'Saturday Night Live' finale recap: Ben Affleck shines, but Stefon and Fred Armisen steal the show

Last year, Kristen Wiig’s emotional SNL sendoff set a high water mark for cast member farewells. (Compare it to, say, the way Chris Kattan said goodbye with a “terrible re-enactment” of his SNL career during his last show 10 years ago.)

I’d say that mark was met — and possibly exceeded — by the closing sketch of tonight’s show, in which Fred Armisen (as punk rocker Ian Rubbish, first introduced when Vince Vaughn hosted a few weeks ago) sang a sweet original tune filled with simple, evocative lyrics like, “It’s been all right, I’ve had a lovely night.” He was joined onstage by bandmates Derek Gash (Bill Hader, who’s also leaving the show) and Keith Grimshaw (Taran Killam, who’d better not be going anywhere).

While Wiig’s goodbye paid tribute to her as a singular, standout personality, Armisen and Hader’s was more understated. But because Armisen is a chameleon, it’s only fitting that he bid farewell in character — and it was equally fitting to see Hader, the show’s strongest supporting presence (when he’s not playing Stefon), say goodbye while backing up one of his castmates.

Ben Affleck hosts tonight's 'Saturday Night Live' finale: Talk about it here!

SNL-BEN-AFFLECK.jpg

There are so many talking points for SNL‘s 38th season finale that I hardly know where to begin! Maybe it’ll help to organize them as a list:

1. Tonight marks Ben Affleck’s fifth time hosting Saturday Night Live, which grants him membership to SNL‘s storied Five-Timers Club. Usually, a moment like this would occasion a big, cameo-stuffed sketch featuring veteran hosts like Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin. But SNL just gave us a cameo-stuffed Five Timer’s Club sketch when Justin Timberlake hosted in March — and it’s way too soon to repeat that same conceit. So how will the show acknowledge Affleck’s milestone? Maybe Timberlake will show up to induct him?

2. As you may already know, Stefon’s very first SNL appearance wasn’t a Weekend Update visit. It was this little-remembered sketch from the last time Affleck hosted the show in 2008, which casts Bill Hader and the host as brothers pitching a movie together. (According to the clip, Stefon’s last name is Zolesky — who knew?) This has to mean that Stefon and Affleck’s David are going to appear together again tonight, right?

Kanye West is super psyched to be on 'SNL' this week -- VIDEO

Kanye West, certified Good Sport, has a notoriously robust sense of humor — so it’s no surprise to see how giddily excited he is about his upcoming stint on Saturday Night Live. (He’s the season finale’s musical guest; Ben Affleck is its host.) Just look at the goofy grin on ‘Ye’s face, or his amiable, up-for-anything body language!

Kim and Kanye get hot and heavy for French fashion magazine cover

L-Officiel-Hommes-Kanye-West-Kim-Kardashian-Nick-Knight_510x510Kim Kardashian sees Demi Moore’s naked and pregnant Vanity Fair cover and raises her this (seemingly) naked, pregnant, faux-mid-coitus L’Officiel Hommes cover, co-starring Kanye West as “the guy simulating sex with Kim Kardashian.” Clearly, this couple is trying to make things as awkward as possible for their unborn kid. Little Konniption Kardashian-West must be protected from Google at all costs, once he or she learns how to type.

Think the cover is classy in a French fashion magazine sort of way, or trashy in a low rent French fashion magazine sort of way?

We are never ever getting back together: Kim Kardashian wants a divorce, like, right now

Kimye is so in, which means that Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries (who were never even cool enough to garner a relationship nickname) are so last year. And Kardashian is doing everything in her power to make that official.

