Tori Spelling's talk show gets a co-host with lots of experience 'Flipping Out'

Filed under: Television, TV and tagged: , ,

Jeff-Lewis-Tori-SpellingImage Credit: Chris Hatcher/PR Photos; Tommaso Boddi/PR PhotosTori Spelling’s male co-host-to-be-named-later may have a name now: Flipping Out star Jeff Lewis. Back in April, news broke that ABC was developing a daytime talk show for Spelling and a co-host that would give the enterprise a “Will & Grace vibe.” Well, it looks like Lewis will be providing the Will after what the L.A. Times reports as the pair’s good chemistry during a test pilot.

We here at EW love us some Lewis — the latest season of Flipping Out landed on the Must List in August. Still, anyone who’s seen his Bravo reality series would agree that he’s somewhat … intense? And since Spelling’s no shrinking violet, this could be an awful lot of energy for one daytime duo. What do you think? Inspired idea?

Um, Mr. Stark? About that rogue missile launch over California...

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , , ,

Funny, slightly disturbing, story: A helicopter cameraman for KCBS in Los Angeles shot footage of a mysterious “missile launch” near L.A. yesterday evening. All four branches of the military have denied they were involved, and the Pentagon continues to look into what it calls an “unexplained contrail.” Well, a Twitter user in Wales might have cracked the case while the Pentagon is still investigating: Iron Man director Jon Favreau just retweeted the user’s original tweet: “Unaccounted missile launch in California? Or billionaire industrialist testing newest armour?”

'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1': Behind-the-scenes video

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , ,

This might only be for rabid Harry Potter fans (so, most of us, I guess?), but some newly released behind-the-scenes footage offers a nice, offbeat glimpse at the filming of Deathly Hallows, Part 1. Among the choice scenes: Helena Bonham Carter cracking up in full Bellatrix regalia; Mark Williams and Julie Walters as the Weasleys, practicing their dancing for the wedding; and some fun shots of Robbie Coltrane and Daniel Radcliffe on the motorcycle. Also funny (to me, at least), Radcliffe and Rupert Grint manfully slinging their wands and shouting “Stupefy!” to a nearly silent room. See the videos embedded after the jump.

Oprah gathers some talk-show all-stars

Filed under: Television, TV and tagged: , ,

Oprah-Champagne-ToastImage Credit: George Burns/Harpo ProductionsTomorrow on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Oprah will talk shop with some of the biggest names from daytime’s past, including Ricki Lake, Phil Donahue, Geraldo Rivera, Montel Williams, and Sally Jessy Raphael. I have to admit, this excellent preview photo actually made me a little misty-eyed thinking of all those afternoons spent chewing over divisive, informative, or otherwise wacky topics with this particular crew of hosts. My first question though: Considering her one-time Oprah-esque mogul aspirations, how is Tyra Banks not in this picture? Here’s a poll for you this afternoon: Who’s the most glaring omission (of talk show past and present) from this collection of TV superstars?

The Mayan Prophecy of 2012: Maybe they just meant there'll be lots of movies?

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

Matt-Damon-Bourne-AbImage Credit: Jasin BolandNot that we need another reason to feel like time is passing way too fast, but Deadline’s got the news that the Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter adaptation will be aiming for a June 22, 2012 release date. That’s just the latest in a string of high-profile movies that are already on the schedule for 2012. Among the others so far: Ouija, a board-game inspired thriller, the Matt Damon-less sequel The Bourne Legacy, the Julia Roberts-Tom Hanks comedy Larry Crowne, The Dark Knight Rises, and the Superman reimagining. Exciting projects, all of them — except for the big caveat that we’ve got all of 2011 and then some ’til we see any of them. Is 2012 shaping up to be a banner year? Are you willing to call it now?

Kristin Davis may return to TV in 'The Happiness Project': Are you happy to see her again?

