This week in television breakups

Ouch. This past week certainly hasn’t been easy for those of us who are a little too unhealthily involved in the lives of television characters. Glee, How I Met Your Mother and Grey’s Anatomy all had major relationship shake-ups, just  a few weeks into the fall season. (SPOILER ALERT! for this past week’s episodes ahead). On Monday, after an episode-long tease over who exactly would break up, Barney and Quinn called it quits over on How I Met Your Mother. It was hard to feel too sad about that one, though, not with an ending that had Barney and Robin off on a “sometime in the future” lunch date. READ FULL STORY »

PopWatch poll: Who is TV's best crier?

Charlie-Hunnam.jpg

Last week, my colleague Mandi Bierly wrote a post about TV’s greatest tearjerkers that got me thinking about all my personal favorites, many of which came up in the comments. But as I constructed my list of favorite scenes, I realized that there are some actors who really know how to deliver the waterworks. There are some who, without fail, have the power to reduce me to a sobby mess.

Last night, for example, I was watching the latest Sons of Anarchy and realized that Charlie Hunnam is very much one of those actors. As gruff, strong Jax Teller, it isn’t often that we see Hunnam get to flex that particular emotional muscle. But when he does — man, it’s fantastic. [Sons spoiler ahead...] Two weeks ago, when Opie died in prison, the impact of the moment in itself made me tear up. But it was Jax’s reaction that really got me. And last night, at Opie’s wake, it happened again. I had to rehydrate after that.

So when I really got to thinking about it, I realized that there are only a few actors that have this power over me. My top 5 — in no particular order — are listed below. READ FULL STORY »

After more than seven seasons, I’m surprised that How I Met Your Mother can still pull a fast one on me.

Tonight’s episode was packed with the general silliness that has become the show’s hallmark. Barney constructed the most ridiculous prenup known to man, there was talk of “honka-honka” (you don’t want to know), and there was a naked German.

Then, in the last two minutes of the episode, the silliness was put in perspective, a point was made, my heart strings were tugged, and the world seemed just a little sweeter.

It’s September, which means it’s once again time for the EWwys, EW.com’s annual awards honoring the shows, actors, and actresses that should’ve been nominated for an Emmy but weren’t. Neil Patrick Harris returns to killer Broadway show for one night only

Neil Patrick Harris and the rest of the killer gang of presidential assassins will reunite for one night only to reprise their roles from the 2004 Tony Award-winning production of Assassins. The Dec. 3 performance will benefit Roundabout Theatre Company’s musical program.

Stephen Sondheim’s characteristically dark, witty musical — which first played Broadway from 1990-91 — explores the personal lives and motivations of the people who have attempted (both successfully and unsuccessfully) to kill American presidents. Harris plays Lee Harvey Oswald in the play, while Michael Cerveris will revive his role as John Wilkes Booth (for which he won a Tony for Best Featured Actor in a Musical), and Denis O’Hare will reprise his Tony-nominated role as Charles Guiteau, who murdered POTUS 20 James A. Garfield. READ FULL STORY »
