Logo to air 'Dragtastic' comedy special tonight: Host Pandora Boxx gives EW a preview!

Pandora-BoxxImage Credit: LogoTonight at 10 p.m., Logo will air a comedy special called One Night Stand Up: Dragtastic, marking the extremely rare occasion in the history of the fledgling gay cable network where it features a bunch of really funny drag queens. Oh, wait. Who the hell are we kidding? Really funny drag queens—hello RuPaul’s Drag Race, which launches its third season a week from today!—are the bread and butter of Logo! And thus, why we here at EW are always glued to the network. One of the best parts about tonight’s stand-up special Dragtastic—even though we haven’t seen the TV cut yet—is the host: none other than EW fave and RuPaul’s Drag Race and RuPaul’s Drag U alum Pandora Boxx is the emcee. Remember Pandora’s killer Carol Channing impression from last season of Drag Race? To celebrate her shining moment back in the Logo spotlight, EW spent a few minutes catching up with Pandora when she was in NYC shooting the special last August. Enjoy:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What exactly is One Night Stand Up: Dragtastic?
PANDORA BOXX: Dragtastic is a stand-up comedy special for drag queens, and they did one last year that was shot in LA and [RuPaul’s Drag Race season 1 contestant] Ongina hosted it, and the queens were Varla Jean Merman, Miss Coco Peru, and Jackie Beat, and they’re doing another one this year and it’s going to be hosted by me and it has four drag queens in it: Bianca Del Rio, Harmonica Sunbeam, Mimi Imfurst, Hedda Lettuce, and Kelly Mantle. [See photo.] Each queen is going to have their time out on the stage—it’s like a stand up comedy special, only with men dressed like ladies.

'RuPaul's Drag U': A pre-season finale update with EW fave Pandora Boxx

Just take a look back at my TV recap of the episode this past March when she was voted off the show, when I called her offing the most “controversial elimination of the season.” Or, in the print magazine, when we wrote on Bullseye: “Pandora Boxx, in our hearts you are America’s Next Drag Superstar… even if RuPaul doesn’t think so.” We love! And, of course, we’ve loved seeing her return to Logo and the RuPaul world with this premiere season of RuPaul’s Drag U, which makes over biological women in drag style. With the finale — which stars Ms. Pandora Boxx — airing this coming Monday at 9 p.m., what better time to check in with her? Here, she talks the finale, how her life has changed since Drag Race, and the possibility of scoring her own show.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So let’s talk about Drag U. You’ve been a mentor this season. How have you liked that?
PANDORA BOXX: The best thing about Drag U to me — and what made me want to sign up right away — is that I knew I couldn’t get eliminated. Even though there was someone who has said in the past that my elimination from Drag Race was the most controversial of the season.

That was us, wasn’t it? That was me!
It was!

'RuPaul's Drag U' series premiere: Thankfully, gay television -- and RuPaul -- return tonight!

drag-uImage Credit: LogoFace it: Summer television is A) not gay enough (True Blood can’t do it all!), and B) sadly devoid of the presence of RuPaul. But thank your lucky stars, because tonight TV gets gayer and draggier — and RuPaul reemerges! That’s right: It’s the much-anticipated premiere of RuPaul’s Drag U, the Drag Race spin-off that features some of the original show’s fave queens making over straight ladies — RuPaul calls them “biological women” — who are in dire need of some TLC and a new look. Tonight, specifically, centers on “lady-boys” Jujubee, Ongina, and Raven — loves these three so much! — showing three “boy-ladies” how it’s done. (Personally, I can’t wait for creepy Drag Race season 1 contestant Tammie Brown to become a “professor” later in the season. Messsss!)

Now, we here at PopWatch are happy to present a quick chat with the queen who ruffled everyone’s feathers this season. Below, she talks about whether she’s heard from idol Beyoncé yet, how much she paid for that new grill of hers (not as much as you might expect!), and who’s she’s hoping to work with in the future.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Congrats on the big win last night! How’d you manage to keep it secret for so long?
TYRA SANCHEZ: I would just tell myself in the mirror to just talk to myself and not anyone else. No one would know.

Everyone is wondering: Have you heard from your idol Beyoncé yet?
No, not yet! Hopefully one day. Maybe I could lipsync at one of her concerts or be in a movie or video with her—that would be hot. She would be the most ultimate person I would love to hear from.

'RuPaul's Drag Race' season finale and reunion recap: And the winner is...

RuPauls-Drag-Race-FinaleImage Credit: LogoAs I live-blogged the finale of RuPaul’s Drag Race last night on LogoTV.com, via my Twitter account, there was quite the debate raging: Who should effing win this big ol’ mess of a drag competition? (And I say “mess” with all the love in my heart.) Tyra, the fierce, Beyoncé-loving queen who had oft been called a “lazy bitch” by her competitors? Raven, the dark, trash-talking lady with pierced lips? Or Jujubee, the sweet gaysian glamazon with a heart of gold? There was no clear answer, as arguments from Team Tyra, Team Raven, and Team Jujubee abounded.

