Backstreet's back -- for real this time! -- with GMA appearance: VIDEO

I know what you’re thinking: “Didn’t the Backstreet Boys, like, just reunite? And do a concert tour with New Kids on the Block? EW’s Sandra Gonzalez wrote a great review of it last summer? That did happen, right?”

Yes, Cam Jansen, you’re partially correct; the Boys were back in town last year, “town” here being another word for “arenas around the country.” But the BSB that teamed up with NKOTB wasn’t complete: Kevin Richardson, the group’s oldest member, left the guys six years ago to pursue a solo goatee-growing career. This April, Kevin announced that he’d be rejoining his old posse — meaning that the concert BSB performed on Good Morning America a few hours ago was the band’s real reunion show.

Ryan Lochte is 'kinda happy' Prince Harry didn't invite him to play strip pool: VIDEO

After making headlines in Sin City, Ryan Lochte is in New York City today for appearances on Today and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Matt Lauer grilled him this morning on his recent race with Prince Harry in a Las Vegas pool. “His people came over to my table and said, Hey, Prince Harry wants to meet you,’” Lochte says. “I was like, ‘Alright, yeah, let’s go meet him.’ So I went over there, met him. I was, like, fully clothed, so was he. He was like, ‘Hey, you want to do somethin’?’ I was like, ‘What?’ He was like, ‘You want to race me in the pool?’ I was like, ‘Alright, let’s go.’ I just took off my shirt, and we jumped in, and we just started racing.” READ FULL STORY »

It's 'The Hardest Thing' not to swoon at 98 Degrees' 'Today' show reunion

A long, long time ago, when Carson Daly reigned over TRL and Texas Tuxedos were a valid red carpet choice, casual observers couldn’t be blamed for thinking there were only two major boy bands: the sophisticated, polished Backstreet Boys and their slightly wackier arch-rival, *NSYNC. But discerning connoisseurs knew that there was a third option, the Mandy Moore to Backstreet’s Britney and *NSYNC’s Christina, if you will, the Vanessa Carlton to their Michelle Branch and Avril Lavigne.

I’m talking, of course, about 98 Degrees, a group that stood apart for a variety of reasons. First of all, 98 Degrees wasn’t scientifically created in a lab by creepy Lou Pearlman — the band’s members actually knew each other before they started working together, and the group formed independently before getting signed to a label. Secondly, 98 Degrees had four members. Four! Not five! Very different.

Though the group hasn’t released an album since 2002, its members have said for the past 10 years that 98 Degrees hasn’t gone cold — it’s just on an extended hiatus. That hiatus finally ended this morning, when the band reunited on Today. How stoked were they to be back together? “Well, now that we’ve gone through puberty, finally, we’re very excited,” front man Nick Lachey said with a straight face. Swoon!

Did Al Roker just slam Matt Lauer on 'Today'?

Today’s most awkward live TV moment of the day is brought to you by Al Roker on Today. The jokester of the bunch made a slight jab at host Matt Lauer about throwing teammates “under the bus” as Ann Curry’s replacement Savannah Guthrie chuckled awkwardly. Oh, no he didn’t!

It all went down as the gang was interviewing the U.S. women’s rowing team about celebrating their Olympic victory. (TMZ has the clip.) Lauer told rower Mary Whipple that the tradition in New York is to throw winners in the Hudson River. Roker then jumped in (as the interview was wrapping up) with, ”Which is different in our tradition, which is to throw one of us under the bus. That’s another story.”

The remark seemed innocent enough, but it received a semi-stern ”Mr. Roker!” from Lauer and Guthrie. This came on the heels of a slightly more awkward Today segment on Thursday during Curry’s first show appearance since her demotion earlier this summer. Curry stonewalled Lauer’s attempts at small talk and was all business during the reunion.

Robert Pattinson on 'GMA': 'I'd like my fans to know... '

Robert Pattinson appeared on Good Morning America today to give his second post-KStew interview — and, once again, he got through the proceedings without directly speaking about the scandal. Pattinson appeared a bit more relaxed when chatting with George Stephanopoulos than he did Monday night on The Daily Show. But the heartthrob still stammered and squirmed a bit when Stephanopoulos asked about his personal life, even though She Who Must Not Be Named was never invoked directly.

Stephanopoulos began by taking a leaf out of Jon Stewart’s book, offering Pattinson some comfort food — in this case, a big box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, which is Pattinson’s favorite — before getting down to the nitty gritty. “Everybody just wants to know, how are you doing?” the GMA host asked. “And what do you want your fans to know about your personal life?”

