Kareem Abdul-Jabbar wrote 2,700 words about why he loves 'Real Housewives'

NBA all-time leading scorer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar isn’t a big fan of HBO’s Girls, a “white ghetto” of a show filled with unappealing protagonists (“We’re supposed to find these girls somehow charming because of their flawed characters,” he wrote in February.) But in a new Huffington Post column, Abdul-Jabbar reveals that another group of (mostly) white, self-involved, fatally ignorant televised characters has indeed stolen his heart: The ladies of Bravo’s Real Housewives, a franchise the athlete lauds as “the best social insight into the American psyche since Huck Finn and Jim explored the soul of America on a raft of lost innocence.”

And that’s not even Abdul-Jabbar’s most hyperbolic analogy.  READ FULL STORY »

'Stars in Danger: The High Dive': tWitch and Shout with Antonio Sabato Jr. in a speedo

My esteemed colleague Mandi Bierly and I just sat through two hours of “celebrity” diving and can officially break this staggering news: Stephen “tWitch” Boss wore way too many clothes on So You Think You Can Dance. Nice shot, Fox! Well done. It’s a hit. READ FULL STORY »

When reality stars sing: Whose tune is the worst of all?

teen-mom-farrah.jpg

When reality stars sing, the results can be totally inoffensive (Brooke Hogan’s career) or surprisingly decent (Paris Hilton’s “Stars Are Blind” — seriously, it’s like a watered-down “Underneath It All”! In a good way!). More often, though, their songs are auto-tuned nightmares and tone-deaf raps, music that makes you yearn for a sweet shot of Adele to take the pain away.

In that vein, I offer up Teen Mom Farrah Abraham’s new single. Is it the worst piece of “music” in recorded history? It’s possible — though Abraham’s got some serious competition from other misguided reality crooners. Let’s survey the candidates, then decide which is the most rotten apple at the very bottom of the barrel:

Farrah Abraham (Teen Mom), “Getting Up from Rock Bottom”
The Lowdown: Knowing that this 21-year-old mother has endured substance abuse, depression, and her boyfriend’s death might make you feel bad about crapping all over her musical venture. But when a song is this dismal, it’s tough to practice the golden rule. Be sure to turn your speakers down before hitting “Play” on the linked SoundCloud file, unless you’d like to suffer from Pounding Eardrum Syndrome.
Worst Lyrics: Vocal effects are applied so thickly that you can’t really understand a word Abraham is yelping. Blessing in disguise?

Move over, She by Shereé! Former Real Housewives of Atlanta cast members Shereé Whitfield and Lisa “Closet Freak” Wu-Hartwell aren’t the only ones with eyes on the runway. RHOA breakout-turned-Glee guest star NeNe Leakes is launching her own fashion line, EW has confirmed.

Between readying for a fifth season of Housewives and preparing for her role on Ryan Murphy’s fall sitcom The New Normal, Leakes has a partnership with global licensing agency Beanstalk in the works. Though no papers have been signed yet, the company said Leakes hopes to create pieces “designed to empower women to walk into a room and ‘own it’ — like NeNe herself” at this week’s Licensing Expo 2012 Las Vegas. Bethenny Frankel wrapped her seventh season on reality TV last Monday and is currently preparing to plant her flag to the talk-show circuit next Monday. Bethenny is just the latest venture in a mushrooming empire that includes liquor, fashion, and nutrition lines, as well as best-selling fiction and nonfiction books. How did Frankel leverage her exposure on reality — a format that is generally considered flash-in-the-pan and credibility-sinking — to earn hundreds of millions of dollars? Could she have done it on her own? EW reached out to business and marketing experts, as well as reality TV vets, to discover what it is that has taken Frankel from practically penniless to the Skinnygirl. READ FULL STORY »

Tonight marks the fourth season premiere of The Real Housewives of New Jersey. The reality show has introduced us to some of the mid-Atlantic’s most colorful characters, from fiercely protective big sister and mother Caroline Manzo to Fabulicious! table flipper Teresa Giudice (still a contender on this season of The Celebrity Apprentice) and even Cop Without a Badge heroine Danielle Staub. But these ladies aren’t all that Jersey has to offer. The Garden State has been fertile ground for great fictional characters in pop culture. Below, we run down five of our favorite Jersey-born-and-bred characters. (Sorry, Shore fans! Snooki doesn’t technically count as a fictional character.)

'GCB' gets reality knock-off, now let's turn the tables: Which reality show should go scripted?

gcb-recap

Word came down the pipe today (via TMZ) that the producers behind the Gremlin-like Real Housewives franchise are seeking out good Christian… uh… ladies for a reality series based on ABC’s GCB. In the era of reality proliferation, it’s become a go-to to rip off the hard work of TV writers and reproduce their ideas cheaply by training the lens on a coterie of overindulged, under-restrained aspiring singers and actresses. Indeed, it’s exactly how Real Housewives was born: the small-screen version of Athena springing from the head of Zeus, only replace the goddess of wisdom with Vicki Gunvalson and Zeus with Teri Hatcher naked in a bush. But what about turning the tables? Wouldn’t it be exciting to see a reality show milked for all its dramatic potential in the scripted world? Below, I offer up a few suggestions, then you can chip in your own in the comments. READ FULL STORY »

'Saturday Night Live': 'Real Housewives of Disney' deleted scenes has everyone, even LiLo, smiling

If there’s silver lining to be found in the failed attempt for a Lindsay Lohan comeback by hosting an otherwise terrible episode of Saturday Night Live, it was that popular “Real Housewives of Disney” sketch. The inspired bit imagined what classic Disney princesses (and an ambiguously gay prince) would do to one another on The Real Housewives. Turns out, it’s exactly the same as the real boys and girls do in the franchise. It was easily the episode’s — and Lohan’s — rare high point.

But there was a lot that hit the cutting room floor! Check out newly released bonus footage, and find out the real truth as to why Mulan wasn’t invited, below.

In a departure from her club-thumping first three tracks, Zolciak is going in a softer gentler direction with a new ballad called “Love Me First.” It’s a testament to how much marriage and a toddler have calmed down the lady who used to change clothes in gas station parking lots.
