The past week bore witness to two bold stances that made for a pair of controversial covers. President Barack Obama took a historic stand on the issue of same-sex marriage, telling ABC’s Robin Roberts, “I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married.” Personal politics were also brought to the forefront on a Time cover that showed one mother breastfeeding her 3-year-old son. POLL: 'American Horror Story': Is Violet dead?
If you’ve read Tim Stack’s post-episode convo with Ryan Murphy (if not, GO NOW!), then you know that next week will answer one of the many many questions that have been swirling in our heads for a while: Is Violet dead?
Since we know we’re about to get closure on the issue, it seems like the perfect time to choose a side and make an official prediction — hence the poll you’ve been promised. But first, let’s chat properly about this. READ FULL STORY »
Kelsey Grammer talks love on 'Regis & Kelly'; Camille Grammer to talk divorce on 'Housewives.' Who's on top?
In one corner: Kelsey Grammer, A(ish)-list Hollywood star, appearing on Regis & Kelly to talk about his cross-country honeymoon road trip with 29-year-old fiancée Kayte Walsh, and his love for his new lady. Except from the interview: “Somebody came and saw [La Cage aux Folles] several months into it and said to me, ‘You know what the show did for me today?’ She said, ‘It made me want more love in my life.’ And I suddenly realized that she expressed exactly how I felt. I’m not making any kind of suggestion about my past or anything else, I’m just saying what’s happened since I started in this La Cage thing is — this year’s journey has been about to sort of enhancing love in my life.” (By reluctantly kissing your future ex-wife on camera at the Tonys while your future fiancée hangs out in your apartment? I’ll say that’s enhancing!) See video of the interview here.
In the other corner: Camille Grammer, C-list reality star, appearing on a two-hour Real Housewives of Beverly Hills reunion to undoubtedly talk about her divorce from Kelsey — which was chronicled on the show — but mostly to squabble about like meaningless things “insecurities,” “bullying,” and “lives.”
Who wins the televised battle of the exes?
'Degrassi' stars Lauren Collins and Adamo Ruggiero's PopWatch Duel: What's the best fictional high school?
Proof that “the college years” aren’t the kiss of death for every TV show, Degrassi: The Next Generation managed to let its characters grow up without going stale. But the teen-oriented series couldn’t follow Paige, Ellie, Manny, Emma, Marco, Jimmy, Craig, and Ashley forever, and we’d seen them through so much. (Seriously: so much!) So Degrassi did what it does — you know, “go there” — and introduced a whole crop of younger, new characters, with new problems to be dealt with in straightforward but often awkward ways. Such is life, you guys.
But as a hardcore D:TNG fan, I missed the old gang. Imagine my delight when word of a two-hour movie surface, my increasing delight to find out it’s awesome, and then the total joy-induced apoplexy when none other than Lauren Collins and Adama Ruggiero — Paige and Marco, OMG — swung by PopWatch HQ. Read on for their PopWatch Duel on what the best TV high school is and for a behind-the-scenes clip of Degrassi Goes Hollywood, which debuts tonight. READ FULL STORY »
'Drop Dead Diva' stars debate the best TV shows for women
What are the best TV shows for women? That’s the question we posed to Brooke Elliott and Margaret Cho, stars of Lifetime’s addictive new summer hit Drop Dead Diva (Sundays, 9 p.m. ET), for the latest installment of the PopWatch Duel. They’ve made their lists. Now you decide whose is better by casting a vote in the poll. (Then they’ll try to tell themselves that they don’t care who wins. But come on, just look at those faces. They care!)
Feel free to justify your choice — and/or you love for DDD (we’re right there with you, guilt-free) — in the comments section. And, of course, submit your own Top 5. READ FULL STORY »
'My Boys' stars Jordana Spiro and Kyle Howard on TV's Five Best Love Triangles: PopWatch Duel
With tonight’s return of TBS’ comedy My Boys (10:30 p.m. ET) comes the return of the PopWatch Duel. We asked stars Jordana Spiro (P.J.) and Kyle Howard (Bobby, last seen the night before his wedding telling P.J. that he might be marrying the wrong woman…) to each list TV’s Five Best Love Triangles. You decide whose list is better by voting in the poll. (Then feel free to comment on their picks or submit your own.) They try to tell themselves that they don’t care who wins.
