PopWatch Planner: The Super Bowl, the Grammys, and the return of 'Community'

51st Annual Grammy Awards - Show

Kevin Winter/Getty Images

Once a year, America puts aside its preference for tasteful understatement and simple pleasures to celebrate everything that is good and loud about sports, television, violence, capitalism, and patriotism. It’s called the Super Bowl — a super… bowl — the clumsy but perfectly christened title for an American manufactured spectacular. The Ravens meet the 49ers tonight in New Orleans, but regardless of the outcome, the commercials will be analyzed, the enormous television audience will be documented, and the buffalo wings will be picked clean.

Check out our other picks for the week below and tell us what you’re watching. Have a great week!

SUNDAY
Super Bowl XLVII, CBS, 6:30 p.m.

The Baltimore Ravens will face off against the San Francisco 49ers in the most-watched television event of the year. More than 100 million viewers will likely tune in to see which Harbaugh brother will hoist the Lombardi Trophy, to watch Beyoncé perform at halftime, and, of course, to see all the dazzling 30-second commercials that companies shelled out $4 million to air. (That’s $133,333 per second.) READ FULL STORY »

PopWatch Planner: 'Django Unchained' versus 'Les Miserables'

Django-Leo

The holidays are a welcome gift for overworked PopWatchers. Now is the time to catch up on all those movies the critics have already crowned Oscar contenders, or marathon a TV show on Blu-ray before the new season kicks in — Downton Abbey season 3 starts Jan. 6! — or simply track down a show you’ve been reading great things about. In the theater, Quentin Tarantino’s bloody Django Unchained, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a sadistic villain, promises to be a jolly good time when it premieres on Christmas Day. Let’s put him on the Naughty list.

Check out what else is stuffed in this week’s PopWatch stocking.

SUNDAY, Dec. 23

Meet the Press, NBC, check local listings

In his defiant press conference on Friday, National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre blamed the media for last week’s school massacre in Newtown, Conn., and suggested that American schools should have armed guards. Since he didn’t answer any questions, his sitdown with David Gregory on Sunday morning’s most hallowed political talkshow takes on even greater interest and will most certainly set the political agenda for the week ahead. PopWatch Planner: 'Homeland' is back! Plus '30 Rock,' 'Steel Magnolias,' and more

The opening days of fall TV season are always exciting — catching up with our favorites from last season and discovering new must-see gems. If last week was any indication, our DVRs are going to be overloaded for the next few months. This week brings new episodes of the Showtime hit Homeland, a music fest to rock out to in your living room, a groundbreaking PBS documentary, James Bond himself on SNL, and the well-cast all-black rendition of Steel Magnolias on Lifetime. Have a great week!

SUNDAY
Homeland, Showtime 10 p.m.

FINALLY. If you’re as excited as we are about the return of the freshly Emmy-crowned Homeland, get ready for tonight’s premiere. We left off with Brody, the POW-turned-traitor/vigilante nearly blowing up the vice president and Carrie seeking electric-shock treatment for bipolar disorder. Will Carrie’s suspicions about Brody be proven in season 2?

MONDAY
iHeartRadio music festival, CW, 8 p.m.

The Las Vegas pop-music fest to end all pop-music fests, which was held in Sin City Sept. 21-22, will be broadcast as the CW’s kickoff to the fall TV season. The concert featured antics from guitar-smashing by Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong to Flavor Flav mixing up Miley Cyrus and Gwen Stefani, plus performances by No Doubt, Usher, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, and many more.

TUESDAY
Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide , PBS, 9 p.m.

The second half of PBS’ groundbreaking four-hour documentary follows the authors of Half the Sky, New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof and his wife Sheryl WuDunn, around the world exploring women and oppression through stories of hope and success. Hollywood stars including Meg Ryan, America Ferrera, Diane Lane, and Eva Mendes joined the authors on their journey and the result is this film, accompanied by a social-media effort and educational programs.

WEDNESDAY
First Presidential Debate, all major networks, 9 p.m.

President Barack Obama will face off against Republican candidate Mitt Romney at the University of Denver. PBS’ Jim Lehrer will moderate, asking questions that will focus on domestic policy. Expect more than a few zingers from both sides on hot-button issues like healthcare and immigration.

THURSDAY
30 Rock season premiere, NBC, 8 p.m.

30 Rock’s bittersweet seventh and final season starts with an episode titled “The Beginning of the End,” but don’t get nostalgic just yet — Liz and Jack haven’t lost an ounce of chemistry. Check out an exclusive clip from this week’s episode.

