This Week's Cover: The Surprising Power of 'Pretty Little Liars'

Television isn’t just about ratings anymore. Now networks are fighting to earn the “most social” title for their hit shows, and one of the savviest series in the social media universe is the over-the-top teen mystery Pretty Little Liars. The ABC Family phenomenon and its digitally-inclined stars — Lucy Hale, 23; Ashley Benson, 23; Shay Mitchell, 25; and Troian Bellisario, 27 — are changing how networks measure success, one photobomb, tweet, status update, and Keek video at a time.

Some of the of their posts may be related to the ABC Family drama, where the girls play an atypically glamorous high school foursome tormented by anonymous and cunning cyberbullies out to punish the friends of a dead queen bee. But the cast’s real gift is for unleashing more personal-flavored details — a video of Benson slinking around to Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend” with person-of-interest James Franco; photos of Hale in the studio recording her country album — that serve as a dose of gossip-crack for viewers and fans, which keeps them clicking and tuning in. Pretty Little Liars draws 3.8 million viewers each week, while also maintaining a colossal digital footprint of more than 10 million likes on Facebook, a Twitter handle (@ABCFpll) with a million-plus followers, and four stars who collectively reach more than 5.5 million with a tweet or retweet. (Hale alone boasts 2.2 million Twitter followers.)

'RuPaul's Drag Race' react: Monica Beverly Hillz talks to EW about her shocking runway revelation

RUPAUL-DRAG-RACE

You never know what kind of craziness is going to go down on RuPaul’s Drag Race — especially once the show heads to its rather unpredictable runway. In the past we’ve seen queens be disqualified (Willam) and admit that they were HIV-positive (Ongina), and last night included another runway shocker, one that deserves a SPOILER ALERT in case you haven’t seen it: Contestant Monica Beverly Hillz admitted that she is a transgender woman.

“It’s true what you’re saying — there is a lot going through my head,” she said through tears to the judges, after they critiqued her rather harshly and said that she seemed “sad” and “disconnected” and not like herself. “I feel I’m not here. I’ve just been holding a secret in and trying so hard. I’m not just a drag queen — I’m a transgendered woman.”

'RuPaul's Drag Race' contestant Latrice Royale talks elimination, Sharon Needles, and what's next

LATRICE-ROYALE

Latrice Royale was shockingly eliminated from RuPaul’s Drag Race in last week’s new episode, which whittled the field down from four to three. (Sharon Needles, Phi Phi O’Hara, and Chad Michaels are still standing.) At the time of her departure, Ms. Royale was nowhere to be found for a patented EW exit interview, but we caught up with the beloved big queen for a few minutes today. Latrice is a pleasure: She gamely talked to EW about her elimination, that touching speech she made to RuPaul, the contestant she’s rooting for now (thankfully, it’s not Phi Phi!), whether a big girl will ever win the Race, and what her next move is. Read on for all the dish from Latrice Royale.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How did it feel when you were eliminated? Sad?
LATRICE ROYALE: I had such an amazing experience, and I had grown and gotten so much more out of the competition than I expected, so it was really a rush of emotions overtaking me. I had come to the realization that I had really, really made a mark and a difference on the show. It was so emotional for me. I didn’t want to leave the girls. RuPaul has really changed my life. I really feel that. I’ll never be the same.

How have you changed?
For me, personally, I had a lot of healing to do and I didn’t realize that coming on the show was going to give me the opportunity to do that, to close some chapters and open up some new ones, you know? It was just amazing. Of course I was with other contestants, but I was there by myself — no distractions — so you kind of have to face your dark days, you know?

With the challenge that eliminated you, did you think the judging was fair? Should someone else have gone home?
I mean, it coulda went either way. For me, we were all trying to create and make things fresh and new. And then some people just grabbed their dirty laundry out of their suitcase and walk it down the runway and win? I’m bitter! I still can’t swallow that pill.

'RuPaul's Drag Race' disqualified contestant speaks out: 'I wasn't caught doing anything'

Well, no one saw this one coming — except for maybe Willam herself.

“Will you please step forward?” RuPaul asked the controversial queen at the very end of last night’s new episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race, sending what should have been the routine elimination of Phi Phi O’Hara or Sharon Needles into a totally different — and weird — direction.

Nickelodeon to bring back '90s game show 'Figure It Out.' I'm freaking out here.

In a move that will no doubt evoke cries of sweet nostalgia from those crazy ’90s Nick kids (an occurrence I can confirm because I, in fact, celebrated as such), Nickelodeon is bringing back the hidden talent game show Figure It Out, almost 13 years after the show went off the air.

