'Halo 4' goes episodic with the in-game weekly series 'Spartan Ops' -- EXCLUSIVE TRAILER

With each new entry in the Halo franchise, fans of the sci-fi first-person shooter series expect two things: A cinematic solo experience to shame anything George Lucas has committed to celluloid (at least in the last three decades), and a robust suite of online multi-player modes that continue the fragging fun long after the campaign’s credits have rolled.

Halo 4 (which hits stores in the U.S. on Nov. 6) is the first game in five years to put players behind the gold visor of Covenant-crushing space marine Master Chief. But it’s also taking something of a risk with a brand new third option for prospective players: Spartan Ops, a play-extending experiment of sorts that mixes serialized storytelling with bite-sized playable missions. EW has the exclusive trailer of the experience, along with an interview with one of the creative minds behind the effort. Check them out below: READ FULL STORY »

Green Arrow shooting into superhero fighting game 'Injustice: Gods Among Us' -- EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK

It could scarcely be a better time to be Green Arrow. The not-quite-top-tier DC Comics hero is enjoying a major career resurgence thanks to the CW’s highly anticipated new series Arrow – featuring the crime-fighting abs of star Stephen Amell — not to mention the nation’s abiding obsession with all things archery.

And now EW can exclusively reveal that the man who by day is known as billionaire Oliver Queen has joined the ranks of warring superheroes in Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s upcoming fighting game Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Developed by the same team behind the seminal fighter Mortal KombatInjustice pits DC characters like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Catwoman, Nightwing, Harley Quinn, Cyborg, and Solomon Grundy against each other in a battle royale in vast battlefields that the characters can employ against their enemies. In this exclusive gameplay trailer, it’s clear that Green Arrow will use his arsenal of arrows and wisecracks to pummel the crap out of his comic book compatriots. It would appear Mr. Arrow especially has a bone to pick with the Flash.  READ FULL STORY »

Stephen King's all-author rock band plays swan song on 'The Late Late Show' -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

ROCK-BOTTOM-REMINDERS

Every so often since 1992, an all-star crew of writers — which has included Stephen King, Dave Barry, Amy Tan, Barbara Kingsolver, Scott Turow and Simpsons creator Matt Groening — have stepped away from their laptops and notepads to play in an all-author band called The Rock Bottom Remainders. By their own admission, the Remainders have never been what you’d call great. “We’re a novelty, like a dog that can dance,” Barry recently told EW. (Bruce Springsteen once put it to them this way: “Don’t get any better or you’ll just be another lousy garage band.”) But being great was never really the point — it was about momentarily indulging their fantasies of rock-star glory and raising money for various literary organizations.

In June, in the wake of the death of their founder, Kathi Kamen Goldmark, the Remainders decided to call it quits and gave their final concert (woohoo! rock and roll!) at a librarians’ convention. But EW has an exclusive clip from tonight’s The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, featuring the band’s last televised performance. Granted, this may not be a landmark piece of rock history up there with the Band’s Last Waltz or the Beatles’ rooftop concert. But how often do you get a chance to see Stephen King strumming a guitar and singing?  READ FULL STORY »

It’s been 10 years since Jekyll & Hyde has been seen on Broadway, but a new production of Frank Wildhorn’s rock opera — headlined by American Idol and Rock of Ages breakout Constantine Maroulis — promises to bring the thrills when it hits the Great White Way in 2013 after a national tour launching in San Diego this October.

Pulling double vocal duty as the genial Dr. Henry Jekyll and his murderous alter ego Edward Hyde, Maroulis will share the stage with R&B superstar Deborah Cox, who plays altruistic prostitute Lucy. ”It’s going to be sexy dangerous,” says director Jeff Calhoun (Newsies). “That’s what I’m going for.” EW is excited to bring you the first look at Maroulis as Hyde and Cox as Lucy in the new production: READ FULL STORY »

This Week's Cover: The cast, characters, and crazy new season of 'True Blood'

1211COVEREW-SKARSGARD

When penning the fifth season of True Blood, the frightening yet disarmingly funny vampire drama that returns to HBO this Sunday, creator Alan Ball found inspiration (in all places!) by watching the scary-in-their-own-right presidential primaries.

