People's Choice Awards: Katy Perry's out, but will you be in?

Katy Perry tweeted yesterday that she won’t be attending tomorrow night’s People’s Choice Awards. Despite an ultra-successful 2011 that led to seven People’s Choice nominations, it’s been a rough couple weeks for Perry. She officially split from husband Russell Brand on Dec. 30, during a two-week time period when she was abandoned her Twitter feed completely. Personal dramas aside, Perry’s decision to skip this particular awards show brings to light greater implications about the People’s Choice Awards. See why Perry’s no-show matters and register your RSVP after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

Best of 2011: The Year in Memes

After 2011, will the word “occupy” ever mean the same thing to you again? Can you ever deny the omnipotence of Ryan Gosling? (He’s a gentleman and a feminist scholar!) A Californian taxidermist and a Pop Tart-shaped cat with a catchy theme song suddenly had relevance, and everyday folks like you and me suddenly had a chance for a date with the likes of Justin Timberlake.

These are just a sampling of the most memorable memes to overtake the World Wide Web over the last 12 months. We’ve got one for every month. Check them out after the jump! READ FULL STORY »

'Saturday Night Live' host poll: Does Jimmy Fallon shoot right to the top?

The Lord of Late Night: The Return of the King! That was the vibe from last night’s year-end Saturday Night Live, in which Jimmy Fallon fulfilled his destiny and hosted a cameo-filled spectacular. It’s already being hailed as an instant classic, from the moment he groped Amy Poehler’s boob to the seasonal ice-rink farewell. He sang, he danced, he didn’t dance; it was a delight. A Fallon episode might just have to become a new SNL Christmas tradition.

But was he wicked-cool enough to dislodge Melissa McCarthy from the top of our Saturday Night Liveliest Host contest. READ FULL STORY »

Best of 2011: Viral video edition!

The first 10 years of the new millennium brought us Christian the LionAntoine Dodson, and some formerly floppy-haired Canadian kid you may have heard of named Justin Bieber, so how has the first year of this decade shaped up, virally speaking? Well, let’s see… hydrangeas were pronounced hateful (or, to be more accurate, loathsome), Beauty and the Beast got the West Hollywood treatment, a respected newsman collapsed into giggles over a Frenchman’s urine, a teen shot to stardom by serenading a day of the week, and… well, we could go on and on. Instead, we’ve posted all that’s fit to embed over the next several pages. Get ready to lay your emotions bare like the girl in this 2008 viral fave, then click through!

Best of 2011 (Behind the Scenes): Floria Sigismondi on working with Katy Perry on 'E.T.' and 'The One That Got Away'

katy-perry-et-video

As 2011 comes to a close, EW.com wanted to honor some of the hardworking names and faces from behind the scenes for their outstanding achievements. It was a massive year for Katy Perry, and Floria Sigismondi (who has directed iconic videos for Christina Aguilera and Marilyn Manson, as well as 2010′s The Runaways) was no small part of that success. Helming “E.T.” and “The One That Got Away,” two of Perry’s most evocative videos, Sigismondi discussed how she stepped away from Perry’s candy-coated style and see the finished product. For more behind the scenes access to the year’s best TV and movie scenes, click here for EW.com‘s Best of 2011: Behind the Scenes coverage.

As told by: Floria Sigismondi

Normally I get the songs and just live with them for three days to a week and kind of let the concept shape itself. I get inspired by the lyrics and can hopefully bring another layer to the story. I try not to be affected by [an artist's] previous work. I don’t study [other videos of theirs]. I always think that somebody’s coming to me because of something I bring to the table and because I can open up a different view of the artist. Once I have images that I’m ready to put on paper, that’s the biggest challenge as an artist — to get what’s in my mind out into reality. READ FULL STORY »

'Saturday Night Live' host poll: Katy Perry is in, Alec Baldwin is out

Katy Perry was a sparkly treat of a host on this week’s Saturday Night Live, but she was forced to share the spotlight with the likes of Matt Damon, Val Kilmer, and “national treasure” Alec Baldwin. Still, the “I Kissed a Girl” singer, who we now know wrote that song based upon her old volleyball coach, was more than game, nailing a Florence Welch impression, flashing a Jewel of a breast tattoo, and standing up to the Queen as a potty-mouthed Pippa Middleton. But was it enough?