And despite the menagerie of reader/viewer thoughts in every different direction, I couldn’t decide myself who should walk away as America’s Next Drag Superstar. Thank goodness we had a wise mama like RuPaul who could make this difficult decision: The crown — literally, a huge, gaudy, diamond-encrusted monstrosity — eventually went to Tyra Sanchez, who I realized during the show’s retrospective moments largely dominated the competition for most of the season and deserved to win. 'RuPaul's Drag Race' recap: Top moments from last night's clip show

rupaul-dragraceImage Credit: LogoAs a run-up to next week’s two-and-a-half-hour finale extravaganza — that’s one hour of the actual show, one hour of reunion, and a half-hour of spin-off Untucked — last night’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race wasn’t just a regular installment of main stage action, of course. Rather, it was “The Main Event Clip Show,” a sprite look back at the highs and lows of the season. In that vein, rather than just a straight-up recap here on PopWatch, let’s take a look at the highs of last night’s episode. Because, honestly, can you truly recap what was essentially a recap show itself? Here goes:

• That dramatic opening! Talk about, as RuPaul would say, an “eleganza extravaganza”! J’adore the ridiculous heightened-ness of it all — RuPaul amongst balloons, belting diva anthem “Main Event” from her latest album. It was the perfect launch, dripping with silly decadence. But honestly, RuPaul is always werquing in some product placement, what with it being her own song, right? A gurl’s gotta eat, but more on that in just a second…

'RuPaul's Drag Race' recap: 'And then there were three...'

rupaul-dragraceLast night’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race wasn’t totally devoid of the dearly, dearly departed Pandora Boxx, who unfortunately bit the dust two weeks ago. The hour opened with the ladies seeing the lipsticked message my favorite queen left for them on the workroom’s mirror: “Lick this boxx, bitch.” Even post-elimination, Pandora is still bringing the funny to Drag Race! Thank goodness!

The episode featured the “fantastic final four”  — Tatianna, Jujubee, Raven, and Tyra Sanchez — fighting it out for RuPaul’s trio of fake Diva Awards. They each had to create a look for three different awards shows: the Teen Diva Awards, a Teen Choice-ish type ceremony; the Diva D.C. Press Awards, a more professional-type show; and the Diva Hollywood Extravaganza Awards, the pinnacle of the awards season that focused on “glamour and eleganza,” according to RuPaul. It goes without saying that queens live for awards shows! I couldn’t help but think about how well the producers had managed to zero in on the things — Gone With the Wind, celebrity impersonations, brides — this season that so tickle the LGBT community. Awards shows, with all their ridiculous drama and glamour, certainly fall into that category, too! The challenges — the main ones, mind you, not the usually pointless mini challenges — have been simply delightful so far this season.

'RuPaul's Drag Race' recap: Drag mamas, Cloris Leachman, and the season's most controversial elimination!

Well, mostly — and yes, I’m gazing in your direction, Tatianna. But last night’s elimination on RuPaul’s Drag Race stung more than just a usual top-five send-off. You see, my favorite constant on the show — that’d be Ms. Pandora Boxx — was forced to “sashay away,” after the judges and RuPaul agreed that her “drag mother” had out-shined the sweet, hilarious Pandora. And at the same time, a lesser contestant — yes, we’re back to you, Ms. Tatianna — was allowed to remain on the show. I’m in no position to tell the judges when they’ve made a mistake, but doesn’t that go without saying in this case? Yup. READ FULL STORY »

'RuPaul's Drag Race' recap: The queens throw shade and shill books

RuPaulsDragRaceImage Credit: LogoOne of the things that really stuck out to me on last night’s highly entertaining episode of Drag Race was what an amazing teacher — and self-promoter — RuPaul is for this fast-dwindling group of queens. The main challenge was all about having the ladies create a storyline for a book they’d potentially write about themselves and shoot a drag cover appropriate for said book. In addition, Pandora, Raven, Tyra, and the rest had to do a satellite interview with E!’s entertainment journalist Marc Malkin, where they’d try to incorporate both the name of their book and plugs for the Absolut Açaí vodka cocktail they were sipping. (Supposedly, açaí is a cross of blueberry and pomegranate. Who knew?!)

I say that RuPaul is the ultimate teacher and self-promoter because, if you watched carefully, the host plugged her book in several different ways throughout the episode — on the mainstage, while explaining the challenge to the queens, and by simply wearing the same outfit she wore on the book’s cover to the runway portion of the show. (Did you put that together? Genius!) What I mean is that this is one bish who knows how to work it, gurl! I’m continually impressed. If you didn’t, however, notice that RuPaul was plugging her book the whole time, that’s because, of course, she was doing a good, seamless job of working it in without knocking you over the head with it.