FRIDAY
Paperboy, Frankenweenie open in theaters

With this weekend’s success of Looper at the box office and a number of Oscar buzz-worthy movies on their way in the next month or so, things finally seem to be picking up for the studios. This week, check out the wacky, talked-about-for-one-certain-scene effort from Lee Daniels, Paperboy, starring Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron. For the kids (and grown up ones), Tim Burton’s animated Frankenweenie also opens Friday.

SATURDAY
Saturday Night Live, NBC, 11:35 p.m.

Bond, James Bond is hosting SNL this week, so shake yourself a martini and settle in for a late night full of Brits, with Daniel Craig and musical guest Muse. Hot off their Olympics song and with a new album out this week, Muse is sure to rock the SNL set and Craig is only a little over a month away from the latest Bond release, Skyfall.

SUNDAY
Steel Magnolias, Lifetime, 9 p.m.

The 1989 weepie, which starred Julia Roberts, Sally Field, and Dolly Parton, among others, about the intertwining lives of six female friends in Louisiana gets a makeover on Lifetime this weekend with an all-African American cast, including Queen Latifa and Phylisha Rashad. The made-for-TV reboot is produced by Oscar broadcast producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron and directed by Kenny Leon.

PopWatch Planner: The Emmys, 'Looper,' and 'The Avengers' Blu-ray

jimmy-kimmel

The Emmys are meant to honor the best of the best at the conclusion of a television season, but from a PopWatch Planner point of view, tonight’s ceremony, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, is the ideal kick-off for a week of much-anticipated television premieres. Now only do some old favorites return  — Modern Family, Dancing With the Stars — but we finally get to peek at some of the most promising new shows. (I’m crossing my fingers for Last Resort.)

So you’ll forgive me if this week’s Planner is Boob Tube heavy, but for any true coach potato, this week is Christmas. Make sure your DVR is well-rested, because it will be put to the test every night. (Revenge versus Good Wife…?) These are the days that make Homer Simpson’s words resonate: “Television! Teacher, mother, secret lover.” Be not ashamed.

SUNDAY, SEPT. 23

The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards, ABC, 8 p.m.

Host Jimmy Kimmel has already promised viewers “the biggest prank ever pulled” when he takes the stage at the Nokia Theatre, and he’s also hinted that the event might serve as a reunion for the Handsome Men’s Club. Apparently, there are also awards to be handed out. Will Amy Poehler and Jon Hamm receive their first trophies?

PopWatch Planner: 'Boardwalk' is back. Plus: 'Glee' does Britney (again) and the Emmys!

steve-kelly-party-301

Next Sunday’s Emmys will honor the best in TV, but to keep you going until then, one of the most-nominated shows is back in business when Boardwalk Empire season 3 premieres on HBO Sunday night. Gangsters in all forms are taking center stage this week, from aforementioned Prohibition-era Atlantic City, to modern-day Chicago, where My Boys star Jordana Spiro takes on the ailments of the mob in Fox’s The Mob Doctor.

We may be more than a month out from Halloween, but horror flick The Cabin in the Woods will be coming out on DVD this week to get you in the mood. If that’s not scary enough, conquer your fear of updating your iPhone with the Apple iOS 6 release on Wednesday. Luckily, the rest of the week has only fun things in store: Another Britney episode on Glee, a baseball movie for the end of summer, and JGL on SNL. Have a great one!

SUNDAY, SEPT. 16
Boardwalk Empire season premiere, HBO, 9 p.m.

Put on your flapper dress and settle in for the first hour of the new season, which starts off at the beginning of 1923. What will Jimmy’s (Michael Pitt) death mean for the leadership of the Boardwalk? Will Margaret’s (Kelly MacDonald) deal with the church be the beginning of the end for her and Nucky (Steve Buschemi)? Check out clips from the new season hereREAD FULL STORY »

PopWatch Planner: 'Breaking Bad,' President Obama, and NFL football

obama

President Obama and the Democrats get their chance to respond to last week’s Republican convention, as their own three-night infomercial kicks off Tuesday night in Charlotte. The Republicans had to deal with a hurricane that spared Tampa but flooded the Gulf Coast. The Democrats have their own sideshow problems: The NFL season kicks off Wednesday night.

If you’re already conventioned out, and the first blitz of football fever makes you twitch, there’s still plenty of top-notch entertainment to consume, beginning with tonight’s Breaking Bad and culminating with the premiere-packed opening weekend at the Toronto Film Festival. READ FULL STORY »