Filed under: Television, TV and tagged: , ,

Kristin-DavisImage Credit: Solarpix/PR PhotosIs Charlotte York Goldenblatt returning to TV? NBC has picked up the comedy The Happiness Project and Davis is attached to star in the pilot. (This news comes the same day that New Line announced Davis will also appear in Journey to the Center of the Earth 2.) Happiness is based on the best-selling memoir by Gretchen Rubin in which she spent a year trying to improve her outlook on life using scientific studies, philosophy, and pop-culture wisdom. It goes without saying that this seems exactly the kind of project Charlotte would gravitate towards. Are you excited to (maybe) see Davis on TV again? How will she fare without her three partners-in-crime?

140 characters of funny: CBS developing yet another Twitter comedy based on 'Dear Girls Above Me'

Filed under: News, Television, TV and tagged: , , ,

Deadline is reporting that CBS — home of the current sitcom $#*! My Dad Saysis turning to Twitter yet again for another potential comedy. This time, it’s the “Dear Girls Above Me” Twitter feed, about a fictional guy who writes missives to the two party girls who live upstairs. (Sample tweet: “Dear Girls Above Me, ‘He totally drunk friend requested me at 3 am! Should I reject it and sober add him tomorrow?’ Don’t, he’ll hangover ignore you.”) This appears to be a trend: In September, CBS greenlit another comedy based on the Twitter stream “Shh, Don’t Tell Steve”. I guess good sitcoms have been built on less. Are we excited about this? And what Twitter streams deserve the call next?

Peter Weir returns: Trailer for 'The Way Back'

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , ,

Peter Weir has always been a favorite of mine—the kind of director who works without a lot of fanfare, yet consistently turns out classics without anyone really noticing, it seems. His roster of movies is impressive: Gallipoli, The Year of Living Dangerously, Witness, Dead Poets Society, Fearless, The Truman Show. His last film was the underrated Russell Crowe sea-faring drama Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World all the way back in 2003, so I was eager to catch the trailer for his latest, The Way Back, a drama about prisoners—including Ed Harris, Colin Farrell, and Jim Sturgess—escaping from a 1940 Siberian gulag. It’s a rousing clip with the kind of elements I’ve come to love from Weir: throwback adventure, mixed with high emotional stakes. READ FULL STORY »

Eminem doesn't allow swearing at home? Holy $@#%!

Filed under: Music and tagged: ,

The venerable 60 Minutes will air Anderson Cooper’s interview with Eminem this Sunday, but they already teased what will surely be the most newsworthy clip: that the proudly potty-mouthed rapper does not allow profanity in his house around his daughters. At one point Eminem says, “I mean, how would I really sound, as a person…walking around my house [saying] ‘Bitch, pick this up…” At which point we all think: You’d sound like one of your videos! Interview clip after the jump:

CNN's Rick Sanchez calls Jon Stewart a 'bigot,' suddenly not employed at CNN anymore

Filed under: Television, TV and tagged: , ,

Rick-Sanchez-Jon-StewartImage Credit: CNN; Comedy CentralEarlier today, an audio clip of CNN’s Rick Sanchez landed online that may have just cost him his job. The clip was an interview with Sanchez on Pete Dominick’s Sirius radio show during which Sanchez — who’s been the frequent butt of Daily Show jokes — called host Jon Stewart a “bigot.” When Dominick pointed out that Stewart was Jewish and a minority himself, Sanchez dug in even deeper, saying, “I’m telling you that everybody who runs CNN is a lot like Stewart, and a lot of people who run all the other networks are a lot like Stewart, and to imply that somehow they, the people in this country who are Jewish, are an oppressed minority? Yeah.” (Listen to the audio embedded after the jump.)

Well, CNN has just responded, issuing a statement saying Sanchez “is no longer with the company. We thank Rick for his years of service and we wish him well.” What do you think — after Sanchez’s inflammatory comments, are you surprised it happened that fast? Or surprised that it took all day?
