'Gangnam Style' video without music: Is it art?

Youtube user Moto2h has done what any enterprising fan would do in our digital age: replace the backing music from the Korean pop hit “Gangnam Style” with found sound that replicates the setting. But is it art? Of course that depends on what you consider art. But if Damien Hirst can convince the world a stuffed shark is worth millions of dollars, then this clever little video belongs in the Louvre.

In the reimagined version of “Gangnam Style,” we’re left with Psy, the world’s flavor of the split-second, rapping a cappella and doing his pony dance without the contextual benefit of throbbing synthesizers. So instead of being cheeky and fun, now it’s got the jarring hyper-realism of a Lars Von Trier flick.

Granted, any music video without the music would make the artist look insane. But in the spirit of relevance – “Gangnam Style” has approximately 13 kajillion likes on Youtube – it’s poking fun at what is truly a cultural phenomenon.

Shia LaBeouf will drop acid and drink moonshine, as long as it's for a role

Move over, Daniel Day-Lewis: Shia LaBeouf is taking method acting (and imposing hair growth) to a whole new level.

First, the former Disney Channel star told MTV that he may actually have sex on camera for his role in Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac: “There’s a disclaimer at the top of the script that basically says, ‘We’re doing it for real,’” LaBeouf said. “Anything that is ‘illegal’ will be shot in blurred images. But other than that, everything is happening… It’s going to be a wild movie, man. It’s going to be a wild movie.”

Now the actor says he also went all the way — in a sense — while making both Mob story The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman and bootlegging saga Lawless. LaBeouf told USA Today that he actually got drunk on moonshine while filming Lawless scenes in which his character did the same. Similarly, LaBeouf claims he really dropped acid to prepare for a Necessary Death scene in which his character trips.

“There’s a way to do an acid trip like Harold & Kumar, and there’s a way to be on acid,” the Disturbia star explained. “What I know of acting, Sean Penn actually strapped up to that [electric] chair in Dead Man Walking. These are the guys that I look up to.” He neglected to mention that Penn wasn’t really electrocuted.

Shia LaBeouf implies he may perform real sex in Lars von Trier's next film

Shia LaBeouf already proved he’s not afraid to bare all for the sake of art when he recently went full-frontal for a Sigur Ros music video. So when he signed on two weeks ago for an unspecified role in Nymphomaniac — director Lars von Trier’s latest cinematic provocation about a sexually voracious woman (Charlotte Gainsbourg), which will reportedly be shot in two versions, both explicit and R-rated — eyebrows went up all over Hollywood. Did this mean the Transformers and Indiana Jones 4 star would be performing un-simulated sex on screen?

In a word: Probably. In an interview with MTV News to promote his upcoming film Lawless, LaBeouf said that he would do “whatever is asked” of him by von Trier. “There’s a disclaimer at the top of the script that basically says, ‘We’re doing it for real,’” said LaBeouf, while his Lawless costar Jessica Chastain looked on in amazement. “Anything that is ‘illegal’ will be shot in blurred images. But other than that, everything is happening….It’s going to be a wild movie, man. It’s going to be a wild movie.” Check out the full exchange below:  READ FULL STORY