“My first instinct about going into religion and politics was from watching Michele Bachmann, who thinks she has a direct line to God.” Ball told EW. “What would happen if she became president? A lot of right-wingers would like to see a theocracy in America. From there we thought, ‘What would a vampire theocracy be and how would you justify it? What kind of impact would it have on humans?’”

The result is a battle between the Tru Blood-sipping Authority, headed by Roman Zimojic (Christopher Meloni), and religious extremists like the Sanguinistas, who believe humans were created by God for one purpose only: to serve as a hearty meal. “Sanguine is from the Latin word for blood, and I was trying to find a name that like a real movement,” explains Ball.

There’s going to be a whole lotta crazy and a whole lotta steam on Broadway this spring thanks to the upcoming revival of Tennessee Williams’ New Orleans-set A Streetcar Named Desire. Daphne Rubin-Vega (above, in the peach nighty) will be suffering like hell as former rich girl Stella. Nicole Ari Parker (in the red kimono) will be vamping it up as her faded Southern belle sister, Blanche. Wood Harris will be sexually frustrated as Blanche’s patient paramour, Mitch. The French Quarter, where they live, will be swinging to original music by jazz trumpeter Terence Blanchard. And, of course, Blair Underwood (below, eating oranges) will get soaking wet and scream “Hey, Stella!” in his Broadway debut as Stanley.

Nick Jonas begins his run tonight as window-washer-turned-business-sensation J. Pierrepont Finch in the Broadway revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, relieving Glee star Darren Criss (whose three-week stint ended on Sunday to very favorable financial results).

Jonas is the third to inherit the primo part, following Criss and original star Daniel Radcliffe (all three of whom performed the role at some point during the month of January). Also joining the cast tonight is Ugly Betty star Michael Urie as the lazy, nepotistic Bud Frump. READ FULL STORY »

Harry Connick Jr. in 'On a Clear Day You Can See Forever' -- EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK

“He told me once, ‘I don’t give advice,’” says Broadway newbie Jessie Mueller about her costar in Broadway’s upcoming revival of On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, Harry Connick, Jr. “But I’ve learned from the way he handles himself. He’s very funny. And as you can see in the photo, we’re having a really good time. Somebody cracked some joke and we just lost it.”

'Hunger Games': Check out my District 5 badge! -- FIRST LOOK

Yesterday, my colleague Kate Ward bemoaned the fact that she still had yet to receive her District 5 badge from the country of Panem, i.e. the totalitarian nation at the center of The Hunger Games, Lionsgate’s wildly anticipated adaptation of the first book in Suzanne Collins’ wildly popular trilogy. To promote the film the titular games, Lionsgate The Capitol of Panem has put up a website at which visitors can register for one of the country’s 12 districts; this month, the site has started doling out those badges one District at a time, as well as the District’s corresponding Facebook page featuring the District’s unique seal representing that District’s specialty trade. (How many times can one say District in one sentence… District?) So far we’ve had mining (District 12), grain (District 9), textiles (District 8), lumber (District 7), and masonry (District 2).

And now EW can reveal the seal — as well as my specialized badge — for, yup, District 5. (Suck it, Ward!) [Ed. note: Save the trash talk for the Cornucopia.] This particular District has remained mysterious to many Hunger Games fans, since the most we’ve known about it was the mysterious female tribute in the 74th Hunger Games was nicknamed Foxface by District 12 tribute Katniss Everdeen. So what is District 5′s industry? Check out the badge and the full seal below to find out! READ FULL STORY »

This Week's Cover: 'The Avengers' -- EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK!

The whole enterprise is falling apart. Egos, tempers, uneasy alliances and bad attitudes are threatening the group, and failure would be catastrophic. Luckily, we’re talking about the actual team of superheroes in the Marvel Studios movie The Avengers, not the cast and crew. In this week’s issue, EW takes a deep dive into the May 4, 2012 movie that will finally unite Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, and Chris Evans’ Captain America — along with Mark Ruffalo’s The Incredible Hulk, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow — on the big screen. We use the word “unite” loosely. “Just because they’re super heroes doesn’t mean they’re super friends,” says Renner. (For some exclusive, on-set pictures of The Avengers‘ superheroes, see our gallery here.)
