This new 'Nightcrawler' film gets the comics all wrong

It’s kind of fun to compare the X-Men film franchise to its original source material. Remarkably enough, in just 14 years, the movie universe has managed to become as convoluted and confusing as 50 years of comic books—even if the two are quite different, story-wise. The big, important stuff is in place—kind of like the way a stick figure looks like a person as long as you don’t forget where limbs are supposed to go. Everything else is played pretty fast and loose. And that’s fine! Adaptations shouldn’t be slavish recreations.

But boy, did they mess up this Nightcrawler movie. READ FULL STORY

Jake Gyllenhaal sets his sights on Broadway in 'Constellations'

Not one but two Gyllenhaals will tread the Broadway boards this season.

Jake Gyllenhaal will make his Broadway debut in the U.S. premiere of Nick Payne’s Olivier-nominated play Constellations. Payne also wrote If There Is I Haven’t Found it Yet, the play in which Gyllenhaal made his New York stage debut in 2012 at the Roundabout Theatre Company.

Directed by Michael Longhurst, Constellations tells the story of two strangers who continue to meet by chance under the parallel universe framework of string theory. Press notes describe the piece as “an explosive new play about the boundless potential of a first encounter, free will, and friendship.” READ FULL STORY

Lance Armstrong movie in the works. Who should play him?

Lance Armstrong may not ever be seen back at the Tour de France, but in movie theaters? That may be on the horizon.

Last week, Paramount Pictures and J.J. Abrams’ production company, Bad Robot, announced plans to adapt New York Times reporter Juliet Macur’s upcoming book Cycle of Lies: The Fall of Lance Armstrong, due out in June [EW’s request for comment from Paramount was not returned]. It’s no surprise Hollywood has made a move — the story is captivating, and full of the kind of highs and lows that filmgoers love. Which just leads to the inevitable question: Who will portray the disgraced cyclist?

Bradley Cooper told BBC News yesterday that he “would be interested in [playing Armstrong]. I think he’s fascinating. What a fascinating character.”  Cooper would be a great choice – post Silver Linings Playbook, it’s clear the professionally trained actor enjoys serious fare, and a prime part like Armstrong in a good adaptation could be great Oscar bait. Beyond Cooper, here are some other choices of men we’d love to see tackle the role. READ FULL STORY

Taylor Swift's latest breakup anthem is totally about Jake Gyllenhaal, maybe

Three weeks ago, amateur Swiftologist Darren Franich casually brushed off the idea that Taylor’s latest single, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” could possibly be aimed at Jake Gyllenhaal. “The song notably does not mention coffee,” wrote Franich, characteristically succinct . “No way it’s about Gyllenhaal.”

Not so fast, Darren! New evidence indicates that Swift’s single may target Donnie Darko after all — despite the tune’s lack of latte mentions. An unnamed and totally valid source tells US Weekly that the song is definitely about Jake: “It’s definitely about Jake,” he or she says. There you go: incontrovertible proof.

In retrospect, we should have seen this coming.  READ FULL STORY

Who is Taylor Swift 'Never Ever Getting Back Together' with? (THEORIES!)

As day turns into night, so Taylor Swift turns a broken relationship into a new hit pop song. Indeed, at this point, it could be argued that Taylor Swift specifically dates people just so she can seek inspiration from breaking up with them — or perhaps Swift’s romances occur in a quantum state, such that she is simultaneously in love with her paramour and already writing the first draft of their break-up song. In any case, this week Swift released the sternly-worded “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” a charming little ditty about an on-again/off-again relationship that is ultimately off-again-forever. The Internet is already buzzing with rumors about the identity of the subject of “Never Ever.” We analyzed the most likely candidates, and using science, we came up with the odds that the song was actually about them. Jake Gyllenhaal will make his American stage debut this summer

Jake Gyllenhaal has played a time-manipulating teen, a serial killer obsessive, and a lovelorn gay cowboy — but he’s never played a role on the American stage. That will change in August, when Gyllenhaal makes his Off Broadway debut in a new Roundabout Theatre Company production.

The play, Nick Payne’s If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet, stars Gyllenhaal as Terry, a foul-mouthed drifter who forms a close bond with his overweight niece, Anna. The production is set to begin previews on August 24 and open officially on September 20 at the Laura Pels Theatre. Gyllenhaal’s costars have not yet been announced. READ FULL STORY

Stars gather for Serious Fun at 'A Celebration of Paul Newman's Dream'

The invitation to “kick back and raise a little hell” echoed throughout the night at “A Celebration of Paul Newman’s Dream,” the fundraiser for Newman’s Serious Fun Children’s Network (formerly Hole in the Wall Gang Camps). Indeed, it was one of the Oscar winner’s favorite refrains. Though Newman passed in 2008, his wife, Joanne Woodward, and daughter Clea Newman Soderlund have carried on his philanthropic legacy, which started with Newman’s Own in 1982 and extended in 1988 to the network of summer camps for children with serious illnesses.

Last night’s benefit at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall was full of big names — including Jake Gyllenhaal, Tina Fey, Elvis Costello, Trisha Yearwood, Jimmy Fallon, Paul Simon, and Josh Groban — but the night was really about the kids, who came from all over the United States and as far away as Israel, Italy, and Ireland. (Serious Fun has 28 camps and programs in more than 50 countries around the world, helping more then 380,000 kids in the last two decades.)

Gyllenhaal had his own memories of King Cool: “What I remember about Paul Newman is that, I was a kid who grew up knowing him more than anything as being on the cover of a salad dressing bottle,” he laughed. READ FULL STORY
