ways.

However, looking back now, I’m not just mad that Dempsey was passed over in 2005. In fact, 2006 was probably his perfect year. Yep, 2006 was prime Dempsey, something I can chalk up to two things: Grey’s Anatomy‘s season 2 finale and season 3 premiere.

In Grey’s Anatomy‘s season 2 finale, Dempsey gave viewers what I consider to be the single sexiest look of all-time. When Derek sees Meredith across the dance floor at the hospital’s prom—it’s a long story—the way he looks at her can’t really be described with words, but let’s just say nobody wondered why she stormed off the floor because she couldn’t breathe. Then? They had sex. Obviously.

Additionally, in September of 2006, Dempsey gave us an unforgettable moment when Derek finally admitted that he was in love with Meredith. But it was better than just an “I love you,” because well, he’s Patrick Dempsey.

And before you tell me he’s just a good actor and Shonda Rhimes is a great writer, let me be clear—I’m also speaking to Dempsey’s off-screen personality. He’s a family man. He races cars, which gives him an edge. And his sense of humor is almost as great as his smile. Also in 2006? He graced the cover of Us Weekly with word “Sexy” in big bold letters. Big. Bold. Letters.

With all that having been said, I do realize that in order for Dempsey to take the 2006 title, he would’ve had to have beaten George Clooney, who is the king of all sexy men. No, I’m not saying Dempsey is sexier than Clooney, but what I am saying is that Clooney can win any year, so why give it to him the year he did The Good German?

And if skipping Dempsey two years in a row wasn’t bad enough, 2007—arguably the last real shot for McDreamy in terms of Grey’s Anatomy‘s peak—marked the time he was overlooked for Matt Damon. Yes, Damon was Jason Bourne, but there’s a reason Dempsey was on the cover of TV Guide‘s “Sexy Issue” that year, not to mention EW‘s Photo Issue. Also, Enchanted!

So now the question remains: Is it too late for Dempsey? Honestly, it never is, but his hair is starting to get a little out of control, and I fear the worst.

I’ll leave you with this.

Chris-Mas in November: Which Chris is your 'Sexiest Man Alive'?

People named Chris Hemsworth this year’s Sexiest Man Alive—but is he the right Chris for the job?

Hemsworth is one of many alluring actors who share the same name. There’s also Into the Woods‘ Chris Pine, Captain America‘s Chris Evans, and Guardians of the Galaxy’s Chris Pratt (who’s currently on the cover of GQ‘s Men of the Year issue).

Of course, there are also many other famous (and attractive) men named Chris—Chris Messina, Chris Rock, Chris Tucker—but Hemsworth, Pine, Evans, and Pratt are the ones you’re most likely to confuse for one another. For one, they all look great in scruffy facial hair. And they’re all white. And they’ve all starred in big-budget geek-bait franchises.

But they do have some differences from one another. Here’s what makes each Chris the right—and wrong—choice for Sexiest Man Alive.

It’s official: Chris Hemsworth is People‘s Sexiest Man Alive 2014.

After much debate—and much discussion of Chris Pratt possibly taking the title—Jimmy Kimmel announced People‘s pick during Tuesday night’s show. And despite Hemsworth’s name being left out of some of the conversations prior to the reveal, it isn’t hard to see why he made the cut. Abs and accent aside, the man is Thor—not to mention the star of Michael Mann’s upcoming Blackhat. READ FULL STORY

Bradley Cooper to star in 'The Elephant Man' on Broadway this fall -- EXCLUSIVE

If you’ve ever had the burning desire to see one of the hottest film stars of the moment bray, “I am not an animal!” you’re in luck. Bradley Cooper, who just received his second Oscar nomination in as many years for his fussy, conflicted G-man in David O. Russell’s American Hustle, will be returning to Broadway after an eight-year absence, the actor’s reps tell EW. (His last appearance was opposite Julia Roberts and Paul Rudd in 2006’s Three Days of Rain, for which he got very good notices.)

The red-hot actor will headline a revival of Bernard Pomerance’s The Elephant Man, playing John Merrick, the severely deformed, soulful figure memorably embodied on film in David Lynch’s 1980 film version by John Hurt. The play, unlike the film, has the leading actor suggest deformity through physicality without the aid of makeup or prosthetics, so you’ll get to see Cooper in all his golden-boy glory, just like in the large pic right here, which highlights Mr. Cooper’s 2012 performance in the play at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. This marks the second Broadway revival of Pomerance’s Tony-winning play, after a 2002 production starring Billy Crudup and Kate Burton, who were both nominated for Tonys for their work.

No word yet on whether Patricia Clarkson (who played Mrs. Kendal, the actress who befriends Merrick) or Alessandro Nivola (who played Dr. Treves, and also happens to costar in Hustle with Cooper) will rejoin People‘s former Sexiest Man Alive for the Broadway run, but further details are promised at a later date.

Hey girl, Ryan Gosling looks hot even when his face is totally busted -- PHOTO

In 2011, the Internet nearly revolted when Ryan Gosling lost the title of People‘s Sexiest Man Alive to Bradley Cooper — a star whose French language skills beat out Gosling’s Tumblr dominance and his smoking performances in Drive, The Ides of March, and Crazy, Stupid, Love.

But things might change next year. While he took a break from the spotlight in 2012, Gosling will return to theaters in 2013 with four movies — including Only God Forgives. And as this new poster for that Nicolas Winding Refn film proves, Gosling somehow manages to be sexy even when his eye is swollen shut and half of his beautiful face has been bloodied. If this doesn’t make a statement about Gosling’s hotness quotient, nothing will. Here’s the poster:

Channing Tatum named 'People's Sexiest Man Alive

people-channing-tatum.jpg

After the Bradley Cooper/Ryan Gosling contretemps of 2011, it’s difficult to argue with People‘s choice for this year’s Sexiest Man Alive. Not only does Channing Tatum look the part, but he’s wrapping up a calendar year where he proved he was funny (21 Jump Street and Saturday Night Live), sweet and sensitive (The Vow), and had the moves of a stripper (Magic Mike). All three of those movies topped more than $110 million at the box office, and he was a main attraction in each.

“My first thought was, ‘Y’all are messing with me,'” the 32-year-old Tatum, who married actress Jenna Dewan-Tatum in 2009, told the magazine. “I told Jenna after we’d been in the bathtub washing our dogs because they’d gotten skunked.”

“People know him to be fun and sexy, but they don’t know how emotionally deep and spiritually open he is,” Dewan-Tatum, 31, told People “He is such an open-hearted person; what you see is what you get.”
