Katy Perry celebrates inauguration with her own tiny Aretha Franklin hat

Trust Katy Perry to focus on what’s really important.

Throughout all of Monday’s inaugural hullabaloo — the music! The balls! The music at the balls! — the media somehow failed to focus on the event’s real cause for celebration: Last weekend marked the four-year anniversary of Aretha Franklin wearing her Hat to End All Hats at President Obama’s first inauguration. (Eat your heart out, Princess Beatrice.)

Thankfully, Katy Perry stuck around D.C. after performing at the 2013 Kids Inaugural Concert last Saturday — and on Monday, she honored Aretha’s bodacious bow by wearing a tiny version of it to this year’s Inauguration Day festivities. Here’s photographic evidence:

Katy Perry and autistic tween Jodi DiPiazza perform 'Firework' -- VIDEO

Grab a hankie: Your eyes may get a wee bit misty when you watch the following clip from Comedy Central’s Night of Too Many Stars, a celeb-packed benefit that airs Sunday night.

The annual charity event raises money for autism education programs — programs like the one that helped New York tween Jodi DiPiazza, who was diagnosed with autism shortly after her second birthday. Though Jodi’s parents once feared that their daughter would never speak, she’s now thriving at New York City’s Mannes College The New School for Music Preparatory Division, where she studies piano and voice.

At Night of Too Many Stars, Jodi got the chance to join her idol, Katy Perry, for a performance of Perry’s inspirational hit “Firework.” Their duet is undeniably moving — especially at the end, when Jodi gives Perry a gleeful embrace, then pulls away to pump her tiny fists. The singer was certainly affected by the experience: “I will never forget last night,” she tweeted the day after the taping. “It was the most important moment thus far of what I do.”

John Mayer celebrates 35th birthday with Katy Perry

It seems Katy Perry’s not taking Taylor Swift’s sage advice — she appears to be back together with John Mayer. The two were photographed side-by-side in New York on Tuesday night while celebrating Mayer’s 35th birthday at ABC Kitchen. The musical couple supposedly split in August after a whirlwind courtship lasting all of two months, and I predicted (inaccurately, drat) that he’d hook up with Jennifer Lawrence or Kristen Stewart next. Johnny Wujek on 'ANTM: College Edition,' replacing Mr. Jay, working with Tyra and the advice he got from Katy Perry

America’s Next Top Model returns tonight, and along with a crop of college-aged model hopefuls, we’ll meet Tyra Banks’ all-new inner circle. Fashion publicist Kelly Cutrone, blogger Bryanboy and model Rob Evans replace the deposed judges, while stylist Johnny Wujek — the man behind Katy Perry’s candy-coated stage outfits and over-the-top red carpet ensembles — takes on the role of photo shoot creative consultant.

Wujek talked to EW.com about preparing for his small screen debut (those model looks don’t hurt), working with Tyra, and why he has to beg the judges for spoilers.

Katy Perry and John Mayer split -- who should he break up with next?

Late yesterday, Us Weekly broke the news that Katy Perry and John Mayer had ended their brief, but no doubt passionate, affair. The pair were first reported to be dating in June, and were spotted “all over each other, making out” at a pool party as recently as Aug. 4. Us insisted the romance was “no summer fling,” and we all dared hope that Perry might tame Mayer’s wild heart (or at least his wild locks). Could this be a romance for the ages? Alas, it was not meant to last. (*Cue Inception horn*)

Of course, Perry is not the only victim of Mayer’s serial dating. The singer has been linked to the likes of Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jessica Simpson, Minka Kelly, Jennifer Aniston, and Taylor Swift. (Fun fact: Wikipedia has a whole section dedicated to Mayer’s torrid affairs.) Since Mayer has dated almost every eligible female in Hollywood, it makes it rather difficult to speculate on who could be next — and that much more fun! Let’s give it the old college try, PopWatchers! READ FULL STORY

Kristen Stewart, Justin Bieber, and Snooki read mean tweets about themselves -- VIDEO

Jimmy Kimmel Live! has become a factory for laugh-out-loud segments that have fun at guests’ expenses. Last night was no different. Celebrities including Kristen Stewart, Justin Bieber, and Snooki read nasty tweets about themselves out loud to the camera.

While some of the tweets targeted stars’ careers — James Van Der Beek’s show Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 and Katy Perry’s movie Katy Perry: Part of Me — the funniest ones were personal attacks. Larry King look repulsed as he read, ”Did you know that if you skinned Larry King & ironed out his leather, you could make enough coats to give 1 to every poor child in America?”

Most of the celebs took the insults in stride, but Danny McBride couldn’t quite suppress his anger.

Watch the video below (the segment starts halfway through the clip).

Howard Stern prods Russell Brand about Katy Perry

Russell Brand called in to Howard Stern’s radio show this morning ostensibly to promote Brand X, but Stern was more curious to talk to Brand about his divorce from Katy Perry, which was finalized two days ago.

Much like his appearance on Ellen, Brand seemed determined to take the high road, passing on opportunities to dish on his ex-wife. While the full interview isn’t available online, you can listen to a clip where Brand says, “[Before] we got married, I just thought, ‘I’ve got to marry her, I just love her so much.’ And then we got married and I thought, ‘Okay, this isn’t really working out.’”

MTV reports Brand touched on tabloid rumors that their issues had to do with whether or not to start a family, but didn’t want to give details, saying, “’I don’t want anything to hurt her. She’s younger than me, she’s a young woman and she’s beautiful and she’s sensitive and I care about her deeply.” He also dismissed rumors that her parents (and their religious beliefs) contributed to the end of their relationship. Contrarian Corner: Katy Perry and Taylor Swift are music's mean girls

Katy Perry’s 3-D extravaganza Part of Me hit theaters this week. Obvious self-reflective implications aside, it’s strange that Perry chose this title from her collection because it’s lyrically the least Katy Perry-ish song in her repertoire. “Part of Me” foregoes the whipped-cream-and-rainbows sensibility that so perplexes (and captivates) my colleague Annie Barrett. It speaks of overcoming adversity and seeks self-empowerment. It’s also a hit job.

I’m not here to sift through the dross surrounding Perry’s divorce from Russell Brand. And I can’t fault Perry for documenting the unraveling of the relationship in the documentary — not to do so would be as glossy and inauthentic as one of her lolliprops. Still, it seems this song speaks to a potential directional shift in girl pop that, frankly, is troubling. Perry and her fellow hit-churner Taylor Swift have taken the break-up song to a new level, crucifying their exes publicly — to massive success. It begs the question: When did a few cute girls’ personal burn books turn into the American songbook?  READ FULL STORY
