'The Butler': The new trailer showcases Oscar-winning actors tackling history -- VIDEO

In The Butler, Forest Whitaker plays Cecil Gaines, who proudly serves tea at the White House to seven U.S. presidents, Democratic and Republican, while the segregated country he grew up in shudders with inevitable — and often violent — progress. Directed by Lee Daniels (Precious) and co-starring Oprah Winfrey as Gaines’ beloved wife, The Butler is based on the true story of Eugene Allen, who came to the White House in 1952 and became a favorite of many of the first families who called 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue home.

The film is loaded with famous faces, and the historical icons they’re playing makes the new trailer impossible not to make some snap judgements about the casting: Robin Williams as Ike! John Cusack as Tricky Dick! READ FULL STORY

UPDATE: Oprah Winfrey parties with Jane Fonda, Alan Rickman as Nancy and Ronald Reagan in 'The Butler' -- PHOTO

What would happen if Oprah Winfrey partied with Nancy and Ronald Reagan? It would hopefully look like the image to the right, which Winfrey posted to Instagram from the set of director Lee Daniels’ The Butler. The film is based on the life of Eugene Allen (played by Forest Whitaker), a man who worked at the White House through eight presidencies, from Dwight Eisenhower to Ronald Reagan. Winfrey, who plays Whitaker’s wife, captioned this shot: “Director Lee Daniels, Jane Fonda as Nancy Reagan, Alan Rickman as Prez Reagan, and me … gonna be a long nite.” Gotta love that both Fonda and Rickman remain in character.

Daniels has landed an all-star cast to play the famous residents of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. in Washington D.C. in his film. Along with Fonda and Rickman, there’s Robin Williams (President Dwight D. Eisenhower),  Melissa Leo (Mamie Eisenhower), James Marsden (President John F. Kennedy), Minka Kelly (Jackie Kennedy), Liev Schreiber (President Lyndon B. Johnson), and John Cusack (President Richard M. Nixon). The film also boasts several more heavy hitters in non-presidential roles, including Vanessa Redgrave, Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr., Mariah Carey, and Lenny Kravitz.

Robin Williams likes Ike in 'The Butler'

In Good Morning, Vietnam, Robin Williams was nominated for an Oscar for playing a military-radio DJ who often imitated and ridiculed his superiors and America’s political leaders. On one occasion, he pretended to be former President Eisenhower, a characterization that made Ike sound a little like Elmer Fudd.

But in The Butler, the upcoming film from Lee Daniels about Eugene Allen, the late White House butler who served eight presidents, the funnyman is playing the popular WWII general-turned-pol for real. Forest Whitaker is set to star as Allen, with Oprah Winfrey playing his wife. John Cusack (as Richard Nixon), Jane Fonda (as Nancy Reagan), Alan Rickman (as Ronald Reagan), Nelsan Ellis (as Martin Muther King, Jr.), James Marsden and Minka Kelly (as John F. Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy) also appear.
