Emmys 2013: Neil Patrick Harris cuts loose in 'The Number in the Middle of the Show' -- VIDEO

And there it is.

EW knew host Neil Patrick Harris wouldn’t open tonight’s show with a big, splashy musical number. (How did we know? Because he told us so.) Still, we couldn’t help hoping that he’d still strap on his dancing shoes at some point — and finally, at the midpoint of tonight’s telecast, NPH did just that.

The song, appropriately enough, was called “The Number in the Middle of the Show.” And while it was definitely “fairly arbitrary” — NPH’s words, not ours — the bit still deserves points for getting Harris moving — as well as for pairing him with pinch-hitters Nathan Fillion and Sarah Silverman. Watch their shenanigans below:

When the Bard met Joss Whedon: Watch the first trailer for 'Much Ado About Nothing'

Joss Whedon, a man who in his time has played many parts, has another piece of entertainment about to be unleashed on the stage world, but this time it’s not a special effects-laden superhero movie or an uber-meta horror flick. His latest project is a film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, shot on a shoestring budget in Whedon’s own Santa Monica, Calif. home during what was supposed to be his post-Avengers “vacation.” The first trailer for Much Ado hit the web today.

The black-and-white film gets a jazzy treatment (with St. Germain’s “Rose Rouge”) in the trailer that crescendos into a rather intense, soapy feel considering this is a comedy — words like “Obsession,” “Power” and “Deception” flash across the screen toward the preview’s end. Many faces familiar to fans of the Whedonverse make an appearance, including Nathan Fillion (Firefly), Fran Kranz (Dollhouse, Cabin in the Woods) and Clark Gregg (Avengers). The quick-witted couple at the play’s center, Beatrice and Benedick, are played Amy Acker (Angel, Cabin in the Woods) and Alexis Denisof (Buffy the Vampire SlayerAngelDollhouse).

'Firefly: Browncoats Unite' reunion tonight: Why Joss Whedon's cult classic has endured for a decade

firefly-nathan-fillion.jpg

Some television shows blaze bright and fade quickly. Others ignite and burn for years. Joss Whedon’s Firefly did neither. The sci-fi opus barely sparked during its 11-episode run on Fox in 2002, yet produced a uniquely vibrant afterglow, nurtured by stalwart fans, as well as new fans who continue to discover the series on DVD and cable. To celebrate the cult classic’s 10-year anniversary, Science will air a reunion special tonight called Firefly: Browncoats Unite, which brings together Nathan Fillion, Adam Baldwin, Summer Glau, and more for a conversation (moderated by this reporter) about the show’s origins and legacy and where the series might have gone had it continued.
