This Week's Cover: The New Art of Coming Out in Hollywood

EW1213-cover

In this week’s Entertainment Weekly special report cover story, writer Mark Harris examines the new, casual method gay celebrities are using to reveal their sexuality publicly for the first time. Fifteen years ago, when Ellen DeGeneres decided to come out of the closet, it was big news. Not just big: It was the cover of Time magazine, and a major story on OprahPrimetime Live, and CNN. Last month, another star of a popular TV comedy went public with his homosexuality. But the news that The Big Bang Theory’s Emmy-winner Jim Parsons is gay was reported with such matter-of-fact understatement that many people’s first reaction was a quick Google search to see if maybe he was out already and we’d all just failed to notice.

But sometimes big news arrives quietly. That new blink-and-you’ll-miss-it style is an important hallmark of changing times. READ FULL STORY

Russell Brand breaks silence; talks Katy Perry split on 'Ellen'

Russell Brand discusses the one that got away.

Since announcing they were divorcing in December, Russell Brand and Katy Perry have been mostly mum about their split. But with a new movie –Rock of Ages– to promote, Brand stopped by Ellen today to open up for the first time about the duo’s 14-month marriage.

It could have been a slightly awkward return engagement, as last time Brand appeared on Ellen, in early December, they were facing rumors that things had gone south and were divorcing. At the time, Brand insisted the rumors weren’t true. This time, obviously, things had changed.

Apparently they plan to have the most drama-free divorce in Hollywood, as Brand had only positive things to say about his time with Perry. “Sometimes when you’re in a relationship I suppose it doesn’t work out, does it? But that doesn’t mean I regret it or anything.” He called her a “beautiful human being” he only had “love and positivity” toward. Hats off to Brand for keeping the talk classy–at least until he pens Booky Wook 3.

Watch Brand discuss Perry, as well as get the comedian’s thoughts on that crazy Time magazine cover, below:

Ellen DeGeneres, Anderson Cooper, Ryan Murphy top 'Out' magazine's 'Power 50'

Out‘s list is out! The magazine just released its sixth annual power list of media mavens from entertainers to politicians that they deem the most powerful, and it is heavy with pop culture stars.

Making the list are talk-show titans Ellen Degeneres (#2) and Andy Cohen (#10), producing behemoth’s Ryan Murphy (#4), Scott Rudin (#13), and Alan Ball (#37), and clocking in at #40, Entertainment Weekly‘s own Managing Editor Jess Cagle. Sitting at the top of the list is Apple CEO Tim Cook, who memorably took over for the late Steve Jobs last year.

Ellen reads from 'Fifty Shades of Grey': 'Do not eat the pancakes!'

From dream-casting the movie to hearing Barbara Walters wax poetic on S&M, we thought we’d seen it all when it came to Fifty Shades of Grey. But Ellen DeGeneres stepped it up a notch on Thursday. The talk show host and comedienne did a dramatic reading of the popular E L James romance novel as a “taping” of the audiobook version. Check out the clip below and tell us what you think — does her interpretation make you laugh out loud (I did!), or is it an injustice to some of the best literature of our time? READ FULL STORY

Khloe Kardashian talks Kimye and Kris Humphries on 'Ellen' -- VIDEO

Khloe Kardashian takes a lot of krap. On SNL, she’s been lampooned as the K-sister who’s neither smart nor pretty. She’s also regularly ridiculed for being person-sized, unlike Kim and Kourtney, who wear lentils as hats and hang glide with a Dorito. But we at EW have always believed that Khloe is the most likeable member of her family — or the most tolerable.

Case in point: A relaxed, smiley Khloe stopped by Ellen today. She proceeded to charm us with an Ashley Judd-ian defense of her body, as well as quips about her sister’s brief marriage (“I feel like they’ve been getting divorced longer than they were married”). Khloe also weighed in on the unholy alliance of Kim and Kanye West. Though she “likes” Kimye as a couple name — oh, Khloe, just when we were starting to warm to you! — she was reluctant to say too much about the relationship: “I think they’re cute together,” Khloe told Ellen Degeneres. “But honey, I don’t know. You’ve got to get her on the show and ask.”

Watch Khloe talk Kimye — and get in a few bonus digs at Kris Humphries — below, then tell us: Are you prepared to like a Kardashian? READ FULL STORY

Megan Fox victim of banana split and run on 'Ellen'

While promoting her movie Friends With Kids on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, ubiquitous fembot Megan Fox encountered the greatest trauma of her adult life: a giant banana?

“My only real job that I ever had,” before becoming an actress, explained Fox, “was that I worked at a little smoothie shop in Florida. Once a week, usually on Fridays, someone had to dress up as a piece of fruit and go out and stand by the highway.” Fox recalled: “I was a banana, a giant banana.”

Cue an Ellen staff member dressed in a trauma-evoking banana suit (think Hagrid meets Bananas in Pajamas) creeping up, making a “banana noise” (apparently that’s what that was), and scaring a squeal out of Fox. See the inexplicably random clip below. READ FULL STORY

Justin Bieber turns 18, gives a shout-out to cougars and gets a new car. They grow up so fast!

Justin Bieber turns 18 Canadian years old today (I’m still not sure how we convert that here) but got to celebrate the good old American way: By getting a new car! Some guys have all the luck, eh?

During a visit to The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which airs today, the now-technically-an-adult pop star — who also tweeted, “dear cougars. i see the jokes. im legal. hahaha”  — was presented by his long-time manager Scooter Braun with a coveted, environmentally-friendly, albeit pricy (around $100k) Fisker Karma to call his own.

“This is amazing!” Bieber gushed over his new present, which was also from pal/mentor Usher. Watch the full clip below, in which DeGeneres gives the singer some additional toys for his new ride, including bobble head dolls for the dashboard and a window sun shade. And don’t give him a hard time for putting it on the outside of the windshield at first, that’s just how they do it in Canada.

Jennifer Aniston's 'Wanderlust' talk show tour continues

Jennifer Aniston was on Conan last night (again, talking prosthetic penises, though her chat with friend Chelsea Handler was more lively) and her appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show airs today. Watch a preview clip below. Aniston admits she feels guilty for helping to set up boyfriend-costar Justin Theroux so he’d have to breakdance on his first Ellen appearance. (Aniston sent over his special breakdancing shoes.) She also plays a prank on a bike salesman, which is worth watching if only for the moments line-feeding Ellen leaves her hanging and the guy says he wishes he could hit on her.  READ FULL STORY
