This week's cover: Lena Dunham, the beautiful (and dirty) mind behind 'Girls'

Does anyone not have a very strong opinion about Lena Dunham? The Golden Globes adore her edgy HBO comedy Girls. So does Jon Hamm. And Jon Stewart. And broke twentysomethings everywhere. And probably their parents, too. But in this week’s cover story, Dunham acknowledges that her show has also earned some haters, and she’s ready to respond to everyone from James Franco (who famously called Dunham out for “creating another show about white people… [set] in one of the most culturally mixed cities in the world”) to Barbara Walters (who said she found the show’s depiction of sex “shocking” and “depressing”). Other things she’s ready to reveal to senior writer Melissa Maerz? The story of The Great High School Cheese Puff Fiasco that helped shape her taste in comedy. The inspiration behind that amazing conversation about race that she had with Donald Glover on Girls. Oh, and what happened with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and that “middle school” comment. Bachelor Sean Lowe takes the EW Pop Culture Personality Test -- VIDEO

Maybe it’s just because it’s how we decide who we’re compatible with, but we’ve always thought date conversation on The Bachelor should include important questions like, “What’s the movie you have to watch every time you spot it on cable?” and “Name a guilty pleasure song on your iPod.” You want to know if the answer is Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA,” which, in the case of Bachelor Sean Lowe, IT IS.

Watch his video EW Pop Culture Personality Test below. Bonus: We also found out what he does off-screen to prepare for rose ceremonies. READ FULL STORY »

Near-freezing temps were no match for Sunday night Globe winners such as Quentin Tarantino and celebrities like Selena Gomez, who were determined to keep the party going following the 70th annual Golden Globe Awards.

Full of booze and ravenous for food, stars flocked to several bashes at the Beverly Hilton Hotel just after the awards ceremony, from HBO’s soiree at the downstairs Circa 55 restaurant and The Weinstein Company’s party at the old Trader Vic’s, to the NBC-Focus Features-Universal’s rooftop shindig, Warner Bros. InStyle‘s huge party in the Oasis Courtyard, and Fox’s tented bash just outside the hotel.

Holla! The greatest Mandy Patinkin interview you will ever see -- VIDEO

If there is one takeaway here, it’s that Mandy Patinkin is not Saul Berenson.

The actor swung by Good Day NY on Wednesday to discuss the Homeland finale airing on Sunday, but then something even more exciting than terrorists working with the CIA happened: anchor Dave Price had to slip away mid-interview because his wife was having a baby…and that was simply the greatest, most overwhelming news Patinkin had ever heard.

Just a sampling of his exclamations:  “Oh my God, how thrilling!” “Oh my God, that’s the most exciting thing I’ve ever had happen!” “To hell with me, let’s cut away to the hospital!” “This is the most exciting show I’ve ever been on, a baby is being born!”

The co-anchor tried to turn the interview back to getting some Homeland intel, but Patinkin was not having it at all and just had more questions: Boy or girl? Was this his first child? He also seemed overwhelmed and concerned about how viewers would find out if the baby was OK. The whole thing was incredibly endearing and makes me more concerned than ever about Saul’s finale fate. I need Patinkin on my television.

Watch his escalating excitement below (whenever you think it’s over, a new wave of joy hits!): READ FULL STORY »

Best of 2012: The crying game

homeland-tears

We don’t really enjoy watching our favorite characters suffer – but great crying scenes are cathartic, moving, and totally captivating. They’re also rare; it’s easy enough to tug at heartstrings with manipulative music cues, but it takes real skill to make an audience empathize with someone whose job is to fake emotions. Get a hanky ready – here are our favorite crying scenes of 2012.

Carrie (Claire Danes), Homeland

It is a truth universally acknowledged that Claire Danes is Hollywood’s best crier. (Just ask the Internet.) Her tears as Carrie Mathison, Homeland’s unstable heroine, are unparalleled – and so ubiquitous that it’s impossible to single out just one crying scene from the Showtime drama’s second season. Trust us on this one; when Danes’s chin starts trembling and it looks like “her whole face is chewing gum,” you’ll want to pay attention.