People reports that Kim wants her marriage to Kris to officially be dunzo by the time her already-famous fetus (fathered by Kanye West) arrives. Considering that she is due in early July, it’s obvious why the reality star is in a hurry. And so, Kardashian is asking a judge to declare her marriage over. READ FULL STORY »

David Letterman grills Kim Kardashian about why she still isn't divorced -- VIDEO

David Lettermans: They’re just like us! The Late Show host knows that he shouldn’t care about Kim Kardashian’s love life — but even so, he couldn’t resist asking the pregnant reality star last night why she’s still technically married to 72-day-wonder Kris Humphries.

And even though Dave clearly knew better — “It’s none of my business,” he said before lobbing one question — he kept pressing Kim for details on her failed marriage even after she answered his first query. Kim, of course, didn’t seem to mind the attention; “I’ve been trying for almost two years now to wrap it up,” she said unashamedly, “but, you know, it’s hard.”

The real reason Kim and Kris haven’t yet gone their separate ways: “He is suing me for an annulment based on the fact that I frauded him into marrying [me] for publicity,” Kim explained, seamlessly verbing the word “fraud.” But her sister Kourtney, who also appeared on Letterman’s show last night, doesn’t accept this explanation — “I think if she was gonna do it for publicity, she’d pick someone that people knew,” she said, causing Kim to double over in laughter. Somewhere, Damon Thomas nodded in agreement.

Kanye West considers Beyonce and Jay-Z his 'FAM'

Mr. Kardashian has spoken!

Yesterday, the rapper posted a photo on Twitter of what he calls his “FAM”: him, Kim Kardashian, Jay-Z, and Beyoncé together in a cropped Getty Image, Gawker reports. Noticeably absent is Beyonce’s actual sister, Solange, who appeared in the original photo.

West currently has more than 9 million followers on Twitter, but the only person he follows is his baby-mama, Kim. This is the only visible post on his homepage.

Kanye West deletes his Twitter; a nation mourns

Maybe Kanye West is trying to create buzz for a new project, like that rumored Cruel Winter album. Maybe he wanted to cede the virtual spotlight to Kim Kardashian, who could really use more attention. Maybe he just realized he could never top “I specifically ordered persian rugs with cherub imagery!!! What do I have to do to get a simple persian rug with cherub imagery uuuuugh.”

Whatever the reason, West has officially deleted every single one of his brilliant, ridiculous tweets — minus an ominous message that simply reads “BE BACK SOON.”

It’s not right, but it’s okay. At least we’ll always have this video of Josh Groban singing Yeezy’s greatest Twitter hits:

'Today' skips 9/11 moment of silence to air interview with Kardashian mom

NBC’s Today show opted not to air live coverage of the 9/11 moment of silence in order to broadcast an interview with Kardashian matriarch Kris Jenner. As the only national broadcast network not to air the segment, NBC has come under fire — ABC’s Good Morning America, CBS This Morning, Fox & Friends, as well as several cable networks aired the special.

In New York, the local NBC affiliate WNBC aired the live coverage.

The moment of silence — held at Ground Zero in New York City and at the White House in Washington D.C. at 8:46 a.m. — marked the time of day the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center 11 years ago today.

Instead of the 9/11 coverage, Savannah Guthrie and Jenner discussed the finale of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Jenner’s breast implant replacement, and Kim Kardashian’s relationship with Kanye West. “They are well suited for each other, really, really happy,” Jenner told Guthrie about “Kimye”.

Dr. Dre earns more than Jay-Z and Kanye West combined

Image Credit: Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images

Wait.  What?

Yep, you read that correctly.  The aging hip-hop legend who hasn’t released an album in 13 years earned more this year than Yeezy and Hova combined, pulling in $110 million, according to Forbes. How? Beats by Dre is how. His ludicrously successful line of headphones saw annual sales of close to half a billion dollars.

Kanye and Jay-Z, on the other hand, made a paltry $35 and $38 million, respectively, on the heels of Watch the Throne. Just goes to show that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but you can teach it to develop and market consumer electronics and make piles of money.

Keep your other other Benz, Kanye; Dr. Dre’s busy polishing his other other other yacht.
