Who do those ankles belong to? How I Met Your Mother is heading into its season finale next week and a promo released Thursday hints at a possible big reveal. Even if the promo is just a big tease, we think it’s high time to get down to business and take some guesses about who will play the mother of Ted’s children. Everyone has their opinions about when and how she’ll show up, but we can all agree that since HIMYM has cast nearly every hot actress under 35 on the show at some point in its eight years, the pickings are getting slimmer. We can’t believe it’s taken us this long to get around to thinking about making some guesses.
But as we make our casting picks, we need to consider what we know so far: she’s got ankles!; she plays the bass at Barney and Robin’s wedding; she was Rachel Bilson’s roommate; she loves that yellow umbrella; and she was once Ted’s student at Columbia.

Tonight’s How I Met Your Mother reminded me of that scene in National Lampoon’s European Vacation where Chevy Chase and his family get stuck in London’s Lambeth Bridge Roundabout. Every time I find myself having even the slightest urge to root for Robin and Ted, a couple I know is not meant to be, I feel like yelling out, “Look, kids, Big Ben!”

If you’re among those still wondering if Robin is the perfect person for Barney (or vice-versa), I urge you to give it up, friend. Because Robin is probably the only girl on this planet who knows exactly how Barney works. Is there a major bro-storm brewing? Could be. That’s certainly what I was led to believe after tonight’s episode of How I Met Your Mother, which saw Barney and Ted clashing over Barney’s not-so conventional premarital behavior.
They didn’t start the episode on bad terms, though. In fact, their clash was more like a pre-clash — because I’m guessing we’re far from done seeing them disagree. But let me back up.
The episode started with Barney and Ted’s antics taking a backseat to a larger story about Lily, who in this episode got an amazing offer from The Captain: He wanted her to move to Rome with him!
Excited as she was by the prospect, Lily couldn’t even bring herself to mention the possibility to Marshall because she didn’t want to put pressure on him to leave his dream job. The problem? His job was anything but a dream. After Lily turned down the offer, she went to surprise her Marshmallow at work only to find that the company had been downsized and he was spending most of his time building houses out of cards and getting reamed. It was a stunner: Even President Obama likely had Ross and Rachel advancing to the Final Four in his Greatest TV Couple of All Time bracket. But that’s why they play the games… and the popularity contests that skew towards current favorites. Like Marshall and Lily of How I Met Your Mother, deserved darlings who upset the presumed No. 1 seed with a little help from their friends. The couple joins Kurt and Blaine from Glee, The Doctor and Rose from Doctor Who, and sentimental favorite Lucy and Ricky from I Love Lucy (who’ve made it this far without a grassroots social-media presence).
