Taylor Lautner explains why fans faint to David Letterman

Taylor Lautner made his Late Show with David Letterman debut last night. Among the topics of conversation: Who would win in a one-on-one fight between a vampire and a werewolf (watch Letterman try to break it down in the clip below) and the different ways fans around the world show their undying devotion. “In Japan, they’re very sensitive. They cry a lot,” he began. He feels bad, so he’ll touch them with one hand and assure them they’ll be alright. “And then, they start crying more.” So he grabs their shoulders with two hands and says, seriously, it’s gonna be just fine. “And then they start bawling. And eventually…they just faint. And, problem solved.”

Subversive humor, Mr. Lautner. We like it! He also detailed the infamous hotel rush he and Kristen Stewart experienced in Brazil when fans found out what floor they were doing interviews on and tried to come up. Their security rushed in, locked the door, and said, “It’s okay, you know, remain calm. But we got 2,000 girls that just, you know, stormed the lobby. They got past hotel security, and right now, we’re calling the uh Brazilian National Guard.” When Letterman called it inexplicable, Lautner said, “It’s very special.” Again with the funny!

'Paranormal Activity 2' trailer: Scariest clip ever?

Yesterday, I wrote a blog item noting that the Paranormal Activity 2 trailer, which is being screened before The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, had been yanked from some theatres in Texas because of complaints that it was too scary. Naturally, this provoked some conversation in the EW bunker about how frightening the clip actually was, and what other commercials for films had freaked us out.

Personally, while I found the PA2 trailer to be nicely discombobulating, and certainly a hundred times more frightening than the Twi-farce that followed it, I can think of several more commercials that in their day unnerved me more, including the ads for Phantasm, the Dawn of the Dead remake, and most terrifying of all, The Shining (look for all on YouTube, as well as the Paranormal footage in question).

Okay, so the ad for Phantasm looks a bit cheesy these days. But for some crazy reason, the small boy inside me still finds the idea of of a silver ball gouging out my brains to be kind of scary. And, if you can think of an a clip more scary than the one featuring Stanley Kubrick’s blood-unleashing hotel elevators, please do let us know.

Meanwhile, those with a hankering to explore the world of film ads further should definitely check check out the Joe Dante-curated Trailers From Hell website, where film notables such as John Landis, Edgar Wright, Eli Roth, and Mr Dante himself celebrate the wonderful and weird world of vintage film clips. I promise you it is worth a visit.

Move over 'Twilight': The first trailer for kid-vampire movie 'Let Me In' debuts online

Let-Me-In-vampireWhen people say to me, “Clark, you really hate vampire movies, don’t you?” I reply, “Au contraire!” — at least on those days when I’m pretending to be French. The truth is that, while I do hate the Twilight movies, I’m generally a big fan of the genre.

One of my favorite films of the past few years was the brilliant, atmospheric, Swedish vampire film Let The Right One In. The movie has now been remade in English — and renamed Let Me In, by Cloverfield director Matt Reeves — and the first trailer just hit the Internet. I’m not entirely at home to Let The Right One In being remade at all, but the clip is actually somewhat encouraging. It also features more blood than all of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, which I’m going to go ahead and call, “a good thing.”

What do you think of the trailer, which you can see after the jump? And of the idea of them remaking Let The Right One In? READ FULL STORY

'Eclipse': Most Improved Vampire Actor -- Jackson Rathbone?

Jackson-RathboneImage Credit: Kimberley FrenchAfter noting in just about every Twilight Saga: Eclipse item I wrote leading up to film’s release that I was pleasantly surprised to not be laughing at Jasper Cullen, I feel the need to publicly crown actor Jackson Rathbone Most Improved Vampire Actor. To be fair to him, he didn’t have much to work with in the first two films, and, perhaps, we were even supposed to chuckle at the hungry look he gave Kristen Stewart in the first movie. (Did we ever decide?) Regardless, he’s great in Eclipse, particularly in the flashback sequence, when we get to enjoy the Southern drawl in his voiceover and watch him make that decision to follow orders. (I kept it vague for spoiler-phobes, but you can talk freely in the comments section.)

Does he get your vote? (Nikki Reed could end up being the film’s scene-stealer with Rosalie’s beautifully-acted heart-to-heart with Bella, but we’ve known what she’s been capable of since Thirteen. And Hollywood is remembering: She’s just been cast as an assassin alongside True Blood‘s Deborah Ann Woll and Watchmen‘s Malin Akerman in the film Catch .44, Deadline reports.)

‘Eclipse’ audience reaction: Team Jacob seems to have gained momentum

'Eclipse' audience reaction: Team Jacob seems to have gained momentum

jacob-black-eclipseEven at a 9:30 a.m. showing of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, there will be screaming. That, I can confirm. If my Manhattan theater, which was two-thirds full at that hour, is any indication, Team Jacob has definitely gained momentum. Here’s when the crowd got vocal. Let us know if you had a similar experience. SPOILER ALERT for those who haven’t seen the movie or read the books.

1. Jacob makes his entrance. Taylor Lautner, whom EW critic Owen Gleiberman described as “the young Matt Damon in the body of Marky Mark,” gets a classic turn-around shot. He’s wearing a shirt, and the ladies still went crazy. (To be fair, that T-shirt does fit him well.)

2. Jacob shows up shirtless at the Bella swap. Our first view of flesh. I’d argue this bit is more successful than the New Moon T-shirt removal after Bella’s motorcycle accident simply because this time, they did a better job of masking the fact that this Taylor Lautner Bicep Watch moment was presented solely for our benefit. Jacob wanted to annoy Edward with his hotness. I bought it. READ FULL STORY

Kristen Stewart debuts new hair, old awkwardness on 'Letterman'

Kristen Stewart braved a return to the Late Show last night on her Eclipse promotional rounds. (For anyone who doesn’t remember her last miserably uncomfortable visit, the clip is after the jump.) There was an accidental allusion to funny business with co-stars. “That’s so not what I mean!” she groaned. And then another one. “Anyways, uh, he’s a really active guy,” she said. The audience tittered. Stewart grimaced. Her anecdotes pained her, stories trailed off in angry sighs. “You’re fine, it’s fine,” Letterman said, trying to let her off the hook. “I should never take weekends off.” READ FULL STORY

'Eclipse' L.A. premiere: Rob, Kristen and Taylor hit the red carpet

pattinson-stewart-lautnerFans were waiting with bated breath — some since Monday at 6 a.m. — for the big L.A. premiere of Eclipse, the third installment of the Twilight series, for those of you living under rocks. The franchise’s trio, Rob Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner walked the red carpet, and, I must say, their fashion choices have me feeling mixed.

On the one hand, Pattinson dared to be different in a maroon (!) Gucci suit. The risk had a huge payoff though, since the actor looked dashingly dapper, which was thanks, in part, to his new ‘do. (Though you could tell he, or someone from his team, made sure to get maximum height out of his new cropped look for the sake of all the Twi-Hards.)

Stewart’s asymmetrical Elie Saab mini was nice in theory — its cut was edgy and, more importantly, it wasn’t black — but overall, it looked more like she was missing a sleeve than making a statement, not to mention the fact that, for someone with porcelain skin like that, ivory isn’t really the go-to color. I wish she would’ve worked a brighter hue, which we know she can most certainly do.

Meanwhile, Lautner was clearly on his way to a meeting with J.P. Morgan, judging by his business-style suit suit. Isn’t he the one with the most red carpet charisma?

Elsewhere on the red carpet, Dakota Fanning looked, once again, lovely, but, once again, the same.

What do you guys think of the Eclipse fashion? Who has the best look?
