As a gay American man, there are certain moments in recent history that will stand out to me. I remember exactly where I was when the Sports Illustrated cover story on Jason Collins came out last year, along with his own sexuality as the first major active American athlete to do so. And I will never forget the moment when the Defense of Marriage Act was struck down by the Supreme Court a couple of months later. Saturday marked another triumphant moment in LGBT cultural history, as Michael Sam became the first openly gay player drafted into the NFL. Where was I? Representing my entire community’s point of view on national television. I guess I should explain. READ FULL STORY
Michael Sam’s reaction to being drafted by the St. Louis Rams on Saturday has pretty much got to be the best reaction ever in the history of the NFL Draft.
For starters, the selection made history: Sam is the first openly gay football player to be drafted by an NFL team. And secondly, the video of Sam receiving the news is a multiple-tissues-worthy expression of happiness and love as he and his boyfriend weep, hold each other, and kiss. Take a look:
Sam was the 249th overall pick in the draft. He was named Southeastern Conference defensive player of the year in the final year of his career at University of Missouri.
President Obama extended his congratulations to Sam, sending this statement through the White House: “From the playing field to the corporate boardroom, LGBT Americans prove everyday that you should be judged by what you do and not who you are.”
Twitter is also pretty excited to see Sam enter the NFL:

Besides the Olympics, the big sports news over the weekend was that Missouri All-American Michael Sam announced he is gay, and, if drafted this spring, the defensive end could become the first openly gay player in the NFL.
“Once I became official to my teammates, I knew who I was,” Sam told the New York Times. “I knew that I was gay. And I knew that I was Michael Sam, who’s a Mizzou football player who happens to be gay. I was so proud of myself and I just didn’t care who knew.”
Since the news broke, many celebs have tweeted out their support. Read the messages below. READ FULL STORY