The network, which brought back other ’90s favorites to TeenNick last summer, has ordered 40 episodes of the show, which will begin production in Los Angeles in April, a rep for Nickelodeon confirmed to EW. READ FULL STORY »

'RuPaul's Drag Race' week 6 query: Was Milan's lip-synching awful -- or genius?

Milan-Rupaul

They say the third time’s a charm. But that certainly wasn’t the case for Milan on last night’s new episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race, which — SPOILER ALERT — saw the Broadway- and oddly dude-tinged queen from NYC get the ol’ “sashay away” after her third week of lip-synching for her life in a row. Not charming!

And it should just be put out there: Gurl is a bad, bad, bad lip-syncher, and last night’s performance to Lady Gaga’s pride anthem “Born This Way” showed exactly why. And that was mostly because she ripped off both her top, exposing a bare man’s chest, and her wig. (She sure can do the splits, though.) Stripping down is nothing new for the main stage’s lip-synching-for-your-life showdowns, but there is sort of a feel of “been there, done that” when the wig-throwing starts now. And with all the disparaging comments Milan got from the judges about her drag being too “mannish,” it didn’t help her cause at all.

Or am I just not understanding Milan’s style of performing? Was it actually genius in some secret way?

The hilarious thing about the lip-synching last night was that Milan’s competitor in the bottom, Jiggly Caliente, was also God awful, but clearly, not as bad as Milan. (And don’t even get me started on what Jiggly did on the runway — that cape, really?!?) Honestly, it was a toss-up about who should have been sent packing. No doubt that Jiggly’s time is nearly up, too.

'RuPaul's Drag Race' week 5 query: Which queen did the best celebrity impersonation on 'The Snatch Game'? POLL!

Rupaul-Drag-Race-Cher

The Snatch Game returns! Last night’s new episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race once again featured the fan-favorite challenge, which finds the competing queens dragging out their best celebrity impersonations for a rollicking riff on ’70s-80s game show staple The Match Game. As we’ve seen in the past, the challenge can be a star-making turn for the gals who get it right: Both Pandora Boxx and Stacey Layne Matthews cleaned up on the past two seasons by serving up delightfully fierce versions of Carol Channing and Precious, respectively.

The fact that Chad Michaels took home the crown for the evening was basically a foregone conclusion — girl has been shilling her Cher impersonation since she walked through the door in the season premiere. I don’t think any of the queens thought they had a chance at beating her. Despite that, though, I thought there were several other stellar celeb impersonations, namely from Sharon Needles as Michelle Visage; Willam as Jessica Simpson; and Dida Ritz as Wendy Williams. (And several bad. Notably, Beyoncé by Kenya Michaels, who was mercifully shown the door at the end of the episode.)

Sharon proved shrewd by doing Drag Race judge Michelle — but it was risky, too, since it could have easily blown up in her face. Willam committed to playing Simpson as super stupid and scored. And Dida showed smarts for choosing someone — talk show host Williams — with such an iconic speaking voice and catchphrase in, “How you doin’?”

So, I’m asking you to choose between Chad and those other three ladies — Sharon, Willam, and Dida. Whose impersonation was best? Vote in our poll below:

'RuPaul's Drag Race' week 4 query: How much are you loving Latrice Royale?

LATRICE-ROYALE

Sharon Needles has been dominating RuPaul’s Drag Race in its first three episodes this season, and of course, there are other strong contestants, like Willam and Phi Phi O’Hara and some of the other sundry queens. But last night on the show’s new episode, “Women Behind Bars,” saw a star who was burning somewhat quietly really brighten up: Latrice Royale.

I’ve loved the big gal since the show opened — and I’ve been rooting for her — but she really turned it on last night in the main challenge, which found the ladies acting out a scene from the fake sitcom Hot in Tuckahoe. As Ru described at the top of the challenge, Tuckahoe was about “four best squirrel friends who keep getting arrested and sent to jail.” (The show looked cray-cray, but also like something I would watch… and enjoy.) Considering her prison past, Latrice was sure she was a perfect fit for the sitcom. “As soon as I saw that there was a prison guard,” Latrice said, “I knew that was the role for me.” And Latrice delivered, giving the camera such a load of facial expressions that the editors cut various shots of her lip-pursing into her group’s comedy scene. “Honey, you could do that for half an hour,” Will & Grace creator Max Mutchnick told Latrice, of her perfect pursing, “and they would laugh.” She was successful largely because she just went for it and performed over the top, which is what works in television sitcoms. (To be fair, Dida, Willam, and Phi Phi did well, too — they all employed a similar balls-to-the-wall approach.)
