Tom Cruise doing 'Mission Impossible 4': Are you ready to love again?

It’s no secret that the public perception of Tom Cruise seems to morph more often than Lady Gaga’s outerwear. So now that he’s signed on for yet another Mission: Impossible sequel, it’s worth taking a quick look at what’s transpired in Tommy’s World since the last MI movie released back in 2006.

On one side of the coin, the last few years have been hard on his public image: He and Katie Holmes’ relationship has only gotten bigger and crazier, inviting ridicule from fans and press. There’s also his continued relationship with Scientology, which never seems to become a moot point. Plus, those crazy videos. And finally, and perhaps most importantly, his recent movies Lions for Lambs and Valkyrie, frankly, underwhelmed.

On the flip side, however, Cruise has managed to rehab his image a bit as well: A surprisingly funny turn in 2008′s Tropic Thunder, which got raves; a funny roast of Matt Lauer; and his and Holmes’ lil’ tyke, Suri — well, I think the goodwill for her cuteness has spread to Mr. Cruise himself.

So, all you former/current Tom Cruise/Mission: Impossible fans: Are you ready to love him again? Could Mission: Impossible IV be the movie that brings you back into the Cruise fold? Are you willing to put his past aside and embrace what could possibly be another great movie from him and J.J. Abrams? Sound off in the comments below!

'RuPaul's Drag Race' recap: Talent wins over charisma this week

My favorite moment of last night’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race revolves around this quote from RuPaul herself: “Tatianna, that’s an answer for the Miss America contest—not the RuPaul Drag Race contest.” Zing!

Sitting at the judges’ table, the drag superstar host had just asked Tatianna who from Team Pandora Boxx deserved to go home after losing the burlesque challenge. And, while everyone else on the team was saying that Tatianna herself should take her high heels back to the streets and leave the Drag Race womb, Tatianna decided to go allllll kinds of PC with her answer, picking the increasingly adorable Morgan McMichaels because “she has immunity.” No, no, no. Finger wag! Bad idea. Because then came the aforementioned head-thump from RuPaul. We don’t play that way here at Drag Race, RuPaul scolded, telling the (truly sweet) Tatianna how things work. Leno-Letterman-Oprah Super Bowl commercial: Who came out of it looking the best?

Last night on the Jay Leno Show, Leno addressed his and David Letterman’s (and Oprah’s!) surprise Super Bowl promo for The Late Show. (Our esteemed Ken Tucker blogged all about it.) We’re still talking about the ad around the office, in part because we’re all trying to figure out one crucial thing: Who came out of it looking the best? It was quite a coup all around, as our colleague Lynette Rice’s reporting attests, but there was one quote in particular she got from Letterman producer Rob Burnett that has stuck with me since I read her interview with him. At one point, Burnett quotes Leno as saying, “This is the way show business should be.” It seems to get at an essential truth at the heart of all this late-night mess: That no matter what’s going on between the personalities involved, in the end, the true pros will put anything aside for the sake of a good bit. That Letterman, Leno, (and Oprah!) got that immediately speaks well of them, I think, as entertainers. Who do you think came off looking the best? Did it rehab Jay in your minds?

'RuPaul's Drag Race': Werq it out with the Dragulator!

Recently it came to light that you could Jerzify Yourself. Which was fun for, like, a hot beach second. But screw that spray tan-and-trucker cap shizzle because now you can Dragulate yourself with Logo and RuPaul’s Drag Race’s Dragulator. Werq it out, boys and girls! Like I did. (See: left.)

I mean, to be honest, this isn’t that much of a stretch for me, since I’ve taken this plunge in a much more literal way before. But just look at the difference from the inset photo that I started with! From just fine to super fab…in about five minutes! PopWatchers: Meet my drag alter ego, the magnificent Desi von Bumpit. Tiara, pink wig, double door-knockers, and all.

One of the hilarious aspects of the Dragulator is that it honestly doesn’t matter what photo you start with because by the time you layer on all that accoutro, by the end you can’t tell what’s underneath anyway. (Secret: That’s the beauty of drag for you!) READ FULL STORY »

Madonna and Beyoncé join 'Hope for Haiti Now': This telethon is now totally unavoidable

I generally don’t get into telethons. I mean, if I’m going to give, I’m just going to give—I don’t need a cheesy Regis Philbin or whoever trying to cajole me into donating dollars while Howie Mandel demonstrates how many different ways he can wash his hands and Goldie Hawn revives a forgettable sketch from Laugh-In.

But I must say: This Hope for Haiti Now telethon tonight is sounding like something that I can’t miss, especially now that divas extraordinaire Beyoncé and Madonna have come on board. Looks like B is gonna hit the stage in London, and M will be in NYC. Yes! Loving it. I’m in. And I’ll probably text in even more money than I already have.

In case you were wondering, those already slated to perform tonight at 8 p.m. on nearly ever network include Christina Aguilera, Taylor Swift, Stevie Wonder, Justin Timberlake, Mary J., J-Hud, and Bruce Springsteen. Pretty A-list, clearly.

But what about you, PopWatchers? Does the prospect of Beyoncé and Madonna on screen entice you to tune in tonight? Will it entice you to give more money — or just enjoy the performances without forking over any dough? Were there other artists that immediately made tonight’s telethon a must watch/must give?

'The Jay Leno Show': What should replace it at 10 p.m.?

Rumors continue to fly, but it looks like NBC is going to pull back on its big experiment with putting The Jay Leno Show at 10 p.m. and move the former Tonight Show host back to 11:35 p.m. At least, that’s the word on the street right now. The chain reaction would likely move Conan O’Brien’s The Tonight Show back to 12:05 a.m. and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon would shift to 1:05 a.m.

All this could be happening as soon as March, as a post-Olympics present. But, the question remains: What’ll fill those five hours of programming that Leno leaves behind? There are lots of options, ranging from reality programming that NBC may be sitting on to more Dateline to reruns of shows on the network or the network’s sister cable channels. If you had to pick from those, oh viewer, what would you want to see at 10 p.m. on NBC (at least until the network can get some dramas into production)? Tell us in our poll below!

Katy Perry and Russell Brand: Bring on the duets!

Now that the rumors have been confirmed that Katy Perry and her comic boyfriend Russell Brand are engaged, two thoughts come to mind:

1. For the woman who loves dressing up like dice and carousels, what will her wedding dress look like? Well, let’s hope it isn’t this one.

2. I never liked Russell Brand as MTV awards host, but what I did love was the hilarious ditty “Inside of You” that he sang in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Will the couple ever duet?

A purposely legitimate song with these two singing could be a tragic, cheesy mess. But a funny YouTube spoof song? As long as it’s not like this, I’ll take it.

While we wait, let’s reminisce about Brand’s musicality, shall we?

Does a duet between Perry and Brand seem inevitable? What song should they duet to for their first track?