How does she compare to the best of this season’s Saturday Night Live‘s hosts? Melissa McCarthy remains the frontrunner in EW’s season-long contest, with 40.3 percent in the most recent poll. Her steady support seems solid. Last week’s host Steve Buscemi jumped into second place with 27.0 percent. Jason Segel (and the Muppets) bled more than half his support but still finished third with 16.9 percent, and Emma Stone held tough with 10.7 percent of voters. Baldwin’s cameo on last night’s “Weekend Update” proved too little too late, and the all-timer was eliminated (5.0 percent) after hanging around since the season premiere.

Will Perry have staying-power? Below, I’ve embedded one clip for each of the five surviving hosts, as reminders of their recent performances. Vote below, and the host with the least popular support will be sent packing, and the other four will advance to compete next Saturday against… Jimmy Fallon! Ultimately, we’ll crown the Saturday Night Liveliest host at the end of the season. Watch and vote below. READ FULL STORY »

Katy Perry hosts tonight's 'Saturday Night Live': Talk about it here!

Don’t worry Stefon, we’ll tell her. (Psssst Katy, he’s definitely not the one that got away.)

While Katy Perry has appeared on Saturday Night Live before (she was the musical guest during an episode last September, in which she also appeared in a sketch poking fun at herself and her Sesame Street controversy), this will mark the pop star’s first go as a host. Perry will also be accompanied by her touring buddy Robyn, who will be on hand as musical guest for tonight’s brand-new episode. Watch the latest promo featuring Perry, Robyn, and Bill Hader’s Stefon below. (I would have guessed they’d save Stefon for next week’s year-end episode when Jimmy Fallon returns to SNL as host, but an early Stefon arrival is just as good as any early Christmas present.) Katy Perry's 'Saturday Night Live' promo -- VIDEO

It’s not often Katy Perry finds herself competing with Steve Buscemi for bragging rights to something. (Sometimes, sure, but not often.) But the singer will be doing just that this weekend as she gets ready for her first Saturday Night Live-hosting gig, just one week after the Boardwalk Empire star turned out to be one of this season’s unsung heroes.

The promo clip for Perry’s episode of SNL (which she’ll host while her tour-mate Robyn serves as musical guest,) arrived and with it, in addition to wearing a shirt that even cats couldn’t get on board with (just ask this one…or this one,) the pop star shows off her comedic chops. While her imitation of her hubby Russell Brand is pretty great, she might might want to try her hand at drama another time. Or, for now, just leave that to Buscemi. Watch: READ FULL STORY »

Russell Brand shoots down break-up rumors, talks kids on 'Ellen'

Russell Brand dropped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show today. In his interview, the funnyman addressed rumors that he and wife Katy Perry are on the verge of divorce. “There are always rumors, aren’t there? In the end you have to just not engage with Internet technology,” he said, then joked, “which is difficult because a lot of the nude women websites I quite enjoy!”

Brand called the Internet “a wicked little liar” and added that “being famous is like a little bit of you is taken away, and goes off, and lives on its own and does what it wants.” Still, he insisted, “I’m married to Katy perpetually. ‘Until death do us part‘ was the pledge. I’m still alive!” Brand also talked about having kids in the interview. See his take on the possibility of little Brand-Perry babies after the jump.

Break out that cherry chapstick once again: 'Glee' covers Katy Perry's 'I Kissed A Girl' -- VIDEO

Who could have guessed that tonight’s brand new episode of Glee titled “I Kissed A Girl” would feature a cover of the Katy Perry earworm of the exact same name? Then again, at a high school where the median age of the student body hovers around 24 and the house band is always on the ready, anything is possible. And that includes a sultry performance by the gals of Glee, led by Naya Rivera and Lea Michele, complete with more cheerleading Katy Perry enthusiasts and uncomfortable reaction shots from Matthew Morrison’s Mr. Schuester. (Keep it together, man!) While the ladies’ cover of the ode to experimentation likely won’t garner the same reaction as Glee‘s other ventures into the Katy Perry catalog (namely Darren Criss’ swoon-worthy take on “Teenage Dream”) it will probably return the 2008 hit to its rightful place: On a relentlessly endless loop in your head. Check out the full clip below: READ FULL STORY »