Jordana Spiro’s Five Best TV Love Triangles:
1. Katie Couric, Sarah Palin, Tina Fey: I’m hoping Katie keeps the right one.
2. Flavor of Love: Flavor Flav, New York, and the spit girl. One of the few guilty pleasures I’ll admit to in print.
3. Who’s the Boss: Mona, Tony, and Angela. She hung around a lot for a grandmother.
4. The Facts of Life: All the girls from The Facts of Life. You know something was going on.
5. Friends: Ross, Rachel, and his monkey.
Kyle Howard’s Five Best TV Love Triangles:
1. Lost: Jack, Kate, and Sawyer. Yet another brilliant element of one of TV’s most brilliant shows.
2. Friends: Rachel, Ross, and Emily. How could Rachel and Ross’ 10 years of beating around the bush not go down in history as one of TV’s greatest love fests?!
3. The Office: Jim, Pam, and Roy. From episode 1 of The Office we thought how can Jim and Pam NOT be together. Now all is right in the world, but they had to make us wait for it!
4. Dawson’s Creek: Dawson, Joey, and Pacey. When it comes to TV, I’m a pretty contemporary man, so we’ll consider this my "throwback."
5. Sex and the City: Carrie, Big, and Aidan. I’m slightly embarrassed to reference this show but EVERY girlfriend I’ve EVER had has loved them some SATC.
Vote now! After the jump, catch up on My Boys in four minutes.
PopWatch Duel: 10 Items or Less' John Lehr vs. Kim Coles
Define your sense of humor in 10 items or less. That’s the order we gave John Lehr, co-creator and star of TBS’ late-night comedy 10 Items or Less, and Kim Coles (In Living Color), who joins the series for its third season (premieres Jan. 6, 11 p.m). On the show, they’ll be each other’s nemesis — he’s Leslie Pool, the inept manager of the family-run Greens & Grains Grocery Store; she’s Mercedes "Mercy" P. Jones, the new manager of the rival SuperValueMart across the street. Here in the land of the PopWatch Duel… well, nothing’s different. We’ve bagged their responses. You decide whose list is better by casting a vote in the comments section. They try to tell themselves that they don’t care who wins.
It’s on, after the jump.
PopWatch Duel: Leverage's Christian Kane vs. Gina Bellman
Name five things in Hollywood you’d like to steal. That’s the assignment we gave Christian Kane (Angel) and Gina Bellman (the British Coupling), costars of TNT’s new caper series, Leverage (premieres Dec. 7 at 10 p.m.; read Ken Tucker’s review here). On the show, they play for the same team: a group of grifters, hackers, and thieves commanded by Oscar winner Timothy Hutton. But in the land of the PopWatch Duel, it’s every actor for him/herself. What’s the plan? We’ve nabbed their responses. You decide whose list is better by casting a vote in the comments section. They try to tell themselves that they don’t care who wins.
It’s on, after the jump.
PopWatch Duel: Jonas Brothers vs. Pete Wentz
En garde! Yes, indeed, it’s time for another round of PopWatch Duel! For those new to the sport, here’s the skinny: we ask celebs for their top picks on a particular topic. Then you head to the comments section and declare which participant has the better list. Easy, breezy, and no one gets hurt.(Unless you count wounded pride.)
We recently caught up with the Jonas Brothers and Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz on the set of FNMTV (Fridays, 8 p.m. ET/PT, MTV), the show that’s out to save the endangered species known as the music video. In case you missed last Friday’s show, let me fill you in on some big news: This year, not only are the Jonas Brothers performing live during their first ever MTV Video Music Awards appearance, but this year also marks the first time in VMA history that fans will have the chance to vote for the nominees.
And speaking of voting, let’s get back to the duel. We asked the Jonas Brothers and Wentz to each name their five favorite music videos. Yeah, our battle pits three against one, but then again, Kevin, Joe, and Nick all had to agree on the same five selections — no easy task. Check out the dueling countdowns, then vote for the winner, after the jump…
PopWatch Duel: 'MythBusters" Adam Savage vs. Jamie Hyneman
PopWatch Duel has a return engagement this week. You remember how this works: We ask two people fortheir picks on a certain topic. You decide whose list is better bycasting avote in the comments section. They try to tell themselves that theydon’t care who wins.
In honor of their new two-hour MythBusters: Shark Special (kicking off Discovery’s Shark Week July 27, at 9 p.m. ET) — and the run of 11 new MythBusters episodes beginning Aug. 6 (Wednesdays, 9 p.m. ET) — we asked Adam Savage (pictured, left) and Jamie Hyneman (pictured, right) to suspend disbelief long enough to name The Five Best Special Effects Scenes.
Class is in session after the jump.