Pattinson took a fortifying sip from his mug before giving his answer: “You know, they seem pretty excited about… whatever,” he said with a grin, indicating the throngs outside the GMA studio with a tip of his head. “I’d like my fans to know that… Cinnamon Toast Crunch only has 30 calories a bowl in it, for instance,” he continued. “Pretty much everything that comes out of my mouth is irrelevant.”

Lolo Jones tears up on 'Today,' says the 'New York Times' 'ripped me to shreds'

“Judging from this year’s performances, Lolo Jones seems to have only a slim chance of winning an Olympic medal in the 100-meter hurdles and almost no possibility of winning gold.”

Ouch. That’s the opening sentence of Saturday’s 1,000-word New York Times article on Jones, which went on to complain that the Olympic track and field athlete “has played into the persistent, demeaning notion that women are worthy as athletes only if they have sex appeal,” then quotes a professor who compares Jones to Anna Kournikova, “the former Russian tennis player whose looks received far more attention than her relatively meager skills.”

The critical piece was published just a few days before Jones competed in the women’s 100-meter hurdle race. Last night, she placed a disappointing fourth — and as the runner told Today‘s Savannah Guthrie this morning, the Times story only added insult to injury.

Mars rover celebration is way better than most movies about Mars

If you need a minute-long Monday morning pick-me-up, you can’t do much better than this video of NASA employees totally flipping out. They’ve got good reason to be excited: Early this morning, their rover Curiosity successfully touched down on Mars after a dramatic landing involving a supersonic parachute, a sky crane, and an incredibly cool space jetpack (I know, redundant). If Curiosity hadn’t stuck it like McKayla Maroney, a cash-strapped NASA would have been dealt a devastating blow. Instead, the agency is on track to potentially discover whether the Red Planet ever supported life.

So yeah, the video’s pretty awesome… especially compared to recent high-profile Hollywood failures set on our celestial neighbor. This clip might even be the first step toward fixing Mars’ reputation as box-office poison. Think about it: The Curiosity landing has “Future Ron Howard Movie” written all over it. Add in, say, Robert Downey Jr. as a brilliant but prickly engineer and Emma Stone as his tart-tongued protegee, and this could be bigger than Prometheus — not to mention several times more intelligible. Channing Tatum leads flash(dance) mob on 'Today' -- VIDEO

Okay, technically, he didn’t take off his shirt — he just opened it to reveal a Magic Mike tank — but the flash mob Channing Tatum led on Today this morning was still a great way to start our Wednesday. Kathie Lee's Martin Short gaffe: Worse than her James Taylor blunder, or when she made a kid cry?

By now, you probably know the story: Martin Short appeared on the fourth hour of Today yesterday to promote Madagascar 3. Partway through his conversation with co-anchors Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford, Gifford jovially asked Short to talk about his marriage — apparently unaware that Short’s wife, actress Nancy Dolman, died of ovarian cancer in 2010. The former SNL star took Gifford’s clueless questions in stride, even though his heart must have been breaking… especially when Gifford went on to ask if he and Dolman were still in love, or how they make each other laugh. Eeeesh.

In hindsight, it was a supremely uncomfortable exchange — but it might not be Gifford’s worst-ever onscreen gaffe. In 1997, Gifford made a similar blunder while chatting with guest James Taylor on her old show with Regis Philbin. She asked the musician how his older brother Alex was doing; “I wish I could say he was doing well,” Taylor replied. “Alex died about four years ago.”  READ FULL STORY »

Howard Stern's preening 'Today' and 'Late Night' interviews: 'People adore me' -- VIDEO

Howard Stern knows what you think about him becoming a judge on America’s Got Talent — and that’s because he thinks it too. “What a crazy idea to put me on a family show!” he told Matt Lauer jovially on Today this morning. “Somebody at NBC should be fired for that, right?”

But in between reveling in his own controversial nature, ribbing Lauer — at one point he suggested the Today anchor was on crack — and lobbing barbed quips (“I liked when Al Roker was fat better. It’s like, put a pin in him!”), Stern proved that he might just be what reality television needs.

“You know, I watch American Idol sometimes, and those three judges, they don’t have a word of criticism,” Stern told Lauer. “And I think that’s selfish. I think you owe it to the contestants to offer criticism.”

Stern promised to be both compassionate and honest on the talent competition — sort of like a slightly more approachable Simon Cowell.
